CTV News26-05-2025

Hundreds of e-scooters are hitting Edmonton's streets this week with launches from companies Lime and Bird Canada
The City of Edmonton is holding a series of events to teach Edmontonians all about e-rides and active transportation.
Street Sparks will encourage Edmontonians to embrace the future of micromobility, a range of small and lightweight vehicles, like e-scooters and e-bikes, designed to transport drivers short and medium distances to promote cleaner air, the City of Edmonton said on Monday.
'This is a fantastic opportunity for Edmontonians to experience the benefits of micromobility in an inclusive and safe environment,' said papastew Coun. Michael Janz. 'The Street Sparks events will provide valuable experience and education to help residents feel confident and make informed choices about sustainable transportation options.'
At the event, people will get a free, hands-on experience with e-rides and learn from Edmonton's micromobility vendors Bird, Lime and Neuron.
Street Sparks will include test rides, safety workshops and entertainment like games and food trucks.
The events will take place on Saturday, July 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Booster Juice Recreation Centre and Saturday, July 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mayfield Park.

Fires break out at southeast Calgary business and aboard tanker truck on city's west side

Firefighters were on the scene of a blaze in an industrial area in Calgary's southeast on Thursday. It was one of two fires that kept crews busy during the evening rush hour. Calgary fire crews were kept busy during Thursday's evening rush hour. Firefighters were on the scene of a blaze in an industrial area in the city's southeast. They were called to a business on 17A Street S.E. around 5:20 p.m. Emergency officials said they called in a second alarm shortly after firefighters arrived to get more crews to the scene. '(The fire appeared to have started) in what appeared to be an automotive repair bay,' Battalion Chief Keith Stahl said. 'It looked like we had the beginnings of a vehicle fire inside the building.' Stahl said the vehicle was dealt with relatively quickly, but by that point, 'the fire had already spread.' Stahl said the second alarm was called due to the size of the fire and the complexity of the structure, with 'multiple businesses and multiple buildings attached to one another.' Police were on scene to assist with some road closures in the area: 42nd Avenue between 16A Street and Ogden Road was closed; and Southbound 17th Street from Ogden Road was also shuttered to allow fire crews to work. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) said they hadn't dealt with any injuries from the fire at that point. The shop is located in an area of several industrial businesses not far from Ogden Road. Meanwhile, emergency crews were also on the scene of a tanker truck fire on the west side of the city. That fire was called in around 5:50 p.m. Police said the blaze broke out on the Trans-Canada Highway between Old Banff Coach Road and Stoney Trail. 'We did have full involvement of a commercial vehicle,' Stahl said. Firefighters had that fire under control shortly after and were checking for hot spots on the truck. No injuries were reported. Police said the flow of traffic was disrupted in multiple directions, including: All westbound lanes of Highway 1 from Stoney Trail were closed and being diverted to north or south Stoney Trail; and Traffic from both north and south Stoney Trail was being diverted from going to west Highway 1 as well. Eastbound lanes of Highway 1 remained open, police said.

Why Viasat Stock Floated Higher Today

Satellite stocks were in vogue in late trading on Thursday, thanks to a rapidly escalating spat between two of the most high-profile individuals in the world. A beneficiary of this was Viasat (NASDAQ: VSAT), which ended up booking a 2.6% gain in its share price on the day. That made it an outperformer in light of the S&P 500 index's 0.5% decline. Funding threat Earlier in the day, a social media war of words erupted between President Trump and former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head Elon Musk. That occurred just after Musk, on his X (formerly Twitter) platform, leveled criticisms against Trump's One Big, Beautiful Bill currently making rather jagged progress through the Senate. In one of several responses on Trump's favored social media platform, Truth Social, the president made what can easily be taken as a direct and unambiguous threat to Musk's various businesses. He wrote that "The easiest way to save money in our budget, billions and billions of dollars, is to terminate Elon's governmental subsidies and contracts." Among Musk's businesses, which of course include Tesla, are SpaceX and Starlink. The latter company counts federal government agencies such as the Departments of Defense and Commerce as its clients. If such revenue sources were indeed to be cut off suddenly, the move would have quite a detrimental effect on Space X. Its loss would surely be rivals' gain; hence the interest in Viasat. The company provides satellite services that rival those of Starlink. A potentially high-stakes dispute Of course, so far there have been tough words but no action in regards to shutting off the federal taps that flow to Musk's business. Personally, I wouldn't trade Viasat or any potential beneficiary on rhetoric alone right now, but this is a rapidly developing story that's worth monitoring for anyone invested in satellite or space stocks presently. Should you invest $1,000 in Viasat right now?
