Friday's weather: Snow, cold, wet and windy conditions hit parts of the country
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of damaging winds, cold, light rain and snow in parts of the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.
Impact-based warnings
Yellow Level 1 warning: Damaging winds expected between Saldanha Bay and Cape Agulhas from Friday evening into Saturday evening, potentially causing localised disruptions to small harbours and ports.
In the SAWS colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.
SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.

Advisories
Very cold, wet and windy conditions are expected over the interior of the Western Cape and Namakwa district of the Northern Cape from Saturday into Monday, and over the Eastern Cape into Wednesday.
Snowfall may occur over high-lying areas and mountain peaks in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape. This could lead to icy road conditions, particularly around Beaufort West Municipality in the Western Cape.

South African Weather Services issues warning on cold front this weekend
It's been only just a few days since the official start of Winter and yet the South African Weather Services (SAWS) has released a weather warning ahead of the weekend of June 7, 2025. South Africans have been cautioned to prepare for a severe weather spell, with snowfall and strong storms predicted, as a strong Cut-Off-Low (COL) system is expected to bring extreme weather for almost the whole country except Limpopo this weekend. SAWS anticipates that the system would first affect the Western and Northern Cape before moving towards the eastward throughout the entire country in the beginning of next week. Furthermore, major routes, including the N3 highway at Van Reenen's Pass, are said to be impacted by these snowy conditions, which could result in road closures or dangerous driving conditions from Monday and Tuesday. The cold and wind pose a major threat to animal welfare and farmers with small livestock are also encouraged to take precautions.
