Bristol sketch artist pays homage to British pub culture
A sketch artist has immortalised more than 50 pubs on paper to highlight 'how important drinking establishments are to local communities". Frank Morris, 30, has lived in Bristol for the past two years and aspires to one day publish a book on the city's pubs, featuring his art alongside local history. His sketches can take anywhere between five and 10 hours to complete, so he will set up a fisherman's stool on the pavement opposite and freehand the proportions."Like a lot of people, I love pubs," he said. "I think they're probably one of the best things about this country.'
At a time when the pub industry is facing a lot of challenges and upheaval, Mr Morris said he feels his project is paramount as a means of championing the significant impact pubs have on British society."When you're drawing the pubs and speaking with passers-by and bar staff, it really highlights how important pubs are to local communities,' he said.
'Celebrating pubs'
"[Pubs] are like small microcosms with their own little quirks and there's so much history in each pub you go to. "Around 400 pubs in England and Wales closed in 2024 due to things like the cost-of-living crisis and Covid-19."My project is all about celebrating pubs and how we should cherish them while they're here, as I've drawn a few pubs which have now sadly closed."
Mr Morris has illustrated more than 30 Bristol pubs including The Golden Guinea, The Old Bookshop, The Cornubia and The Old Duke. He said: "You think you've found all your favourite pubs and then you realise around the corner, tucked away, there's another amazing pub you haven't discovered yet."Bristol has a really big graffiti culture so it's not uncommon for pubs to be covered in amazing murals, which I think is really special and adds to the character of this city."
Mr Morris also tries to add personal touches to his art wherever possible, and has worked on several commissions over the past few years. "Quite a common one is first date spots," he said. "I offer to, if they want, add them in the drawing in a subtle way."They'll send me photos of them and then maybe hidden through a window I'll add their silhouette, which has been really sweet."Recently, I also drew The Cornubia and I met the landlord Jackie as she was leaving and she loved the drawing as I got her dog in it."

EXCLUSIVE Revealed: The ad to rope in children for British paedophile's 'fake Disneyland wedding' - where kids as young as five were offered 200 euros to take part
The disturbing advert used to rope in children for a convicted British paedophile's fake wedding to a nine-year-old girl at Disneyland Paris has been revealed. Londoner Jaskarn or 'Jacky' Jhaj, 39, was arrested after paying £111,000 to stage the vile fake event at the fairlytale Sleeping Beauty castle, featuring musicians, a cake and chairs for hundreds of 'guests'. Fantasist Jhaj, who has a track record of elaborate, bad taste hoaxes, was jailed for four years in 2016 for grooming and sexually assaulting two 15-year-old schoolgirls, MailOnline previously revealed. Now, a bizarre Facebook advert offering children as young as five 200 euros to take part in the Disneyland stunt has come to light, calling for 100 kids to attend the 'high-end wedding rehearsal'. The ad explicitly states that guests must maintain 'absolute confidentiality', and would have to 'stand up, sit, applaud and play their part in this prestigious gathering'. It was posted by a woman named Christelle Ka, who bills herself as 'actor and TV host' and runs firm Cristal Communications. Her link to Jhaj remains unclear. The offer included a private bus service to take 'guests' from the centre of Paris to the event. Those who attended were required to wear a 'very elegant evening outfit', such as a 'suit, evening dress or tuxedo', according to the ad. The disturbing advert used to rope in children for a convicted British paedophile's fake wedding to a nine-year-old girl at Disneyland Paris has been revealed Disneyland management allowed the 'wedding' bookers to privatise part of the site at Marne-la-Vallée at a cost of around £115,000. Pictured: A man stands beside flowers at the event Jhaj has been charged with fraud, breach of trust, money laundering and identity theft, French prosecutors said last night. Posing as the 22-year-old 'groom', Jhaj hired professional make-up artists to disguise his appearance, according to police sources in Paris. Jhaj was jailed for four years in 2016 for grooming and sexually assaulting two 15-year-old schoolgirls, MailOnline revealed last night. He lured them to parties by pretending to be a top Hollywood film producer and plying them with alcohol. Last year, he organised a mysterious fake funeral with an empty coffin, even hiring extras as mourners at the famous London Oratory in Brompton Road, Knightsbridge. The sex offender was also behind a similarly bizarre event in 2023 when a fake red carpet scene was shot in London's West End with 90 children and dozens more teenage extras hired to provide a crowd for the filming. Child actors as young as six were recruited as extras dressed in school uniforms and asked to pretend to faint as Jhaj paraded up and down wearing a red tuxedo as if he were a film star at a premier outside the Odeon Luxe cinema in Leicester Square. He was arrested following the phony movie premiere on suspicion of breaching a sexual harm prevention order and was released on bail. Jhaj, who poses as a film producer, was subsequently fined £1,500 at Isleworth Crown Court last July for breaching notification requirements and a sexual harm prevention order. The source of funding for his expensive set-ups is a mystery.

Briton accused of staging Disneyland mock wedding with child is charged with fraud offences in France
A British sex offender accused of staging a mock wedding with a child at Disneyland Paris has been charged with money-laundering and fraud offences in France. Jacky Jhaj, 39, who was found guilty of sexual activity with two 15-year-olds in 2016, was arrested this weekend at Disneyland Paris after the theme park was hired for a private wedding. Staff are said to have called police when they saw that the 'bride' dressed in a wedding dress was in fact a nine-year-old girl. Jhaj, who prosecutors said was playing the role of the groom in the mock wedding, has been charged by an investigative judge in Meaux with offences including money laundering and identity theft. The nine-year-old girl, who is Ukrainian, was not harmed, police said. Jhaj was identified as the arrested man by the BBC, which has previously published investigations into him. French police and prosecutors have not named him, though prosecutors said the charged man had a criminal record in the UK for sexual assault offences. Jhaj is accused of organising a bizarre mock marriage ceremony that included an orchestra, a giant cake and a backdrop of a Disney castle. He had organised for more than 100 paid extras to be bussed from Paris. They believed they were playing the role of guests in a real wedding scenario. The French court also opened an investigation into the suspected corruption of a minor, designating the man as an 'assisted witness' – a step before being indicted. Disneyland Paris is Europe's most-visited theme park and can be hired for weddings at a very high price outside opening hours, with its Sleeping Beauty castle as a backdrop. The event had been scheduled to take place between 5am and 7am on Saturday for a price of around €130,000 (£111,000). The French state prosecutor in Meaux, Jean-Baptiste Bladier, said the British man played 'the role of the groom after being professionally made up to display a face completely different from his own'. Bladier said French judicial authorities were informed by British police that the man 'has been convicted in the past, notably for sexual offences against minors'. The Metropolitan police in London said a 39-year-old man was currently wanted for breaching a sexual harm prevention order and a breach of a sex offender register notification requirement. In a statement, they said: 'We are aware the man has been arrested in France for other matters and officers are in contact with the French authorities.' PA Media reported that the man was placed under supervision after being convicted of sexual activity with two 15-year-old girls in 2016. The French prosecutor said investigations had showed that the Disneyland 'marriage' was in fact 'a fictitious ceremony intended to be filmed privately'. The prosecutor's office designated a 24-year-old Latvian, who played the role of the bride's sister at the event, as an assisted witness in the investigation. The British man is suspected of 'recruiting, with the help of a Latvian citizen, other Latvian nationals to ensure the smooth running of the event, as well as around 100 French extras, who were falsely presented to Disneyland Paris as wedding guests', the prosecutor said. The Ukrainian child, who arrived in France two days before the event, suffered 'no violence, either physical or sexual' and 'was not forced to play the role' of bride, the prosecutor said at the weekend. According to the prosecutor, Disneyland Paris was deceived, with 'the organiser impersonating a Latvian national and using false documents to secure the contract to hire the park'. Disneyland Paris has also filed a legal complaint.
