Australian defence minister Marles lays wreath at National War Memorial
NEW DELHI: Australian deputy prime minister and minister for defence, Richard Marles, laid a wreath at the National War Memorial in Delhi on Wednesday.
Marles' gesture underscored the tribute to India's fallen heroes.

In a post on X, the ministry of defence said, "Australian deputy prime minister & minister for defence Richard Marles visited the National War Memorial in New Delhi and laid a wreath in solemn tribute to India's fallen heroes. The gesture underscores the shared respect, sacrifice, and growing defence cooperation between India and Australia."
Marles arrived in Delhi late on Tuesday night.
Philip Green, Australia's High Commissioner to India, said in a post on X, "Welcome to India, deputy prime minister and defence minister Richard Marles.

Singh will meet Australian deputy prime minister and defence minister Richard Marles in New Delhi on Wednesday, an official statement said.
Both leaders will discuss regional and global security issues and the deepening of defence cooperation ties.

Marles is travelling to the Maldives, Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia from June 2-5 for high-level meetings, as per the Australian defence government release.
The deputy prime minister will meet leaders and counterparts in the South and Southeast Asia as part of the Government's commitment to deepening diplomatic and defence partnerships in the Indo-Pacific.
During his visit to Maldives and Sri Lanka, the deputy prime minister will discuss ongoing Australian support for both nations' sovereign capability development, the release added.

Cannot go against court orders to demolish slums, says Delhi CM
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Sunday (June 8, 2025) that the Government cannot go against court orders to demolish slums or remove encroachments. She promised the slum dwellers that there will be no unlawful demolitions. Responding to criticism from the Aam Aadmi Party over the demolition of Madrasi Camp on June 1, Ms. Gupta said the court had ordered its demolition as the Camp had encroached on the Barapullah drain causing waterlogging in the area, and hindering silt removal. Speaking at an event to launch the construction of a Jan Sewa camp at a slum cluster in Haiderpur, Ms. Gupta told the residents not to worry as they are lifeline of the city and the Delhi government would not demolish their homes. 'There were three recent demolitions. The first at Madrasi Camp was on the orders of the court. The second was at Wazirpur where a railway line was being encroached upon, and the third at Jailorwalabagh, where flats have been handed over to residents.' she said. 'If a railway line is being encroached, and there is an accident, then who will be responsible for it?' she asked. 'In Jailorwalabagh, if slum dwellers are rehabilitated and new people come and settle in the slum demanding compensation, the government will have to act.' Protest path AAP Delhi State president Saurabh Bharadwaj said the party held meetings with slum dwellers and had decided to launch a major movement against the demolitions on June 29. 'I appeal to all jhuggi residents — join this movement and raise your voice for your rights. We will gather at Jantar Mantar on June 29 and appeal to the Central government to take appropriate action on this issue,' said the AAP leader who visited the Madrasi Camp. The party criticised Mr. Gupta, saying the displaced residents of Madrasi Camp were provided homes in faraway Narela, and even those lack basic amenities. Leader of the Opposition Atishi questioned why the BJP was not staying true to its promise of 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahi Makaan' (in-situ rehabilitation). In a post in Hindi on X, Atishi said: 'Rekha ji, did the court also say that the BJP should not fulfil its promise of 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahi Makaan'? If the slums had to be demolished, then why weren't people given houses in nearby areas? 'Most people from the Madrasi Camp didn't get any housing. Those who did were given dilapidated houses 40 km away in Narela with no jobs, roads, schools or hospitals.' AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh who too visited the Madrasi Camp on Sunday, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to order an immediate halt to all demolitions in slum areas, and ensure rehabilitation to all those displaced.

NZ Govt announces 'Parent Boost' visa to bring families together, check eligibility criteria
The New Zealand government on Sunday, June 8 announced a programme for parents of its country's citizens and residents granting them access to a Parent Boost visa to bring families together. The new programme was announced by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Immigration Minister Erica Stanford stating that the Government was delivering on its commitment to support parents who live overseas to visit and stay with their families for longer. According to public broadcaster RNZ, the visa may be renewed once provided the holder spends at least three months outside New Zealand before obtaining the second visa. The visa allows a total stay of up to 10 years, PM Luxon stated that the skilled migrants needed to be incentivised to choose New Zealand to drive economic growth. "Ensuring we continue to attract the right people with the skills this country needs will deliver significant economic and social benefits for all New Zealanders," he said. Immigration Minister Stanford said that a longer-term visitor visa for parents was an "important consideration" for migrants when it comes to making a choice about where to build their lives. Live Events "Whether it be welcoming a new child, additional support during health challenges or providing childcare so parents can work, there is nothing quite like having family support close by,' she said. Parent Boost visa: Eligibility criteria The Parent Boost visa will be granted to an eligible sponsor who is a New Zealand citizen or resident. The applicant should meet Acceptable Standard of Health requirements According to RNZ, the applicant should demonstrate they have at least one year of health insurance coverage which provides emergency medical cover (of at least up to $250,000), repatriation, return of remains and cancer treatment (of at least $100,000) and maintain this insurance for the entire duration they are in New Zealand. Meet character requirements and be a bona fide / genuine visitor. While offshore during the 3rd year of the multiple entry visitor visa, complete a new medical assessment and demonstrate they have maintained their insurance. Income requirements for visa The person applying for the Parent Boost visa must fulfill one of the following income requirements The sponsor must earn the median wage to sponsor one parent, joint sponsors must earn 1.5x the median wage; or The parent/s have an ongoing income aligning with the single rate of New Zealand Superannuation for a single parent and the couple rate for a couple; or The parent/s have available funds of $160,000 for a single parent and $250,000 for a couple to support themselves for the duration of their visa. Stanford said the new visa struck the balance between making New Zealand attractive for migrants and not putting additional strain on public services. The applications for the Parent Boost visa will be available from September 29.

Internet suspended in Manipur, curfew imposed
Imphal, June 8 (UNI) Curfew has been imposed and internet service suspended in five districts of Manipur including the state capital for five says after violence erupted on Saturday night. As per a notification posted on Manipur Police website at 6 am on Sunday, N Ashok Kumar Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home). Government of Manipur announced the internet services were being suspended in view of the prevailing law and order situation in Imphal West. Imphal East, Thoubal. Kakching and Bishnupur districts, "..there is apprehension of some anti-social elements using the social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages, inciting the passions of the public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the State of Manipur," said the notification. "There is an imminent danger of loss of life and /or damage to public/private property, and widespread disturbances to public tranquillity and communal harmony, as a result of inflammatory material and false rumours," it said. According to the government, such inflammatory materials and false rumours "might be transmitted or circulated to the public through social media/ messaging services on mobile services, SMS services and dongle services." "To thwart the design and activities of anti-national and anti-social elements and to maintain peace and communal harmony and to prevent any loss of life or danger to public/private property, it has become necessary to take adequate measures to maintain law and order in public interest, by stopping the spread of disinformation and false rumours. through various social media platform," said Ashok. The government has ordered suspension/curbing of internet and mobile data services including VSAT and VPN services "in the territorial jurisdiction of Imphal West. Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching & Bishnupur districts of the State of Manipur for 5 days with effect from 11:45 P.M. of June 7 07-06-2025 except for those cases whereby State Government exempts and allows for whitelisting". Curfew was also imposed to control the situation. Crisis erupted after the arrest of a leader of Arambai Tengol and in the protest large numbers of people were injured as police and security personnel resorted to heavy firing. A journalist was among those injured. The situation is tense and security personnel are out in large numbers to control the situation. UNI NS SSP
