Iraqi News02-04-2025

The spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Sabah Al-Numan, confirmed today, Wednesday, that 18 Daesh leaders were killed in a single strike last year, pointing to the fortification of the border with Syria with advanced equipment.
Al-Numan told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "There is significant support and follow-up from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces for efforts to pursue the remaining terrorists of ISIS gangs."
He pointed out that "the terrorist gangs have suffered heavy losses over the past two years, as a large number of their leaders were killed, including 18 leaders in a single strike last year, followed by special operations that resulted in the deaths of many of their members, the most recent of whom was the so-called "Abu Khadija," who served as the governor of Iraq and Syria."
He added that "the Iraqi security forces have gained extensive experience, enabling them to effectively combat terrorism and organized crime," stressing that "all security operations over the past two years have achieved their objectives without any failures."
He praised "the role of the Joint Operations Command in developing precise plans, as well as the development of the security system's intelligence capabilities."
Regarding border security, Al-Numan emphasized that "the security forces, especially the Border Guard Forces, have strengthened their presence along the border strip, supported by the Iraqi Army and the Popular Mobilization Forces, in addition to the use of advanced equipment and systems that have contributed to border control, especially with Syria."
He noted that "the security forces today are radically different from previous years, thanks to their continued training and rehabilitation, which has contributed to building their capabilities and developing their potential."

Iraq joins UN Security Council meeting on Israeli strike in Iran

New York ( – The United Nations Security Council is meeting today in response to Israel's Thursday strike on Iran, which targeted nuclear facilities and heightened concerns over regional stability and global security. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi formally requested the emergency session, urging the international body to address what Tehran calls a grave violation of sovereignty and international law. The 15-member Council will hear briefings from Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs. Representatives from Iran, Israel, Iraq, and Kuwait are attending the session under Rule 37 of the Council's provisional rules of procedure. Iraq submitted a formal complaint to the UN earlier, condemning Israel's use of Iraqi airspace to carry out military operations in Iran, calling it a breach of sovereignty and a threat to regional peace.

Iraq-Iran borders swamped as citizens flee escalating conflict

Shafaq News/ On Friday, Iraqi border crossings with Iran experienced a sharp rise in returning citizens amid escalating security tensions and ongoing Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian cities and facilities since early morning. Eyewitnesses and travelers arriving from Iran reported heavy crowds at crossings, including Al-Munthiriya in Diyala Province and Bashmakh in al-Sulaymaniyah Province, where thousands streamed into Iraq. Most arrivals were students enrolled at Iranian universities, alongside patients and tourists. The overwhelming numbers caused long waits at the crossings, with many still awaiting permission to enter Iraqi territory. Among those returning, concerns grew that crossings could close or face new restrictions if hostilities intensify, leading to calls for Iraqi authorities to accelerate entry procedures. This surge followed unprecedented Israeli airstrikes targeting key sites in Tehran and other Iranian cities, which triggered a significant Iranian missile response on Tel Aviv.
