Kate Middleton ‘Recalibrating Her Entire Life' as Prince William Hides on His Birthday

Yahoo4 hours ago

Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton issued a new photo of William on Saturday, his 43rd birthday, but otherwise hid themselves away from public view as Kate 'recalibrat[es] her entire life' after a bruising week in which she cancelled a high-profile public appearance.
Kate's team cited her need to find 'balance' as she recovers from cancer when she failed to appear at the iconic carriage ride at Royal Ascot races on Wednesday alongside the king.
By pulling out of such a high-profile event just over an hour before she was due to appear, Kate sowed panic and confusion among royal staff, although press reports in the United Kingdom have largely played down the drama.
Multiple sources told The Daily Beast they expected Kate to dramatically scale back her public appearances for the rest of the year and instead increase her online and digital footprint, remotely supporting causes close to her heart.
The issuance of William's birthday photo, which showed him playing with the family's new puppies, while he was due to make no public appearance, seemed a textbook example of that.
One well-connected source, a former royal staffer, told The Daily Beast: 'Kate is recalibrating her entire life, her entire work-life balance. Wednesday was a wake-up call, not a one-off. She has never found the public appearances, and the forensic attention and criticism that goes with them, at all easy to deal with, and it was just too much this week.
'The last few years have been horrific; the disgusting things that Harry said about her and William and her family, the relentless speculation about her and William, the queen's death, the king's diagnosis which had them both thinking they were going to have to take over and then her own cancer diagnosis and treatment. It's all taken its toll, and if she needs more time to recover, William will fight tooth and nail to see she is given it.'
Another royal insider said, 'The important thing here is Kate's recovery. It was too much, unfortunately, for her to have three appearances in under a week, and the lesson has been learned. Kate will take it much easier for the rest of the year. I'd be surprised if you see her more than three times in the next three months.'
William and Kate have both spoken openly about the challenges of the past year. Kate has said she has 'good days and bad days,' and William said, 'It's been dreadful. It's probably been the hardest year in my life.'
Kate's March 2024 announcement that she had cancer came after the catastrophic failure to impose a news blackout on Kate's health. The information vacuum meant Kate's whereabouts became the subject of worldwide speculation.
William might have hoped that the couple would now be able to put Kate's brush with cancer behind them, but on Wednesday, the world received a dramatic reminder of just how hard recovery from the disease can be on a both a physical and emotional level after Kate pulled out of the famous carriage procession, which would have seen her seated alongside the king, at Ascot racecourse Wednesday, with less than two hours notice.
Her team later briefed the media that Kate was seeking to find the right 'balance' between a return to public life and recovering from cancer.
Kate's last-minute change of plans sowed panic behind palace walls, a source told the Daily Beast this week, with an insider saying, 'Everyone was wandering around going, 'What is going on?' One minute she was going, and the next she wasn't. This is one of the biggest days of the year in the royal calendar; you don't just miss Ascot on a whim, so there was a real sense of panic. The chaotic nature of the announcement was eerily reminiscent of the dark days of last year. People were bewildered and worried.'
Kate's office did not respond to The Daily Beast's requests for comment.

Danny Boyle Has This 1 Regret About Stepping Away From No Time To Die

Danny Boyle is reflecting on his decision to pull out of directing the most recent James Bond film three months after signing up for the project. The Oscar-winning filmmaker was originally supposed to helm Daniel Craig's last outing as 007, No Time To Die. However, just three months after he was announced as its director, Danny parted ways with the Bond franchise, due to what was described at the time as – of course! – 'creative differences'. During a new interview with Business Insider, the Trainspotting director admitted: 'The thing I regret about that is the script was really good. John Hodge is a wonderful writer.' He added: 'I don't think [the producers] appreciated how good that script was, and because they didn't, we moved on, and that's the way it should be.' Both Danny and John – who previously collaborated on Trainspotting and its sequel – left No Time To Die in August 2018, after which Cary Joji Fukunaga took over as director. Cary also worked with Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Phoebe Waller-Bridge on the No Time To Die screenplay. Back in 2019, Danny told Empire: 'What John Hodge and I were doing, I thought, was really good. It wasn't finished, but it could have been really good […] you have to believe in your process and part of that is the partnership I have with a writer.' The James Bond franchise has recently undergone yet more behind-the-scenes changes, with Amazon MGM Studios taking over creative control after long-time producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli stepped down from their roles after 30 years. Speculation is now rife about who will be taking over the role of James Bond, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson still the current frontrunner, though everyone from Tom Hardy, Sam Heughan and James Norton to Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page, Bafta winner George Mackay and even former Superman star Henry Cavill have also been rumoured. Heatwave alert! How to survive Glastonbury in the sun

It's the stuff of dreams: the weather forecast is good. Next week's weather shows a never-ending flow of sunny-skied days stretching ahead – good news for anybody, but especially good news for people looking to attend Glastonbury Festival next year. Or is it? As veteran festivalgoers will know, hot temperatures can be just as deadly for people wanting to have a good time as a thunderstorm. While rain turns festivals into swamps, sun turns them into a sweltering desert. With the mercury tipped to remain in the high twenties next week, here's what to know about surviving Glasto – and indeed any outdoor festival – in the full glare of the summer sun. It's top of the list for a reason: not enough people do it. Applying Factor 50 throughout the day is a must if you want to avoid getting extremely burned on day one. If you want something light and hydrating, a brand like Dussl is a good shout – their suncreams work both as protection and as a moisturiser. Otherwise, opt for the tried and tested Nivea. Battery powered fans – many sniff at them, but there's a lot to be said for having them on hand. Light, easy to pack and pretty much indestructible, they're an invaluable way of cooling down during a long, hot day in a field with much shade. Best of all, they're cheap to get – Amazon offer plenty for as little as a tenner. Sounds counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to protect yourself during the hotter hours is to layer up. That means lots of light, cool layers: linen, cotton and as few synthetic fabrics as possible. Shirts – which can be buttoned up or left loose – are a must, as are roomy skirts and shorts. Ideally, you'll be aiming to maximise airflow around your body while protecting your skin. Damson Madder is a good place to shop for loose, flowing items: their Chlo shirt is both patterned and comfy, as is their polka-dotted Layla skirt, which has the added bonus of coming down to knee length. And while you're at it, wear a hat! Sunhats are an essential way to protect oneself from sunstroke, and good news: they sure are having a moment. How about investing in one of Self Esteem's 6Music Dad caps? They were seen everywhere last year. There's nothing worse than waking up at 7.30am to a roasting hot tent – that goes doubly on hot summer days. But there are ways to mitigate this. While Glastonbury doesn't allow awnings, it's a good idea to shop for a tent that has side flaps or air vents that can be opened to allow better circulation and cooling. Good examples of this include the Sea to Summit Telos Freestanding tent (ultralight, while the outside of the tent can be converted into a sunshade) and the pop-up Gazelle T4, which includes six large windows for maximum ventilation. It sounds obvious, but again – it's easy to forget to drink water when you're six pints deep. Solve this issue by investing in a reusable water bottle: Chilly's is a classic, and comes in a range of fun designs. Glastonbury especially is good at having multiple hydration stations around the campsite, and they normally include reusable, lightweight aluminium water bottles in welcome packs for festivalgoers – so there's no reason not to use them. Nothing makes you feel worse than eating a heavy, greasy meal then trying to go for a dance in the sunshine. To that end – try and avoid them if possible. Glastonbury is bursting at the seams with great places to go eat, so try and aim for places that sell fruit (watermelon is great at keeping you hydrated) and eat smaller portions to give your body less work. Down with hiking boots! They'll make your feet feel sweaty, disgusting and be a nightmare to peel off in the evenings. Opt for lightweight options instead: ultra-comfortable sandals like Birkenstocks are always a good shout, for instance, especially as they let your feet breathe. So are hard-wearing, comfy trainers. For the fashionable, Puma are always a good bet: their Speedcats have Ortholite soles, while the Speedcat Ballets are a nice mix of fashionable and comfy.
