Arsenal confident of signing Norgaard as Man United close in on Mbeumo
Arsenal are optimistic that a deal can be agreed to sign the Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard after making an offer of £9.3million for the midfielder. Brentford want an increased bid from Arsenal to persuade them to sell their captain and the clubs are in talks over a package worth about £13million. Norgaard, who has two years left on his contract after he signed an extension in March, is keen to join Arsenal and play in the Champions League. Mikel Arteta wants to bolster his options in midfield after Jorginho's departure to Flamengo and with Thomas Partey also expected to leave as a free agent. Brentford were not looking to sell Norgaard, although he is 31 and Arsenal's interest gives the club a chance to collect a significant fee for the Dane. Brentford signed Norgaard for £2.8million from Fiorentina in 2019, when he was reunited with Thomas Frank, his former head coach at Brondby. Frank left Brentford this month to take charge at Tottenham Hotspur. Arsenal are looking for fresh options in central midfield, even with the club set to sign Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for £55million in a deal expected to be confirmed next week. The Spain player, 26, will strengthen Arsenal's starting line-up but Arteta wants more cover and experience in the squad. Partey is due to leave as a free agent when his contract expires on June 30. Arsenal have been in talks with Partey about extending his contract but no agreement has been reached with the 32-year-old. Norgaard would also help to fill the void left by Jorginho, who joined Flamengo on a free transfer. The 33-year-old was highly valued by Arteta for his leadership qualities and Arsenal see similar attributes in Norgaard. Among outfield players in the Premier League, he was the eighth-best for ball recoveries this season, according to Opta. He played 35 times for Brentford this season and scored six goals, despite playing as a holding midfielder. Arsenal are also closing in on a deal to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea after activating the goalkeeper's £5million release clause. The 30-year-old, who impressed on loan at Bournemouth last season, will join Arsenal as cover for his fellow Spaniard, David Raya. Kepa moved to Chelsea in 2018 for £72million from Athletic Bilbao, in what is still the most expensive transfer ever for a goalkeeper. Arsenal had Neto on loan from Bournemouth last season but decided against signing the 35-year-old goalkeeper permanently. Meanwhile, Manchester United are close to agreeing a deal with Brentford for the signing of Bryan Mbeumo, the Cameroon forward. United's latest bid, of £60million, is only £2.5million short of Brentford's asking price and there is confidence on all sides that a deal can be struck for the 25-year-old before Ruben Amorim's squad return for pre-season training on July 7. Mbeumo is waiting to be given permission to head up to the northwest to undertake a medical. United have targeted Mbeumo because he scored 20 Premier League goals this season, while Amorim's whole squad only managed 44 goals in 38 league matches. Amorim has vowed to revamp his squad this summer and the club have already signed Matheus Cunha, the Brazil forward, from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £62.5million. United are in the market for a striker, a wingback, a midfielder and a goalkeeper this summer but whether they can fill all gaps in their squad will depend to a certain extent on whether they can offload their unwanted players, such as Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho. Rashford wants to move to Barcelona while Sancho is the subject of interest from Fenerbahce and Juventus. Former Wales national team coach Rob Page is to return to the dugout as head coach of Liverpool Under-21 (writes Paul Joyce). Page, 50, has been out of work since his sacking by Wales 12 months ago, but will replace Barry Lewtas after he left to pursue other coaching opportunities. Liverpool believe the high-profile appointment of Page, who led Wales to their first World Cup appearance since 1958 when reaching the finals in Qatar in 2022, can further enhance the pathway for young players from their academy into top level domestic and international football. Present Liverpool players Lewis Koumas and Owen Beck were among those to progress from youth levels to the senior Wales squad under Page, while former academy graduates Harry Wilson and Neco Williams also worked under him.

Arsenal have swooped to strike a deal to sign Brentford captain Christian Norgaard after failing to agree a contract renewal for Thomas Partey. Norgaard is poised to move across London for £10million and up to £5m in add-ons pending a medical. Personal terms are yet to be agreed but are not expected to scupper what would be a dream move for the 31-year-old Denmark international who joined the Bees in 2019 and has been hugely influential in their rise to the Premier League. Partey's contract expires at the end of the month and while Arsenal refuse to rule out the idea of reaching a renewal agreement in the coming days this clinical move for Norgaard is a clear statement that they will not be held to ransom by excessive wage demands. Norgaard will strengthen Mikel Arteta 's midfield with proven Premier League experience and leadership qualities. He signed a new two-year deal at Brentford in March because he did not want to uproot his family amid serious interest from Benfica. But the idea of a move across the capital to the Emirates Stadium where he can challenge for titles and compete in the Champions League in the twilight of this career has proved too tempting. The Bees must feel as if they have been under attack since the end of another successful season punching above their weight in the Premier League. They have already lost head coach Thomas Frank and three of his backroom staff to Tottenham, and Manchester United are close to agreeing a £60m deal to sign Bryan Mbeumo. Frank was interested in taking Mbeumo to Spurs but the Cameroon forward appears to have already set his heart on a move to Old Trafford. The new Spurs boss was also keen on Norgaard, who played for him in the youth ranks of Denmark's national teams and at Brondby. Arsenal though have done their business at speed, offering Brentford what they consider to be good value for a mature so closely aligned to Frank and his style of play. Arteta and new sporting director Andrea Berta are limbering up for an ambitious summer of trading at the Emirates Stadium. They are expected to sign Spain international Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for £55million as a replacement for Jorginho, who moved at the end of his contract to Flamengo in Brazil.

Harvey Elliott brilliance clinches England Under-21s place in Euros final
Harvey Elliott spectacularly fired England Under-21s to the European Championship final as they moved one win away from becoming back-to-back champions. One year on from the men's senior team beating the Netherlands in the Euros semi-final, the Young Lions followed suit, with Elliott's second-half double earning a 2-1 win in Bratislava. The 22-year-old, a Premier League champion with Liverpool, scored both goals, first putting his side ahead just after the hour and then firing a superb 86th-minute winner after Noah Ohio had levelled for the Dutch with his first touch. Lee Carsley's side will meet Germany or France in Saturday's final when they will hope to retain the crown they won two years ago. Victory was fully deserved in searing heat in Slovakia as they were the better team throughout, with the Dutch goal coming out of nothing. Carsley's men almost took the lead in the fourth minute. Omari Hutchinson caused trouble down the left and sent in a low cross to Elliott at the far post, but the midfielder's low shot was brilliantly saved by the outstretched leg of Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs. Roefs denied Elliott again in the 12th minute as England piled the pressure on, again staying big to deny a low shot after Jay Stansfield's cutback. The Young Lions stayed on top but the chances dried up until a brilliant move just before the break, when James McAtee set Hutchinson free, he played in Elliott whose cutback was perfect for Alex Scott, but the Bournemouth midfielder's shot was deflected over. The Netherlands, who failed to have a shot in the first half, improved after the break and began asking questions. They tested James Beadle for the first time just before the hour when Aston Villa full-back Ian Maatsen drilled a 25-yard shot through a crowd of bodies, but the goalkeeper was equal to it. Just as England were being pushed back, they went ahead in the 62nd minute. Elliot Anderson set Elliott clear, he advanced into the box and fired a fine right-footed finish in at the near post. But the advantage was short-lived as Ohio made the perfect impact from the bench. Moments after coming on, the former Manchester United and Manchester City academy player scored with his first touch. He latched on to the ball after Charlie Cresswell miscontrolled, spotted Beadle out of position and shot first time from the left wing into the near post. But England were not going to be denied and some Elliott heroics sent them into the final for just the second time since 2009. He picked the ball up 30 yards out, turned his marker, beat another man and advanced into the penalty area before whipping a low shot into the bottom corner.
