
They're just giving up and calling it HBO Max again
Warner Bros. Discovery is changing the name of its streaming service back to HBO Max. During its Upfront event on Wednesday, the company announced that it will rebrand Max this summer, a change HBO head Casey Bloys said 'better represents' its offering.
HBO Max launched in 2020, but Warner Bros. Discovery relaunched the service three years later, filling it with content from its other properties, like Discovery, TLC, and HGTV. As part of the relaunch, it renamed the service to just 'Max' to signal that it's suitable for kids and families.
That strategy likely didn't pay off, as the service has become more and more HBO-like over the past year. It rebranded The Penguin and Dune: Prophecy as HBO Originals, instead of Max Originals, and tested a bunch of always-on HBO channels. In March, Warner Bros. Discovery debuted a new logo that closely aligns with HBO's branding.
The company said in a press release that 'returning the HBO brand into HBO Max will further drive the service forward and amplify the uniqueness that subscribers can expect' from the service.
'The powerful growth we have seen in our global streaming service is built around the quality of our programming,' Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said in a statement. 'Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead.'

‘The Studio' and ‘Hacks' Are Two of the Best Shows Ever About Hollywood — But Are They Too Inside or PTSD-Inducing?
Hollywood seems to always take that cliché 'write what you know' to heart when it comes to producing scripts about Hollywood. I enjoy those tales, of course, but that's because my chosen profession is to report on this fascinating business. There's clearly enough money, creativity, mystery, farce, scandal, glamour and spectacle for us to cover every single day at Variety. And all of the stuff that makes for good copy also makes for entertaining TV and film plot lines. So perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that three of this year's biggest Emmy comedy contenders play in that space: 'Hacks,' 'The Studio' and 'Only Murders in the Building.' All three have quite a bit of fun with industry tropes, and come a little too close for comfort with some of its satire. And they even crash into each other: 'Hacks' creators Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky and Paul W. Downs cameo as themselves on an episode of 'The Studio,' while Ron Howard is among this year's hot TV trends, playing himself on both 'The Studio' and 'Only Murders.' Sometimes, yes. The entertainment business as a series setting goes back to the early days of TV, as even 'I Love Lucy' had a bit of showbiz as its backdrop. Then came 'The Dick Van Dyke Show,' a TV show about the making of a TV show that won the outstanding comedy Emmy three times. HBO built an entire network partly on the premise of shows about show biz — 'The Larry Sanders Show,' 'Entourage,' 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' 'The Comeback.' (I'm not including 'The Idol' there, for obvious reasons.) One of Netflix's best early shows was the animated 'BoJack Horseman.' But just as often, it seems like shows about the biz nail it with critics and awards, but audiences are less interested. In TV circles, we still talk about Fox's groundbreaking 1999 comedy 'Action,' about a nasty Hollywood producer played by Jay Mohr, but it was canceled after eight episodes. They added a laugh track to ABC's 'Sports Night' in a desperate attempt to make it work. NBC's '30 Rock' won three consecutive comedy Emmys and is beloved by many — yet was never a megahit. Comedy Central and HBO Max gave us three fantastic seasons of 'The Other Two,' but I'm still angry at all of you who didn't watch. I think audiences are watching 'Hacks' (especially this season as Deborah Vance tackles talk), 'The Studio' (the best biz parody in years) and 'Only Murders' (which addressed Hollywood this season) because they're just damn good. But in the industry, they're elevated because we feel a special kinship with them — and that's OK. I'm hearing from a lot of execs in the business who bristle at 'The Studio' because some of its cringe is a little too close to home. I decided to do an experiment on LinkedIn and ask other industry folk whether these shows give them PTSD. I was delighted to learn that, for the most part, it's a no, that they enjoy seeing the satire. 'It's fun for this 10-year Warner Bros. vet to get more glimpses of that classic old lot,' one exec says of 'Hacks.' Former CBS research exec Eric Steinberg says he sees 'lots of relatable moments in 'Hacks' now that the main character has her own show. It will be no surprise to you that I found the audience research episode particularly fun. And, the exteriors at TV City bring back lots of memories. PTSD? Hardly!' Communications exec Stacey Luchs adds, 'There are moments that really hit home — the kind of thing people outside the entertainment world probably wouldn't believe. Sometimes it feels like I'm in on an inside joke, and it just makes me smile.' My former (and longtime) Variety colleague Steve Gaydos perhaps says it best: 'The writers of 'Hacks' and 'The Studio' have been reading our mail. But Billy Wilder turned it into art 75 years ago with 'Sunset Boulevard.' He didn't just shoot fish in a barrel. His fish had souls, and their fates mattered — then and just as much now, on stage with music and on screens of all sizes in black and white. That's the ultimate achievement and though these current TV shows contain moments of pathos, it will take time before we can measure their memorability.' Bridget Everett on How ‘Somebody Somewhere' Was the Best Experience of Her Life: ‘It's Like, Now What Am I Gonna Do?'
Bridget Everett isn't quite sure how she could ever top 'Somebody Somewhere.' The show ended its three-season run at the end of 2024 with a moving gathering of the show's characters and a strong musical number in which her character, Sam, finally feels ready to accept the love and friendship of the community she has created in her small hometown. 'I'm so grateful that I got to do it, and I miss doing it all the time,' Everett tells Variety's Awards Circuit Podcast of her HBO series. 'I still think about them. I think about the show and people come up to me a lot, so it lives on for me. I talk to people about it on the street all the time and as much as I am uncomfortable having conversations with strangers, I really enjoy it because it's personal to me. I love that people connect to it, and sometimes in a profound way, because they've dealt with a similar kind of grief.' Along the way, she builds new bonds with friends like Joel (Jeff Hiller), his eventual husband Brad (Tim Bagley) and Fred (Murray Hill). 'It's changed me and helped me be a lot more at peace with myself,' Everett says. 'You get the dream of making a show with people that you love and in a way that you want to tell a story, and then if it makes you feel better in the end, I mean, it's like, now what am I gonna do? Because I feel like I've had the best experience of my life.' On this bonus edition of the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, we tackle that question of what Everett might do next, how the folks in her hometown reacted to being put in the spotlight, and how 'Somebody Somewhere' really resonated with audiences as something truly special. Everett has an amazing voice, as fans of her cabaret shows, theater performances and other music gigs (including her band The Tender Moments) can attest. But 'Somebody Somewhere' viewers got a taste of that singing prowess too — particularly in the show's series finale. 'There's nothing that makes me happier than singing, and there's nothing that makes me sometimes sadder than singing,' she tells Variety's Awards Circuit Podcast. 'But it's really, putting the show together, to find a way to incorporate music that that felt organic. We never wanted to do a big 'Glee'-style number. We wanted to do something how music sort of is part of the fabric of my life or Sam's life.' In the finale, Everett's character Sam brings her friends and sister together to the bar where she works, and she sings 'The Climb,' by Miley Cyrus. 'I used to sing that song live in some of my road shows, and I've always loved it,' she says. 'It is kind of sentimental and on the nose, like the lyrics are very literal. But to me, I never get tired of singing it.' Besides tackling grief, friendship, love and relationships, 'Somebody Somewhere' shined a spotlight on the kind of town that is rarely seen on TV. 'My family, we're all from there — my brother still lives there, and my mom lived there at the time when she was still alive,' Everett says. 'I was like, I want them to be proud of this. I want Manhattan to be proud of this. 'We did a final watch party there, and the cast all came back with me,' she says. 'The feeling in the room was like a rock concert. It was so emotional. I was weeping, just being around all these people that the show connected with that were from there. Feeling like we got that right was so moving to me.' So what is next? 'We're trying to dream up something else,' Everett adds.' I want to do something that feels right, but I want to work. I want to do something. It's hard after you do something that's built for you. I had such a big part of the creative elements, the writing, the producing, all that business. I want to be able to do that again.' Aimee Lou Wood And Walton Goggins Address Their Rumored Feud: ‘We Care About Each Other Very Deeply'
'There is no feud,' Walton Goggins says of his relationship with Aimee Lou Wood, his co-star in The White Lotus season 3, courtesy of a new interview with Variety. FIND OUT MORE ON ELLE COLLECTIVE That revelation might come as a surprise to series fans, some of whom have questioned the status of Goggins and Wood's friendship in the wake of the third season's debut earlier this spring. Feud rumors first circulated on the heels of comments by co-star Jason Isaacs, who repeatedly referred to 'social tensions' on the HBO drama's Thailand set. Those rumors were further inflamed by Goggins's physical separation from the rest of the ensemble cast, including Wood, post-wrap. As he explained to Variety, that distance wasn't personal: He's been preoccupied with production on Prime Video's Fallout season 2, and on the evening of The White Lotus season 3's finale, he was in New York for an appearance on a late-night show, far from his fellow cast members. In the latest chapter of showrunner Mike White's hit drama, Goggins and Wood play Rick and Chelsea, an unlikely pair of star-crossed lovers who meet a heart-breaking fate in the finale episode. During the Variety interview, in which Wood and Goggins were interviewed jointly, Goggins turned to Wood to express his sorrow at having missed the cast's finale watch party. 'I wish I would have been able to watch this with you,' he shared. 'It was so cathartic and so painful, and I regret that. I really do.' But as the two explained in the cathartic tell-all, they have nothing but love to share with each other, and their rumored 'feud' largely amounts to public misconception. 'I adore, I love this woman madly, and she is so important to me,' Goggins said of Wood. 'This is Goldie Hawn. This is Meg Ryan. She can do anything, and she will. You watch what the next 20 years of her experience will be. I'll be on an island, I think Greece. But she's special. There is no feud. She is love and I know that I am that to her. We care about each other very deeply.' In the days leading up to Goggins's recent Saturday Night Live hosting gig, the comedy show revealed a skit in which Sarah Sherman played a parody version of Wood's White Lotus character, Chelsea, complete with a pair of prosthetic buck teeth. Wood later went on Instagram to describe the sketch as 'mean and unfunny,' while Goggins reposted the clip and complimented its humor. Many viewers interpreted this move as a not-so-subtle swipe at Wood. Goggins told Variety it was anything but, and that after he encountered Wood's hurt response, he 'felt awful and deleted his post.' 'I've been posting for 14 fucking years, and if I'm gonna say something, I'm gonna say it to your face,' Goggins said. 'I don't use social media in any way, and I'm not a mean guy.' Added Wood, 'I think it's such a comment on where we're at culturally. Why is everyone obsessing over Instagram? That is irrelevant. We don't give a shite about Instagram.' Goggins also addressed why he unfollowed Wood on Instagram after The White Lotus wrapped, as well as his recent interview with the U.K.'s Times, which was published with the title, 'Walton Goggins: Aimee Lou Wood? I'm not gonna have that conversation.' Regarding the Times story, Goggins said he simply did not feel as if a solo interview was the right time and space to address his relationship with Wood. 'What am I gonna do, speak for both of us? Never,' he said. Regarding Instagram, he explained that he unfollowed Wood as a way to distance himself not from Wood herself but from the experience of filming The White Lotus. 'My catharsis in this experience was different than other people's, because of my history in this place,' Goggins said of his time in Thailand, referencing his time spent traveling the country in the wake of his wife's suicide in 2004. 'I knew what [Aimee and I] had gone through, and I knew how close that we had gotten, and I needed to begin to process saying goodbye to Rick and Chelsea,' Goggins continued. 'And I knew that that was going to take a while for me, so I let her know, this is what I've gotta do. And she was extremely supportive about that.' He continued, 'I needed to just back away from everyone. I haven't spoken to anyone [from the cast]. I couldn't handle it. Judge me or don't. I don't give a fuck what you think. This is my process. Rick means everything to me, and Chelsea means everything to me. And so that's what I needed to do for me to process all of this.' At the end of their conversation, Variety reports that Goggins re-followed Wood on Instagram, and that they embraced. 'I completely understand,' Wood told him. His response: 'I love you.'
