LEGOLAND Florida plans to lay off over 200 employees, mostly performers

Yahoo28-01-2025

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WFLA) — Employees at LEGOLAND Florida received notification last week of mass layoffs set to take place in just a few months.
In a notice dated Friday, Jan. 24, Merlin Entertainment, which owns and operates the Winter Haven theme park and resort, said 234 positions will be eliminated beginning on March 25, 2025.

Over 150 of those positions include entertainment performers. Another 23 are entertainment technicians. At least five are team leaders, with other positions like 'Head of Resort Quality' also being let go.
The layoffs are expected to continue through April 7, 2025. According to the company, none of the employees are represented by a union, and the layoffs will be permanent.
It's unclear exactly what prompted the company to decide to let go of several of its performers.
In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for LEGOLAND said the resort plans to retain a core entertainment team and will be working with an unnamed 'global leader in world class experiences' during seasonal events.
LEGOLAND's full statement can be found below.
At LEGOLAND Florida Resort we are making operational changes to help us elevate the guest experience in 2025 and beyond.
The decision to reduce the size of our entertainment team was undoubtedly difficult, but these changes will allow the Resort to operate more flexibly and responsively in a competitive market.
We are supporting employees during this period of change, including sharing job opportunities elsewhere in the wider visitor attraction sector in Florida, such as those being created at our new SEA LIFE Florida at the Resort. We will do all we can to help them find alternative employment.

Dave Chapelle says SNL writers were in tears after Trump's 2016 win

Comedian Dave Chappelle said in a new interview posted Wednesday that President Donald Trump's election win in 2016 emotionally broke the writers for NBC's "Saturday Night Live." Chappelle sat down with fellow comedian Mo Amer as part of Variety's "Actors on Actors" program, where they discussed Chappelle hosting the long-running series the weekend after Trump's shocking first victory. "Man, when they called Donald Trump the winner, that s--- shut the writers' room down. You should have seen them in there," Chappelle said. "Boy, they was crying … They couldn't believe that this was happening." "I knew it the whole time," Amer remarked of Trump's win. "Yeah, because you live in Texas and I live in Ohio, but at 30 Rock, it looked like Hillary Clinton was going to win. I don't know what looks different from those windows," Chappelle said. "But yeah, man, it surprised me." During the interview, Amer asked Chappelle how he felt about his 2016 SNL monologue nearly nine years later. Chappelle revealed he hadn't watched it recently but remembered it "fondly." Amer pointed out that during the monologue, he spoke about giving Trump a chance. "Oh, I remember that part. But you know what? I look at it like a photograph. That's what it felt like in that moment. Now, if it ages well or not, I don't get mad if I look at a picture because it's not today. That's what it was at that time. You might look at an old set and cringe, but you could just cringe because of how you were at that time," Chappelle said. Chappelle's post-election SNL appearances have become a tradition of sorts; he hosted in 2020 only hours after the presidential race was called for former President Joe Biden. He most recently hosted the long-running show in January, the Saturday before Trump's second inauguration.

Elon Musk Calls on Congress to Kill Trump's Bill With Memes of Quentin Tarantino Classic

Elon Musk's crusade against Donald Trump's 'big beautiful bill' now includes references to a Quentin Tarantino classic. The former leader of President Trump's Department of Government Efficiency has spent the past few days barraging X with post after post targeting his former boss's 'big beautiful bill.' Said bill seeks to slice funding for Medicaid and the country's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), includes a number of tax cuts among other changes and tacks on an additional $2.3 trillion over the next 10 years. Musk's latest posts on Wednesday made reference to the Quentin Tarantino classic 'Kill Bill.' 'Call your Senator, Call your Congressman, Bankrupting America is NOT ok,' the Tesla CEO wrote. 'KILL the BILL.' Musk began calling out Trump and other Republicans at the top of the week, saying he could not hold his silence anymore. The mogul had been vocal about his dislike of the bill from the start, however got more aggressive about it after stepping down at DOGE earlier this week. 'I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,' Musk wrote on X Tuesday. 'Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.' Trump has been uncharacteristically silent on Musk's many shots at the spending bill. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell said that it's that specific silence that could point to how the president is feeling on the matter. 'Elon Musk declared today, on day 134 of the Trump presidency, 'I just can't stand it anymore.' And in response, the explosively rageful Donald Trump said nothing,' O'Donnell said on his MSNBC program 'The Last Word.' 'And that is how you know who Donald Trump fears in this world. If you attack Donald Trump and Donald Trump says nothing, Donald Trump's silence is the biggest expression of fear that he has.'
