9 Game-Changing Tips For A Wild Camping Trip In India
Sleeping under the stars, cooking by a campfire, waking up to the sounds of nature-camping in India can be incredible if you know what you're doing. From Himachal's pine forests to the backwaters of Kerala, the country offers loads of off-grid spots where you can unplug. But let's not pretend it's all Instagram-perfect moments. Without proper prep, you'll end up fighting off leeches, arguing with Google Maps, or worse, trying to explain your tent to the local police. Here's how to actually enjoy camping in India — with no filters needed.
Here Are 9 Smart Tips To Go Camping In India:
1. Know Where It's Allowed
Wild camping in India exists in a bit of a grey area. It's not exactly illegal, but it's also not widely encouraged unless you're on private land or have explicit permission. States like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and parts of the Northeast are more relaxed about it. Ladakh is a top choice, especially near Tso Moriri or Pangong Tso (but camp only in designated zones). In the South, Coorg and Wayanad offer forested spaces, but you need permits in most areas. Always talk to locals or forest officials before pitching a tent.
2. Bring Food You Actually Want To Eat
Maggi is a camping classic, but there's only so much you can eat. Pre-cooked rice packets, theplas, dry sabzis, and energy bars work well. Pack masala, tea bags, and instant coffee — you'll thank yourself. Avoid meat unless you can keep it properly stored. No one wants a stomach issue in the middle of nowhere.
3. Choose Your Spot Wisely
Don't just stop where the view looks good. You want a flat, dry surface, away from cliffs, rivers (they can rise overnight), or animal trails. In India, human-wildlife conflict is a real issue. Avoid camping deep inside forests unless you have a guide. Also, check for ant hills. Trust us on that.
4. Network With Locals
Villagers and local guides can be your best allies. They can help you find safe spots, warn you about wild animals or weather changes, and sometimes even let you pitch on their farmland (a small payment helps). A little Hindi — or better, the local language — goes a long way.
5. Get Offline, But Not Lost
Mobile coverage vanishes fast in the hills or jungles. Download offline maps (MapMyIndia, Google Maps offline, or Gaia GPS), and always carry a physical map. Leave your itinerary with someone before you head out. A basic compass doesn't hurt either.
6. Don't Skimp On Gear
Camping stores aren't on every corner in India, so prep before you go. A lightweight tent, a weather-appropriate sleeping bag, and a foam mat are essentials. Nights in the hills — even in summer — can be brutal, so layer up. Insects are a real thing here, so get a mosquito net or a good repellent. Portable stoves (like the small but mighty butane ones) are lifesavers, especially in remote areas.
7. Don't Ignore The Weather
India's weather can flip in minutes. In the Western Ghats, it can pour without warning. In the north, winds pick up fast after sunset. Always check the IMD forecast before heading out and pack rain gear even if the sky looks clear.
8. Toilets? Make A Plan
Public toilets in remote spots are rare. Carry a small trowel to dig a cat hole at least six inches deep. Stay away from water sources. Bring biodegradable wet wipes and always pack out sanitary products. A foldable toilet tent is a good idea if you're in a group.
9. Respect Nature And People
This one's non-negotiable. Don't leave litter. Don't light fires unless you know it's safe (dry leaves mean disaster). Don't blast music. And don't share your exact camp location on social media in real-time — it attracts the wrong kind of attention.

Indore Couple Was Seen With 3 Men Before Disappearing in Meghalaya: Guide
Shillong: A tourist guide on Saturday claimed that the honeymoon couple from Indore, Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam, was accompanied by three men on the day they went missing from Meghalaya's Sohra area. An official confirmed that the guide had provided this information to the police. While the couple went missing on May 23, Raja's body was found in a gorge on June 2 while a search for his wife was underway. Speaking to PTI, Albert Pde, a guide at Mawlakhiat, said he had seen the couple accompanied by three male tourists as they were climbing over 3,000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat around 10 am on May 23. He said he recognised the couple as he had offered his services to them on the previous day to climb down to Nongriat but they had politely refused and hired another guide. "The four men were walking ahead while the woman was behind. The four men were conversing in Hindi but I could not understand what they were speaking as I know only Khasi and English," Pde said. He said that he had offered his services to take them to Nongriat on May 22 but they had hired another guide, named Bha Wansai, and spent the night at Shipara homestay and returned the next day without a guide. "By the time I reached Mawlakhiat, their scooter was not there," the guide claimed. He has also given his statement to the police. The newlywed's rented scooter was found at Sohrarim, several kilometres from the parking lot at Mawlakhiat with the keys latched to it. Meanwhile, even as Sonam is yet to be traced, his brother Govind, who is camping in Shillong, accused the state government of not doing enough and searching for her "like she is dead". "We strongly believe Sonam is alive. They are searching for her like she is dead," Govind said, urging authorities to take help from the CBI or any other agencies. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has assured that the government was leaving "no stone unturned" to find the missing woman. However, the terrain, extremely heavy rainfall and foggy weather conditions that reduce visibility to only a few feet were affecting the search operation. "We are trying our best... our boys are doing what they can without rest using gadgets and trained dogs. The search will continue," East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said. Raja's decomposed body was found in a gorge near Weisawdong falls on June 2. A gold ring and a neck chain were found missing from his body, further leading to suspicion that he was murdered. A day later, a bloodstained machete was discovered nearby and two days later, a raincoat that was similar to the one used by the couple was found in Mawkma village, half-way between Sohrarim and the gorge where Raja's body was found. Another CCTV footage from one of the homestays showed that Sonam was wearing a similar raincoat. At the Mawlakhiat parking lot, there are no CCTVs and no registers to record the vehicles being parked. "The village itself has very poor infrastructure and inconsistent power supply," an elder at the village said. Asked if the couple and the three other men left Mawlakhiat together, he said he could not remember any specific individual since there are many visitors in a day. The locals have decided to start recording the vehicle numbers and visitors' phone numbers. A special investigation team headed by an SP and assisted by four DSPs is probing the matter. The search for Sonam is continuing with the participation of NDRF, SDRF, mountaineers, sniffer dogs and drones.

Sonali Bendre recalls visiting Babulnath Temple and Siddhivinayak Temple with Coldplay's Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson: ‘She's such a lovely person'
When British singer Chris Martin of Coldplay visited India earlier this year, it wasn't just his music that stole hearts. Alongside Hollywood actress Dakota Johnson , the duo surprised fans by exploring the spiritual side of Mumbai. They were joined by Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre and 'Swades' star Gayatri Oberoi during their quiet yet meaningful visit to some of the city's most iconic temples. Before Coldplay's big concerts at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on January 18 and 19, Chris and Dakota paid a special visit to the Babulnath Temple. Photos and videos of the couple offering prayers along with Sonali and Gayatri quickly went viral, showing them soaking in the spiritual vibe. Sonali recalls taking Dakota and Chris to Mumbai's famous temples In her interview with ANI, Sonali Bendre fondly remembered the moment she was asked to join the group on their spiritual journey. She said, "She's (Dakota) such a lovely person. It was my yoga teacher who told me that, you know what, somebody is coming in and they want to be taken to a few temples. Will you do this? I'm like, okay, who is it? And that's how I get to know. So I think Chris and her (Dakota) wanted to have a temple experience. And I think that's an experience everybody should have at some point. It was lovely. With her (and Chris), we had visited Babulnath Temple. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NYC Hotel Smartphone Booking | Bookmark Now! | New York City Hotel Booking | Mill Canyon Road Click Here Undo And then the next day, we visited Siddhivinayak Temple." At the Babulnath Temple, they offered prayers, and the next day, the group went to Siddhivinayak Temple, one of Mumbai's most famous religious spots. Dakota wore traditional attire and was seen chatting happily with Sonali and Gayatri as they walked through the temple grounds. Break-up rumours surround Chris and Dakota While their temple visits showed a peaceful side, Chris and Dakota's relationship has been in the news for other reasons. Reports say they have split. A source told PEOPLE magazine, 'It feels final this time.' Neither Chris nor Dakota's teams have commented on this. Earlier in 2024, it was said that the couple had been engaged for years but were not rushing to marry. When rumours of a breakup started in August 2024, Dakota's representative said they were 'happily together.' A source added, 'Sure, they've had issues and taken breaks in the past, but things are great now. They both love their careers. They are balancing things the best they can.' In June 2024, it was reported they had 'ups and downs, but now they're definitely back on.' So far, Chris and Dakota have not spoken about the recent split rumours.
