Eklund Sets New Career High In Points; Sharks Beat Sabres For Second Straight Win
William Eklund had a goal and an assist to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 6-2 win over the Buffalo Sabre.
San Jose has won two in a row after dropping eight straight. Eklund's 46 points passed his career high of 45, which he set last season in 80 games. Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, Nico Sturm, Timothy Liljegren, and Tyler Toffoli scored for San Jose. Alexander Georgiev made 20 saves for his second win in as many days.
JJ Peterka and Tage Thompson scored for the Sabres, who have lost four straight. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 23 saves.
Vitek Vanecek didn't play despite the back-to-back scenario due to trade-related reasons.

Collin Graf threw a puck in front of the net, and after it deflected off a Sabres defender, Sturm scored at 18:22 to give the Sharks a 2-1 lead.

Eklund gave the Sharks a 3-1 lead with a shot from the corner that hit UPL's glove and went in at 2:17 of the third period.

The Philadelphia Flyers have lost one of their depth goalies, as Eetu Makiniemi has signed a one-year contract with TPS of the Finnish Liiga. Makiniemi, 26, signed a one-year contract with the Flyers for the 2024-25 season back in September. This was after he attended the Flyers' training camp on a professional tryout. Advertisement Unfortunately, Makiniemi's season ended in November after he suffered a sports hernia that required surgery. In five games with the Flyers' AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, he posted a 3-0-1 record, a .899 save percentage, and a 3.03 goals-against average. Makiniemi was eligible to hit the market as a Group 6 UFA this summer, but will instead be taking his talents overseas after landing this new deal. The Carolina Hurricanes selected Makiniemi with the 104th overall pick of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, but he never played a game for the club. In his two career NHL games with the San Jose Sharks during the 2022-23 season, he recorded a 1-0-1 record, a .906 save percentage, and a 2.13 goals-against average. Yesterday, former San Jose Sharks head coach Bob Boughner landed a new job in the NHL as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders, joining Ray Bennett, who was also hired by the team. Boughner will work under Islanders head coach Patrick Roy as they look to turn the franchise around. During his time with the Sharks, Boughner posted a record of 67-85-23. He was originally named interim coach after Pete DeBoer was fired and went on to spend three seasons as head coach from 2020 to 2022 before being let go. Advertisement He previously served as an assistant coach with the Sharks from 2015 to 2017, before leaving to become the head coach of the Florida Panthers. After being fired from that role, he returned to San Jose. For the past three seasons, Boughner was the associate coach with the Detroit Red Wings, working under both Derek LaLonde and Todd McLellan. He'll have his work cut out for him with the Islanders. After a disappointing season that ended early, the team landed the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and now has a chance to reshape its future. We've got 91 days left until the New Orleans Saints open up their 2025 season, which means it's time to continue our countdown with every player to wear No. 91 for the black and gold. The No. 91 jersey currently belongs to rookie defensive tackle Vernon Broughton, who the Saints drafted in Round 3 out of Texas this year. The late Will Smith accomplished more than anyone else to use No. 91, having retired with the fourth-most sacks in franchise history (67.5; his protege Cameron Jordan later surpassed him to claim the all-time Saints record).
