Metro launches London Grassroots Music Tube Map to spotlight city's top venues

Metro12-05-2025

Metro is joining forces with the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and top music industry figures to put the capital's grassroots music scene centre stage.
Many of the world's favourite musicians, from the Rolling Stones and Iron Maiden to Raye and Chappell Roan, made their names in London's vibrant grassroots venues.
It's no exaggeration to say music is a fundamental part of the city's fabric, inspiring and entertaining millions over the decades.
But with London's nightlife under threat, the time has come to shine a spotlight on the artists and venues that are at the heart of the city's music industry.
In tomorrow's Metro, you will find an exclusive new interpretation of the iconic London Tube map – with the names of stations and interchanges replaced with those of artists and locations that form part of the capital's music heritage.
That includes new stars like Loyle Carner, Arlo Parks and SAULT filling in the stops on the Piccadilly line, and legends like Billy Bragg, Adele and Madness on the Northern line.
They have been matched with locations close to where they came from, or which formed an important part of their story.
For example, Pink Floyd has a spot on the Northern Line near Battersea Power Station, which famously featured on the cover of the band's album Animals.
Alongside those much-loved artists are places which have made invaluable contributions to the culture of London, the UK and the world.
Among them are 100 Club on Oxford Street, operating for more than 80 years, and Heaven nightclub, at the heart of the city's LGBTQ+ community for decades.
Many of London's most important venues have faced extensive challenges in recent years, following the Covid pandemic with its lockdowns and the pressures of the cost-of-living crisis. More Trending
In 2024, around a quarter of the 810 grassroots venues supported by the Music Venue Trust across the UK had to ask for help from the organisation's Emergency Response Service to avoid permanent closure.
Now, 179 grassroots remain in London. We want that number not only to be protected, but also to grow.
The Tube map coming out tomorrow demonstrates the vital role those sites play in British cultural life, and why they deserve to be championed.
Created with the Music Venue Trust, the Featured Artists Coalition and Universal Music, it forms part of Transport for London's 25th anniversary celebrations.

Inside Dua Lipa's jaw-dropping Radical Optimism Tour as pop ‘goddess' wows fans ahead of sell out Wembley shows

Bizarre gets an exclusive invitation to the singer's Holland show… and it's amazing SO DAM GREAT Inside Dua Lipa's jaw-dropping Radical Optimism Tour as pop 'goddess' wows fans ahead of sell out Wembley shows DUA LIPA is riding the crest of an enormous wave – and there's no slowing down. After the singer flew me out to Amsterdam as the first British reporter to see her in action on the 80-date Radical Optimism world tour, I'm blown away by how much she's developed as a performer. Advertisement 6 Dua gets a lift on stage during her jaw-dropping performance Credit: Getty In each country so far, including Japan, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand, Dua is held up as a goddess by her fans. And in Amsterdam she gets a rapturous reception after speaking to the sell-out audience in Dutch — which is no easy task. 'Amsterdam is like a second home for us,' Dua's dad and manager Dugi tells me as we catch up over Negroni cocktails before the concert, where I congratulate him on the success of the shows so far. 'It's all for the fans,' he adds with a smile. 'We want them to come to the show and have a great time.' Advertisement It's impossible not to enjoy the two-hour set, in which Dua smashes her way through high-energy dance routines as pyrotechnics explode all around her and confetti falls from the ceiling. New tracks from her latest No1 album, including Training Season, End Of An Era and Falling Forever, go down a storm with the crowd as Dua whips into classics such as One Kiss and Be The One. By playing venues this size — more than 18,000 are at the Amsterdam show — Dua could be forgiven for putting all the focus on to her stage performance. But at every gig she goes into the audience to speak to her fans. Advertisement One sobbing boy, Mattice, can't believe his luck as Dua leans in for a hug, prompting her to joke: 'Please don't cry, we've only just started the show. It's not that bad is it?' Also among the lucky few are a couple due to marry in the next two days, and a superfan wearing a shark's head in a nod to the Radical Optimism album's artwork — with Dua saying as he takes it off: 'Oh, you're cute.' 'Shaken' Dua Lipa in terrifying security scare after fans sneak into her hotel and are found outside her bedroom Her good humour continues and after losing an impromptu game of truth or dare, she picks the latter and is asked to perform the original dance from One Kiss, which has become pop legend. Smiling for the cameras that beam her picture around the arena, Dua dutifully carries off the move and the crowd, who have been right behind her from day one, go absolutely bananas. Advertisement Back on stage, she then goes into Scared To Be Lonely in a tribute to her collaborator, DJ Martin Garrix, who is also watching in the crowd, before nailing Physical, Hallucinate and Illusion. The arena is transformed into a rave, with the audience hooked on every word, before Dua brings the focus on to her powerful vocals. 'You're cute' She makes light work of Be The One and Anything For Love — which is even more impressive given that she has spent 90 minutes going through physically demanding choreography while barely stopping for a break. The energy then fires back up to boiling point for an insanely good four-song encore of New Rules, Dance The Night, Don't Start Now and Houdini, with Dua's high- intensity just as impressive as at the start of the evening. Advertisement She has concerts in Italy and Belgium to go before she will return to the UK for two huge back-to-back shows at Wembley Stadium, on June 20 and 21, and two gigs at Anfield in Liverpool on June 24 and 25. The four dates will see her perform to more than 250,000 fans. It is an incredible comparison when you think that the first Wembley show will take place 3,000 days after her first ever live appearance in the capital, at the 250- capacity Oslo Hackney venue in East London. By the time Dua has finished the UK leg of the tour — before moving on to the US — she will have performed to almost one million people. Advertisement Rising pop stars should take note . . . Dua is living proof that you can become a superstar thanks to hard work, good grace and a bloody good voice. 6 Dua smashes her way through high-energy dance routines as pyrotechnics explode all around Credit: Getty SABRINA IN SHAWN DIG SABRINA CARPENTER has taken aim at her ex Shawn Mendes yet again in new single Manchild. Advertisement Their 2023 fling inspired much of her chart-topping album Short n' Sweet, but it is still giving her inspiration for songs, as she seemingly lays into the hunk on the track released yesterday. 6 Sabrina Carpenter took aim at her ex Shawn Mendes yet again Credit: Goff She sings: 'Half your brain just ain't there,' before adding: 'Why so sexy if so dumb? And how survive the Earth so long?' It is expected to be the first song from her next album, which is impressive given it has only been ten months since her last one came out. Advertisement When she announced the title, many fans believed it would be about actor Barry Keoghan, who she dated for a year until December. But in a caption on Instagram, she said she wrote the track shortly after completing work on Short n' Sweet, at which time she was still in love with Barry. Sabrina said: 'Not only was it fun to write, but this song became to me something I can look back on, that will score the mental montage to the very confusing and fun young adult years of life.' In another nod to Shawn, who is very close to his parents – while Barry's mum died when he was 12 – she sings: 'I choose to blame your mom.' Advertisement I doubt Mrs Mendes will be too pleased. MARIAH REVERTS TO TYPE 6 Mariah Carey has released her first track in seven years Credit: Dennis Leupold MARIAH CAREY is teaming up with visual genius Joseph Khan – the man behind her All I Want For Christmas Is You video – for new single Type Dangerous. She is preparing to film a vid to accompany the track, which came out yesterday. Advertisement It is the first she's put out in seven years and is the debut song from her upcoming 16th studio album. 'I'm so excited to finally be releasing Type Dangerous into the world,' Mariah, left, said. 'I've been locked up in the studio for quite some time working my behind off on new music, and I'm thrilled for the unveiling of it to my fans, starting with Type Dangerous.' Those going to Capital's Summertime Ball with Barclaycard will hear her belt out the song at Wembley next Sunday, before she headlines Brighton Pride on August 2 and performs at the Sandringham Estate on August 15. Advertisement Welcome back, Mariah. We've missed you. OASIS ARE ROTTEN FOR JOHN 6 John Lydon won't be going to an Oasis reunion show Credit: Getty SEX PISTOLS rocker John Lydon says he's probably one of the only British music stars who'll be giving the Oasis reunion a wide berth. When I asked if he would be heading down to one of the shows, the singer, aka Johnny Rotten, told me: 'No. They're my mates but I hate their music. Advertisement 'It's very difficult for me to go to other people's gigs. People don't leave me alone and let me enjoy myself. 'I knocked it on the head a few years ago. I love dancing, you're enjoying yourself and some a***hole will stand right in front of you and waffle banal nonsense which is distracting you from the point and purpose.' Speaking to me from his tour of the UK with his band Public Image LTD, he added: 'I love Noel, because he just says it like it is. 'Him and Liam make me laugh when they do interviews because they are so witty and on it in a working class, quick-as-you can way.' Advertisement DIANA ON HIGH SEAS 6 Diana Ross's UK tour starts this month Credit: Getty DIANA ROSS is swapping arenas for the ocean waves, as godmother of Royal Caribbean's newest ship Star of the Seas. The title has been given to her as she's agreed to perform on the maiden voyage in September, when it will make its debut in Orlando. And Diana will be fresh from her UK tour, which starts this month. Advertisement The Chain Reaction singer said: 'I've always felt a deep connection to the ocean and the magic it represents – peace, adventure and awe. 'When Royal Caribbean reached out to invite me to be the godmother of Star of the Seas, I knew it was something truly special.' WELL done to the brilliant Anna Lapwood after her new album Firedove went straight to the top of the Classical Album Official Charts. The organist recorded it at Nidaros Cathedral in Norway and said: 'I'm very proud of it.'

Alison Hammond shuts down bizarre pregnancy claim in best way possible

Alison Hammond has shut down speculation that she's pregnant in the most hilarious way possible after false rumours spread online. The Great British Bake-Off and This Morning host, 50, has reportedly been the subject of false AI-generated stories that are claiming she's with child. Alison has one child – her son Aidan who was born in 2005 – but she appears to be determined not to have any more if her latest comments are anything to go by. Naturally, Alison has responded to the pregnancy rumours with good spirit and humour, taking to social media to deny them in the best way possible. Posting to her Instagram account, which has 1.7 million followers, she said: 'Lots of AI stories online about me being pregnant, I can confirm I am not having a baby.' She continued: '[I'm definitely not pregnant] as I'm not sure my 50-year-old womb could take it. However, I do think we should all dance like Meghan.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The statement was accompanied by a video of Alison dancing around her living room after stuffing her dress with a giant pillow to mimic a pregnant belly. Referencing the already famous video of Meghan Markle dancing while heavily pregnant with daughter Princess Lillibet, Alison busted a move or two while waving her hands in the air like she just didn't care. In the video, which was taken four years ago, the heavily pregnant Duchess of Sussex is shown dancing in a hospital room to the sound of Starrkeisha song Baby Momma. Meghan posted on her Instagram to celebrate Lili's fourth birthday on Wednesday, writing: 'Four years ago today, this also happened. 'Both of our children were a week past their due dates – so when spicy food, all that walking, and acupuncture didn't work – there was only one thing left to do!' The happy video has (of course) drawn some criticism on social media after Meghan was seen to twerk at one point, with online users criticising her behaviour. For Metro, Kirsty Ketley argued back: '[The video] shows something powerful: joy. A woman, supported by her partner, using music and laughter to cope with one of the most intense moments of their life.' Commenting on Alison's video, Bryony Gordon called Alison 'our queen' while Lisa Snowden applauded, celebrated, and laughed at the clip with a group of emojis. More Trending Scottish radio presenter Jenni Falconer commented saying 'You are just brilliant' and added three big love hearts in her message to Alison. Alison's son Aidan, now 19, was born in 2005 when the Big Weekend presenter was engaged to Noureddine Boufaied – the couple split in 2014. She confessed, 'I felt that failure with [Noureddine] when we broke up, but he moved on and has three other kids now and they are part of our life,' but revealed that they have successfully co-parented over the years. Josh Kelly's and Remy Smith's doomed marriage from lavish wedding to sad split

Boxer Josh Kelly is returning to the ring and taking on Flavius Biea at the Newcastle Arena. Here, the Mirror looks back at the 'Pretty Boy' welterweight's former relationship with Remy Smith Josh 'Pretty Boy' Kelly, 31, is stepping back into the ring and taking on Flavius Biea, 35, at the Newcastle Arena - with hopes that securing a win will set him up for a fight with Connor 'Destroyer' Benn. With the former Olympian heading into his 19th professional fight, he has said he is keen to build on the momentum from the big fight - which will air on Channel 5 - and that he's ready to "enjoy" himself in the ring. ‌ "Whatever comes. I am just looking to go in there and enjoy myself," he has said. "When I am enjoying it, I am at my best, so whatever comes, I am just going to go in there and enjoy myself and forget about everything else. It is another fight, I have had 150 odd at amateur at the top level, now it is going to be my 19th fight as a pro, so it is all good... I cannot wait!" ‌ Both men are on good form, with the Romanian fighter enjoying a 12-match winning streak, and Kelly winning six fights previously - so boxing fans are bound to be in for a treat with this one. Whilst Kelly is going from strength to strength professionally - the 'Pretty Boy' of British boxing - who was previously a model - is increasingly attracting more attention outside of the ring and boasts 422,000 followers on Instagram. So what is life like outside of the ring for the 31-year-old dad of two? Here, the Mirror explores his life away from the spotlight and marriage to ex-wife Remy Smith. Early days of romance Josh and Remy - an influencer with 18,100 followers on Instagram - started dating in their early 20s, with Remy sharing a sweet snap of Josh leaning against the ropes of a boxing ring back in 2017, the same year he turned from amateur to professional. In another post dedicated to her partner in 2017, Remy captioned a sweet series of photographs of the pair with a touching tribute to Josh on his birthday. "Happy birthday to the fiancé...I just want to say I am so proud of an inspiration to so many people out there and that's something you should be proud working hard and I'll support you all the way through". ‌ Remy added: "It's only the beginning for you pbk [Pretty Boy Kelly]...thanks for making me the happiest girl ever. I love you from the bottom of my heart..." Hilariously, the couple also accidentally went viral in 2017, after a perspective-boggling holiday snap took the internet by storm. The image saw the couple standing in front of palm tree, but Remy just so happened to be carrying a handbag that was exactly the same colour as the tree's bark, which made it look like she was effortlessly carrying an entire tree. ‌ Remy took the internet's confusion in her stride, jokingly posting on her Instagram a screenshot from a Daily Mail article of the moment and captioning it: "My strength is seriously going viral now," and tagging her then-fiancé. Lavish Mayfair Wedding The pair tied the knot two years later in June 2019, in a seriously lavish ceremony. ‌ Boxing legend Frank Bruno was said to be in attendance, having been a mentor to Josh. Other big name guests reportedly included David Seaman, his wife Frankie who appeared on Dancing on Ice, as well as Ashley and Dawn Ward, and other faces from the boxing scene. Remy wore a stunning bridal gown designed by Galia Lahav with a dramatic long veil that featured intricate embroidery around the edge. Josh opted for a timeless white suit jacket by Tom Ford, with a black bow tie and smart, matching trousers. ‌ The couple tied the knot at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, a Catholic church bang slap in the middle of one of London's most luxurious neighbourhoods. They then hosted a reception for all 165 of their loved ones - per the wedding photographer, Roberta Facchini - at the elite Royal Horseguards Hotel. The photographer also revealed that the guests were kept entertained by a magician and that the dinner was accompanied by "touching speeches" adding that, "the ambience of the beautiful reception was classy sophistication with a healthy touch of down-to-earth". When it came to the flowers, no expense was spared, with gorgeous arrangements placed on every table, and an incredibly extravagant flower arch behind the top table. Similarly, the wedding cake was stunning - with delicate floral decorations on the seven-tiered creation. ‌ Finally, when it came time to take to the dancefloor, the newlyweds chose Always Remember Us This Way - from the A Star Is Born soundtrack - for their first dance before their loved ones joined them for a boogie. Growing family The couple share two sons, the eldest of whom was present at their wedding. ‌ The boxer and Remy welcomed Joshua Junior to their family in the Autumn of 2018, with Remy sharing a heartwarming post in tribute to her first born: a photo of Joshua Junior as a tiny baby cuddling up to a massive, oversized teddy bear. " Little man is one week old today and what a week it's been," she wrote. "It's been the most amazing no love like it! I couldn't have done it without you the most amazing daddy and he is so lucky to have you," she added, tagging her partner, who seemed to have been called away from the newborn bubble for a boxing obligation. "We are missing you but tomorrow is the night you get under them lights again we are so proud of you! We can't wait to cheer you on and have you home again! Our champ". ‌ In May 2020, the couple welcomed their second son: Roman Paul Kelly. At the time social distancing restrictions were in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which made labour for many women more lonely and frightening. Whilst Remy didn't share any details on how, or if, the pandemic impacted her experience giving birth, she hinted that it had been something of an overwhelming experience when she announced on social media that Roman had arrived. ‌ "Here he is it's certainly been a ride the last 24 hours, but our 6 pound 5 bundle of joy Roman Paul love you with all our hearts and can't wait to take you home to your big brother". Break u While both Remy and Josh regularly post their two beautiful sons on their social media - it seems the young couple have called it quits on their romance. The last time Josh mentioned his former wife on his social media was back in February 2023, when he captioned a holiday snap of himself with JJ and Roman by saying, "Love seeing my two boys growing up nothing more more sun and sand soon to and cheese these me and the wife @remykellyx live for these two little men." ‌ Remy has also changed her Instagram handle back to Smith, changing it from her married name of Kelly. What's more, Josh and Remy have also posted snaps with new partners this year, so it seems the pair have both moved on from the split. ‌ These days, 'Pretty Boy Kelly' is now dating a digital creator and founder of a marketing agency - Bego Maestro, who lives in Seville. The couple seem to be making it work long distance, with Bego captioning a post about Josh by saying, "The one who didn't want to love, is counting the days to see you again... "After all these months, the distance still makes me ball but without a doubt, having a date to see each other again makes the difference," and hinted that she was excited for the big fight, "Countdown begins to see us and your big proud of you". Bego and Josh have enjoyed a series of holidays together, heading on a luxury holiday to Dubai in recent months, and also taking his two little boys on holiday, including on a day to a waterpark. Remy also seems to have found new love, posting a series of cute snaps with her current partner, and captioning one: "Finding my best friend and soulmate in one person is truly special. Thank you for the endless giggles and smiles! I love you forever" and in another writing, "No one comes close".
