Official: Egypt To Host U20 AFCON After Cote D'Ivoire Pulled Out
Egypt will host the U20 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) after Cote D'Ivoire withdrew at the last minute last Tuesday, citing 'unforeseen circumstances.'
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) wasted no time in handing Cairo the tournament set to run from April 27 to May 18.
But the real drama is already brewing in Group B, where Morocco are facing a tough draw – against Nigeria, South Africa, and the hosts, Egypt.
The Pharaohs will have the home advantage and their fiery fans behind them, and will be itching to relive past glories, having seized the U20 AFCON title on home soil in 1991 and 2003.
This comes after Cote D'Ivoire pulled out from hosting the competition just weeks before the official start.
The shock decision, reportedly made by the Ivorian government, was confirmed by the country's football federation (FIF).
In a statement, FIF President Yacine Idriss Diallo said:
'Yacine Idriss Diallo, President of the Ivorian Football Federation and Chairman of the U20 Organising Committee, informs you that the government has notified the Ivorian Football Federation, via an official letter, of Ivory Coast's withdrawal as the host country for the U20 AFCON.'
Speculation is rife over the real reasons behind the move. But despite the turmoil, the federation attempted to downplay the impact, thanking those who had been involved in the preparations.
'The President would like to extend his deep appreciation to everyone for their commitment and the efforts made towards organising this competition.' Tags: U20 AFCONU20 EgyptU20 Morocco

Morocco Edges Benin 1-0 in Friendly Game
Rabat – Morocco played Benin this evening at the Fez Grand Stadium in a highly anticipated friendly game. The match drew a full house in Fez, with large numbers of local fans supporting the national team in a key test of tactical depth and squad rotation. Morocco claimed a hard-fought win against a resilient Benin side that struggled to contain the Atlas Lions' attacking efforts. In the first half, Morocco dominated possession and maintained pressure deep in Benin's half, patiently searching for an opening. Just when it seemed the teams would head into the break level, Ayoub El Kaabi delivered a moment of brilliance in the 47th minute, into stoppage time. Latching onto a well-placed cross, he executed a spectacular scissor kick past the goalkeeper, sending the crowd in Fez into celebration. The goal was a deserved reward for Morocco's control throughout the half and gave the team a boost heading into the second period. Morocco kept pressing for a second goal after the break, but a series of missed chances and solid defending from Benin kept the score unchanged, and the match ended with a deserved 1-0 win for the home side. The international friendly is part of the teams' preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Morocco secured a 2-0 win in Friday's friendly against Tunisia, but the team's overall performance left much to be desired. These two friendly matches present Morocco a valuable window to fine-tune its tactical approach, experiment with squad depth, and strengthen team chemistry ahead of high-stakes continental competitions. With strong fan support and a clear vision for the months ahead, the Atlas Lions remain focused on building consistency and momentum. Best U17 Youth Player: Morocco's Ilies Belmokhtar Named Golden Kid
Rabat – Morocco's rising star Ilies Belmokhtar has been named the best U17 youth player competing in France at the inaugural Golden Kid Awards. Le Monde Du Foot reported that Belmokhtar is taking home a well-deserved recognition, rewarding his exceptional 2024-2025 season. 'For this inaugural edition, Ilies Belmokhtar truly shone. Gifted with genuine tactical maturity, he was one of the key architects of AS Monaco's success in youth competitions this season,' the same source said. Commenting on his new achievement, Belmokhtar commented that the award is a 'great pride.' 'Especially to my parents, I hope they are proud of me,' he said . The same sports-focused website recalled the triumphs the Atlas Cub has achieved with Morocco, including his U17 Africa Cup of Nations win in April. The Golden Kid awards seek to recognize the best young developing players in France. The initiative is the fruit of L'Equipe journalist Loic Tanzi and streamer Isoline Almeida. In May, Ilies Belmokhtar signed his first professional contract with AS Monaco. Belmokhtar was born in Ivry-sur-Seine in 2008, and joined the AS Monaco Academy in 2023. In April, the Atlas Cub was among the five players from the national U-17 team selected for the Best XI of the Under-17 AFCON in its 15th edition. In addition to Belmokhtar, the players chosen for the Best XI include: goalkeeper Chouaib Bellaarouch, right-back Moncef Zekri, central defender Driss Aït Chiekh, and attacking midfielder Abdellah Ouazzane. Morocco's AFCON triumph came after a dramatic 0-0 draw against Mali in the final, followed by a 4-2 win in the penalty shootout, securing their spot in football history. Morocco defeats Tunisia 2-0 in friendly match
The Moroccan national football team secured a hard-fought 2–0 victory over Tunisia on Friday night at the Fès Sports Complex in a high-intensity friendly match. The goals came late in the game, with Achraf Hakimi scoring in the 80th minute and Ayoub El Kaabi sealing the win in stoppage time (90+3). This North African derby, played in front of a sold-out crowd, served as a key part of both teams' preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON Morocco 2025). The match also marked the official reopening of the Fès Sports Complex, which had recently undergone renovations ahead of the continental tournament. The encounter proved to be a serious test for the Atlas Lions, reflecting the level of competition they can expect at the AFCON. Tunisia started the game aggressively, dominating possession early and trying to dictate the tempo. However, despite their early pressure and Morocco's initial haste, they failed to seriously challenge goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Morocco entered the match missing several key players, including Brahim Diaz, Nayef Aguerd, and Abdessamad Ezzalzouli. Coach Walid Regragui opted for a reshuffled starting lineup, with Jawad El Yamiq and Adam Masina forming the central defensive pairing, flanked by full-backs Zakaria Belaamri and Achraf Hakimi.
