Colorado bears are waking up early as temperatures rise; CPW urges residents to secure trash, food sources
As temperatures rise, some bears in Colorado are beginning to wake from their winter slumber, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
CPW is reminding residents to secure food sources and follow best practices to avoid
human-bear conflicts
.
"Coloradans have lived alongside bears for generations, but our habitats have never overlapped like this before," CPW said in a statement. "As bears start to wake up, we're asking everyone to keep easy snacks out of reach to help keep bears wild."
Southwestern Colorado is seeing early bear activity due to lower snowpack and warmer temperatures, which trigger the animals' biological response to get up and move. However, CPW notes that bears in Colorado do not hibernate in the traditional sense.
"Bears in Colorado go into torpor, which means they do wake up during the winter months to look for food and replenish their calorie deficit," CPW spokesperson Kara Van Hoose said. "That happens in Colorado because we don't have the extremely cold temperatures seen farther north, like in Alaska, where bears truly hibernate."
To help reduce human-bear conflicts, CPW is offering grants to communities looking to implement bear-aware initiatives, such as bear-proof trash cans. More information on these programs is available on

Spring storms and heat create dangerous conditions on lakes and trails
CHATFIELD RESERVOIR, Colo. (KDVR) — Rain and high winds across the metro area affected thousands in the metro area over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Flooding caused a traffic backup on northbound Interstate 25 just north of Arapahoe Road on Sunday. Chatfield Reservoir and other lakes sat empty as storms passed through Colorado. 'It's a little scary,' said Williams. CPW encourages anyone planning to enjoy the outdoors to schedule trips based on information from weather reports and pack proper gear. 'I've got some rain gear on just to keep you dry, you know, as long as you're prepared, in Colorado, you can go out and do whatever,' said one visitor. Melting snowpacks on mountain peaks also create muddy trails, extremely cold water in creeks, lakes and reservoirs, as well as stronger currents. CPW says life jackets are required for minors, including those who are paddleboarding and participating in other water sports. Life jackets can also help to maintain core body temperature in colder temperatures in the case of an emergency. Additional rain can increase the growth of plants and weeds, which, after drying out, can increase the risk of wildfires. CPW says residents and visitors should be careful to follow fire safety guidelines and prevent the misuse of flammable materials or anything that can cause sparks, like allowing metal to drag from the bottom of vehicles. How strong was that tornado? How the EF scale works
DENVER (KDVR) — People often think of mountains when they think of Colorado, but the Centennial State isn't all ski slopes — much of the state looks more like Kansas, and the severe weather reflects that. The severe weather season is beginning. In the summer, warmer temperatures allow for stronger storms to develop, often in the afternoons, earning Colorado a spot in hail alley. Nearly 40% of the state is made up of high plains, which are part of the Great Plains, according to Colorado State University. Colorado's severe weather was displayed on Sunday when storms produced hail the size of eggs, and multiple tornadoes swept through the state, damaging more than 30 structures. The National Weather Service said Tuesday that the tornadoes were significant with 'considerable' damage, with an Enhanced Fujita scale ranking of an EF-2. The Fujita Scale was improved by nationally renowned meteorologists and engineers to create the EF scale, which has been used to rate tornadoes since 2007, according to the NWS. Depending on the strength, tornadoes can cause damage ranging from broken tree branches and gutters, to roofs being blown off, vehicles being blown around and houses even swept away. The chart below shows the expected damage for each of the ratings, according to the NWS: The most destructive tornadoes in Colorado have ranged from EF-0 to EF-3 over the last decade. Tornadoes are rare in Denver, but they are not an unusual occurrence in the plains. According to the NWS, Colorado gets an average of 53 tornadoes each year, and 95% of those occur east of Interstate 25. Tornadoes hit Colorado, and this likely won't be the last Tornadoes are most common from May through August, and the Pinpoint Weather team expects more throughout the season.
