State Police dealing with multiple crashes on I-74

CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Portions of Interstates 55 and 74 have been shut down due to the low visibility from dust storms.

In a Facebook post at 6:18 p.m., Illinois State Police Troop 5 announced they have shut down I-55 from South Bloomington to McLean, I-74 from South Bloomington to Farmer City and U.S. Route 136 from McLean City to Heyworth due to low visibility caused by the dust storms. Drivers are urged to drive with caution and avoid unnecessary travel in this area.
CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Illinois State Police is on the scene of a number of accidents on Interstate 74 in the Troop 5 and Troop 7 areas.
At approximately 5:38 p.m., I-74 westbound was closed at the Mansfield exit. As of 6:10 p.m., State Police was on the scene at five accidents on I-74 in the Troop 7 area and three crashes in the Troop 5 area. At this time, none of these incidents have resulted in fatalities.

Driver hospitalized after wind blows over semi-truck on I-74 in Champaign Co.
At 6:31 p.m., State Police announced that Troop 7 units are assisting Troop 5 units with a traffic diversion of I-74 W at Farmer City due to high winds and dust in DeWitt and McLean Counties. Traffic is currently being diverted into Farmer City at exit 159 westbound until the conditions subside and it's safe to travel on the interstate.
Additionally, a portion of I-55 is expected to be closed due to the weather conditions. State Police Troop 7 will continue to post updates on their Facebook page.

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – From winter storms to hurricanes, emergencies in Walton County can change quickly. That's why officials are turning to technology to keep people informed and alert. 'One of the critical processes that we needed in Walton County was an interactive map for our residents and visitors to be able to see real-time data of road closures as well as resources in a disaster,' said Walton County Emergency Management Operations Coordinator Catie Feeney. It's called 'Perimeter Map,' an online tool for residents to enter their address and instantly see nearby hazards. The site updates in real time, showing things like road closures, storm zones, emergency shelter locations and evacuation routes. EPIC Van Tours begins for Walton County School District The map was first used during the winter weather earlier this year, but officials say it's especially useful now as hurricane season begins. 'It shows the entire road closure, it highlights it and you can zoom in and actually get some more information. If you click on the actual road closure, it can give a description so we can give additional information of maybe what the hazard is. In addition to road closures, we can also see where points of distribution are or pods where we will be handing out food and water tarps, as well as evacuation shelters,' Feeney continued. The tool created in California works on smartphones, tablets and computers, making it easy to check on the go. Walton County Public Works provide updates on several projects All users do is put in their location, and, from there, Perimeter Map will show what is happening around you. 'If you can operate a smartphone, if you can operate Facebook, it is very easy. This is not only going to help us in response, but it's also going to help us in recovery long term, where people can get that disaster assistance they deserve,' Feeney added. Generosity from community shines as McAlester recovers from Saturday's storms
On the morning of June 7, McAlester residents woke up to see buildings with their roofs ripped away and tree branches scattered in the road. The community of around 18,000 was only under a marginal risk of severe weather, but it 'experienced a mix of both wind and tornado damage,' according to the National Weather Service in Tulsa. With any catastrophe in Pittsburg County, however, compassion rises. Anyone part of the 'What's going on in Pittsburg County' Facebook group has seen the familiar postings of Starla's Sloppy Hog appearances in McAlester. The food truck makes a weekly 50-mile trip to serve barbecue in the Dollar General parking lot. When co-owners Chris and Starla Workman found out about the disaster, they said they immediately knew they wanted to help those in need in a place that has given them and the business unwavering support. 'For me and Starla, it's all about giving back to the community that's provided so much to us,' Chris Workman said. 'We get as much enjoyment out of this as we do winning any trophy doing barbecue competitions or anything like that.' Brad Bevans, owner of All About U Plumbing in McAlester, also said he wanted to do his part in helping the community in which he was born and raised. His company is still offering free emergency plumbing services to storm victims and has already helped 25 people. 'If I can help somebody and it makes a difference in their life, that's what I was sent here for,' Bevans said. McAlester resident SkyAnn Golden summarized the heart of the community best, saying disaster brings out true generosity in people who always want to help those in need through trying times. Golden and her husband Charlie are co-owners of Golden Drywall and Remodeling and have worked tirelessly since the sound of the tornado sirens faded Saturday. The couple has removed tree limbs and debris from the roofs of McAlester residents unable to do the work themselves. 'I know that a lot of times we see the bad news and the bad things that are going on, but there's a lot of good people in this community,' SkyAnn Golden said. 'I'm grateful and I'm thankful that we're in a community that can come together and can help people when they're in need.'
