FBI, local agencies capture man accused of shooting AR-15 at Thurston County deputy
A man wanted for allegedly firing an AR-15 rifle at a Thurston County sheriff's deputy was arrested Tuesday afternoon near the Nevada-California border, ending a multi-day manhunt across multiple states, according to the Thurston County Sheriff's Office.
The FBI Criminal Apprehension Team, with air support, used a Grappler device to stop the vehicle carrying 27-year-old Damien Madison and his mother.
Both were taken into custody.
Authorities say the arrest followed a coordinated effort between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
The search for Madison began after deputies say he opened fire on a pursuing K9 deputy during a chase that started in Grays Harbor and ended in Thurston County.
According to Sheriff Derek Sanders, Madison began throwing objects at the patrol vehicle before firing multiple rounds from an AR-15, disabling the deputy's vehicle on Waldrick Road Southeast.
Madison then ran into nearby woods after being dropped off by a driver, who was arrested at the scene. A large-scale search followed, involving SWAT teams, Guardian One helicopter support, and officers from surrounding jurisdictions.
Sheriff Sanders said Madison had a long criminal history, including car theft and burglary, and warned the public he was 'armed and dangerous.' He speculated during the search that Madison could be hiding in an unoccupied outbuilding or may have already stolen another vehicle.
'He has a history of stealing cars after fleeing from stolen cars,' Sanders said. 'He's also a prolific burglar, so there's a decent chance that he is in someone's shed, barn, or house, which may be not occupied.'
Sanders also expressed frustration over what he said were repeated warnings about Madison's danger to the community. 'Last time I talked about him, I actually specifically stated that if the judges don't start taking this seriously, that someone's going to get hurt or killed, and here we are—shooting at the police,' Sanders said.
Officials have not yet released details on the charges Madison and his mother may face following their capture.

Suspect pleads guilty to role in $436K courier robbery in Swansea
SWANSEA, Mass. (WPRI) — A Bridgewater man is due to be sentenced for his role in a coordinated armed robbery that happened outside a Swansea bank last year. Steven Madison, 39, pleaded guilty this week in federal court to several charges including robbery and conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, U.S. Attorney Leah Foley's office announced. Madison was arrested in May 2024 along with two other suspects, Christopher White and Quentin McDonald. Prosecutors alleged that Madison and White committed the robbery, while McDonald was the getaway driver. The robbery occurred on the afternoon of Feb. 19, 2024, outside the BayCoast Bank branch on Swansea Mall Drive. Police said a courier pulled up to the bank's dropbox to deposit more than $436,000 in cash collected from several area cannabis dispensaries. It was then, according to police, that the suspects pulled up behind the courier, pointed a gun at him and zip-tied his hands before loading the money into a stolen U-Haul van. The victim was also pepper-sprayed at one point. Police said the courier got one of his hands loose and fired four rounds at the suspects' vehicle as they fled. The suspects drove to another location in town where McDonald was waiting in an SUV, then torched the U-Haul van. BACKGROUND: 3 charged with robbing courier of $436K outside Swansea bank A fourth suspect, Elgun Mikaiylov, was later charged for allegedly helping to plan and execute the robbery. Police said he was a manager at one of the dispensaries and provided information about the courier service and cash pickups. According to court documents, when police searched Madison's home, they found one of the phones associated with the robbery, along with a $47,000 Rolex bought the day after it happened, more than $5,000 cash, a bag of cocaine and a loaded handgun. In addition to the robbery charges, Madison pleaded guilty to brandishing a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and possession with intent to distribute cocaine. Burglary suspect steals THC, vape products after shooting door of Clarksville business
