From 70 tola gold jewellery, Rs 80,000 in cash to passports and Bhagavad Gita, one of the first responders has revealed the items found at the site where Air India's London-bound plane crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane first hit the mess building of BJ Medical College Civil Hospital and then crashed into the Atulyam Hostel, where senior residents doctors stayed. Both buildings suffered heavy damage and casualties.
Raju Patel, 56, a construction businessman, who was minutes away from the spot, was among the first to reach. 'For the first 15-20 minutes, we could not even go near the debris. My team did not have stretchers, but they did not lose courage. Sarees and sheets were used to lift the injured. We used whatever we had. We only knew that we had to save lives. As soon as the first fire brigade and 108 ambulance reached the spot, we jumped into the rescue work," Patel told Navbharat Times, recounting the incident.
Patel said among the goods spread on the ground were scorched bags and broken things. 'We recovered 70 tola gold jewellery, Rs 80,000 in cash, several passports and a Bhagavad Gita. All these things were immediately handed over to the police," he told NBT.
The officials allowed Patel and his team to stay at the spot till 9 pm. When the emergency services took control, Patel's team started searching the debris.
Patel had also participated in relief work during the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts. Recalling that horrific incident, he said, 'I was only 100 meters away from the civil hospital when the bomb exploded there. But this time's devastation… this fire… I will never forget it."
Netizens are applauding Patel and his team on social media, calling them 'true heroes". Many civil organizations have also appreciated his contribution and invited him to join emergency services in future.
Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi said on Sunday that all the recovered personal items are being documented and they will be handed over to the families of the deceased. Praising citizens like Patel, he said that the role of citizens is invaluable in such emergency situations.

The casket carrying the remains of Sumeet Sabharwal, who was 55, was brought in from Ahmedabad to his apartment in Jal Vayu Vihar by his nephews earlier Tuesday morning. He said Sumeet was a family man and used to take care of his ageing father. He had been extra attentive since Sumeet's mother passed away 2 years ago. Businessman Niranjan Hiranandani and local MLA Dilip Lande were among those who visited the Sabharwal residence to pay their respects. A guard, who did not wish to be named, told ThePrint that people had started pouring in from 6 am onwards. 'The complex started filling in from 6 am onwards. Even media persons, huge police security, big officers from the police force were present. A lot of them from neighbouring societies also came.' At around 9:45 am, the body was taken for last rites, which were performed at an electric crematorium in suburban Chakala in the presence of family members. The family members left the crematorium around 11 am. Captain Sumeet was the pilot of flight AI-171 to London that crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad. 241 people aboard—229 passengers and 12 crew members—were killed, with only a sole person, a passenger, surviving. Investigations into the cause of the crash are still ongoing. Remembered as a polite & smiling man Sanjay Singh, his neighbour and friend, told ThePrint that earlier, Sumeet used to stay in Delhi, while his parents stayed in Mumbai. However, in 2022, when his mother passed away, Sumeet shifted base to Mumbai to take care of his father. 'He was a doting son. He cared about his family a lot. Whenever he was around, he would not miss a single session of taking his father down for a walk. We used to all meet and greet in society,' said Sanjay Singh. 'In fact, even the day before the accident, I met Sumeet in the complex. He was wearing a simple t-shirt and shorts, and was just a regular and smiling fellow. His father, Pushkaraj, was the senior most in our society, and all of us used to take his blessings,' he added. His friends remember him as a caring and polite person. At one point, Sumeet had even discussed quitting his Air India flying job to take up a regular job so he could take care of his father. 'He was a thorough gentleman and a dedicated person. I am just in tears even thinking about him. He used to live in the building next to mine. A soul departed too soon. When I heard about the news, I couldn't believe it,' said 68-year-old neighbour Ratan Lal Singh. His friends, whom ThePrint spoke to, recalled how the father went completely numb after hearing the news of the demise of his son. He is still in shock and is quiet, not in a condition to speak. 'What can he do? It is the biggest tragedy for any father. Normally, a son performs last rites for a father, but here, a father has to see his son depart before him,' said Sanjay Singh. Viswashkumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, has been released from the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad. In a telephonic conversation with Aaj Tak, Ramesh confirmed that he is heading home and will perform the last rites of his younger brother on an Indian-origin British national, was amongst the 242 people on board the London-bound flight that crashed shortly after take-off on April 12, slamming into the BJ Medical College hostel and aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, was en route to London's Gatwick Airport when the tragedy occurred. Buildings and water remit cut, PWD has only roadworks now
Panaji: State govt recently carved out a drinking water department (DWD) from the public works department (PWD). Now, the state has issued an order handing the responsibility of the buildings division of the PWD entirely to the principal secretary of the department. With drinking water and buildings sections' functioning fully separated, the PWD has been for the first time left to deal with only roads and bridges. The order was issued this month to refer all files relating to the buildings division directly to the secretary or the principal secretary of the PWD for scrutiny or clearance. It was felt by govt that this will ensure timely and effective execution of maintenance works of govt buildings. The order states that the principal chief engineer of the PWD will now handle files only pertaining to roads (including bridges), besides operating as the department head for all administrative purposes. 'The decision was taken to fast-track the processing of files as maintenance works are urgently needed due to risk during monsoons to govt buildings, many of which are old,' said a source. 'Staffers are worried that allotting them to a different department may affect their prospects for promotion etc, as there is no clarity on these aspects yet,' a source said. 'It can affect staff motivation. They do not know where they stand in the hierarchy after the restructuring.' The source added, 'The DWD and the PWD will bifurcate fully eventually and a separate budget allotment for the DWD has been announced in the budget. However, revenue distribution between the departments also needs to be sorted out.' Officials said that with a budget of over Rs 800 crore for the DWD, it is yet to get a separate budget head for accounting purposes. Also, clarity is needed to be established on administrative rules in tune with general finance rules to avoid chaos, the source said.
