Cubs Trade Idea Opens up Money for Kyle Tucker Extension
Kyle Tucker is going to demand an astronomical price this offseason. The Chicago Cubs star outfielder has come back down to earth lately, but is still putting together another all-star campaign with a .262 batting average, a .892 OPS, a 153 OPS+, and 10 home runs.
The Cubs are in first place in the National League Central at 25-18, but shipping some of their more expensive contracts could be necessary to preserve Tucker.

Brendan Kuty of The Athletic threw out Nico Hoerner as a potential target for the New York Yankees.
While Chicago does not need to trade Hoerner by any means, here is what a deal could look like and why it would benefit them:
Cubs receive: OF Everson Pereira (No. 12), INF Jorbit Vivas (No. 19).
Yankees receive: 2B Nico Hoerner.

With Jazz Chisholm Jr. out for the short term and Oswaldo Cabrera out for the long term, New York needs infield support. Shipping Vivas would strain their depth, but with D.J. LeMahieu activated, the Yankees are in a position to deal prospects for MLB support.
Hoerner could play second, and once Chisholm is healthy, he could return to third base (where he surprisingly excelled last season). LeMahieu, who has been hampered by injuries in his older days, would slot in nicely as a depth infielder who can fill in for off days.

Shipping Hoerner would likely ruffle some feathers amongst Cubs fans, but he is also owed $23.5 million over the next two seasons, and that money could be valuable for the Tucker fund.
This would be a step in the other direction for a team and a President in Jed Hoyer that has been insistent on win-now moves (the Tucker trade, the Matt Shaw demotion). However, Hoerner's slow start at the plate (.281 batting average, .668 OPS, 92 OPS+) makes him as expendable as ever.
Pereira is a tantalizing prospect who could eventually garner a Chicago outfield spot with so much uncertainty moving forward. Ian Happ is a free agent in 2027, Pete Crow-Armstrong is due for a massive deal, and, of course, the unknown status of Tucker beyond this year.
It may seem ludicrous, but this league has also taught us to expect the unexpected.

NBA Legend Derrick Rose Makes Personal Announcement
NBA Legend Derrick Rose Makes Personal Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Chicago Bulls legend Derrick Rose recently retired after 15 seasons in the NBA. Selected No. 1 overall by Chicago in the 2008 NBA draft, Rose quickly ascended to superstardom with the Bulls. Becoming the youngest league MVP in 2011, Rose helped lead Chicago to a 62-20 record before losing in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Miami Heat. Advertisement Injuries unfortunately altered Rose's career trajectory, as he appeared in just 723 total games across his 16 years in the league (including 2012-13 when he missed the entire year). Finishing his career with the Memphis Grizzlies, Rose returned to where he played his collegiate basketball. Spending one season in Memphis (2023-24), Rose appeared in just 24 games. While he showed flashes of ability, averaging 8.0 points in just 16.6 minutes per contest, he was unable to stay healthy and ultimately called it a career after that season. On Thursday, the three-time All-Star made an announcement on his latest personal venture. Advertisement In a post on Instagram, Rose announced he has launched a "knockout-style chess tournament" that features current and former NBA stars. "Introducing Chesstival - a knockout-style chess tournament featuring NBA stars past and present, founded by former NBA MVP Derrick Rose and Freestyle Chess," Rose wrote in a joint post with Freestyle Chess. "Thanks to a partnership with $50,000 in total prize money will be donated to the charity of the winner's choice." This news was first announced in an Instagram post earlier this week, but the details of Rose's involvement were not as clear. Thursday's post from Rose included a reel of him playing basketball and chess, along with the official details of this tournament. The post has accumulated over 4,300 likes and several comments, including one from Adidas Basketball, who Rose remains affiliated with. Advertisement While he is no longer in the NBA, Rose is using his platform to bring different stars together for this initiative that plans to donate at least $50,000 to charity. Mets Send Clear 3-Word Message After David Peterson's Incredible Night
Mets Send Clear 3-Word Message After David Peterson's Incredible Night originally appeared on Athlon Sports. If you still have any lingering doubts about the 2025 New York Mets, players like David Peterson are ready and willing to make you reconsider. Advertisement Peterson continued his strong season Wednesday night with a six-strikeout, no-walk shutout of the Washington Nationals. It marked a career night for Peterson, who had never recorded a shutout, much less pitched into the ninth inning. Peterson lowered his ERA to 2.49, the fourth-best among National League starters. 'David Peterson = DAWG 😤,' the Mets' official X/Twitter account posted. Anyone who has watched Peterson this year likely agrees with their assessment. Peterson has quietly recorded 2.0 bWAR and a 71-25 K-BB ratio in 79 2/3 innings for the first-place Mets. Peterson became only the seventh pitcher to record a complete game shutout. Advertisement 'You dream of doing stuff like this,' Peterson told reporters. 'We try and go as deep as we can in the game,' he continued. 'To be able to go all nine was something very special.' New York Mets starting pitcher David PetersonVincent Carchietta-Imagn Images Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said he told Peterson, who entered the ninth inning having thrown 97 pitches, that the starter could only throw eight or nine more pitches. Indeed, Peterson needed nine pitches to retire the Nationals' final three hitters. Peterson recorded the Mets' first shutout by a left-handed pitcher since Steven Matz in 2019. 'I definitely felt like I had a boost, obviously knowing it's the ninth and I was somewhat on a pitch count,' Peterson said. 'At that point, I was just trying to empty the tank and give it everything I had left.'
