Cubs Trade Idea Opens up Money for Kyle Tucker Extension

Yahoo14-05-2025

Kyle Tucker is going to demand an astronomical price this offseason. The Chicago Cubs star outfielder has come back down to earth lately, but is still putting together another all-star campaign with a .262 batting average, a .892 OPS, a 153 OPS+, and 10 home runs.
The Cubs are in first place in the National League Central at 25-18, but shipping some of their more expensive contracts could be necessary to preserve Tucker.

Brendan Kuty of The Athletic threw out Nico Hoerner as a potential target for the New York Yankees.
While Chicago does not need to trade Hoerner by any means, here is what a deal could look like and why it would benefit them:
Cubs receive: OF Everson Pereira (No. 12), INF Jorbit Vivas (No. 19).
Yankees receive: 2B Nico Hoerner.

With Jazz Chisholm Jr. out for the short term and Oswaldo Cabrera out for the long term, New York needs infield support. Shipping Vivas would strain their depth, but with D.J. LeMahieu activated, the Yankees are in a position to deal prospects for MLB support.
Hoerner could play second, and once Chisholm is healthy, he could return to third base (where he surprisingly excelled last season). LeMahieu, who has been hampered by injuries in his older days, would slot in nicely as a depth infielder who can fill in for off days.

Shipping Hoerner would likely ruffle some feathers amongst Cubs fans, but he is also owed $23.5 million over the next two seasons, and that money could be valuable for the Tucker fund.
This would be a step in the other direction for a team and a President in Jed Hoyer that has been insistent on win-now moves (the Tucker trade, the Matt Shaw demotion). However, Hoerner's slow start at the plate (.281 batting average, .668 OPS, 92 OPS+) makes him as expendable as ever.
Pereira is a tantalizing prospect who could eventually garner a Chicago outfield spot with so much uncertainty moving forward. Ian Happ is a free agent in 2027, Pete Crow-Armstrong is due for a massive deal, and, of course, the unknown status of Tucker beyond this year.
It may seem ludicrous, but this league has also taught us to expect the unexpected.

Angel Reese Gives Nickname to Coco Gauff After Chicago Sky's Blowout Loss

Angel Reese Gives Nickname to Coco Gauff After Chicago Sky's Blowout Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky may have taken a hard hit on the scoreboard Tuesday night, but forward Angel Reese still found a way to shine. Advertisement After the Sky's 85-66 loss to the undefeated New York Liberty, Reese shared a heartfelt moment with tennis star Coco Gauff. Gauff, fresh off winning her second Grand Slam title at the French Open, was sitting courtside at the Barclays Center. She was seen enjoying the game with Vanessa Bryant and her daughters, making it a special night for sports fans. During a timeout, cameras zoomed in on Gauff and the crowd erupted with cheers. She was also greeted by Ellie the Elephant, the Liberty's mascot, and visited the Liberty locker room after the game. But the real crossover moment happened after the final buzzer. Reese posted a video on Instagram Story showing her meeting with Gauff. 'The QUEEN,' Reese added a caption, tagging Gauff directly. Advertisement Despite the tough loss, Reese appeared unfazed. In fact, she seemed more excited to meet Gauff than discouraged by the outcome of the game. Her warm gesture came shortly after the tennis champion was honored with loud cheers by Liberty fans. Meanwhile, Reese recorded her 30th career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, making her the fastest player in WNBA history to reach that mark. At only 21 years old, she became the youngest American woman since Serena Williams in 2002 to win the French Open. Advertisement It was her second Grand Slam title after winning the 2023 US Open. Following the match, fans gave her a new nickname: 'Queen of Clay.' Now, Reese has added her own spin to that crown. The Chicago Sky will try to bounce back on Friday when they face the Atlanta Dream. But even in defeat, Angel Reese made headlines not just for her stats, but for her shoutout to a fellow queen in sports. ESPN Predicts Indiana Fever to Beat Angel Reese's Chicago Sky Even Without Caitlin Clark

ESPN Predicts Indiana Fever to Beat Angel Reese's Chicago Sky Even Without Caitlin Clark originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever have now lost three straight games, with their last two coming amid the absence of Caitlin Clark. Advertisement Clark is currently dealing with a left quadriceps strain and is expected to be out for a minimum of two weeks. It has been a week now since her injury was announced, and she's set to be re-evaluated on June 9. Indiana is set to face Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky on Saturday, so the team will still be without its best player by then. Despite that, and the fact that the Fever have yet to win a game without the WNBA All-Star, ESPN still favors Indiana to beat the Sky when they meet. According to the ESPN Matchup Predictor, the Fever have a 57.6 percent chance to win the game, while the Sky are at 42.4 percent. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) talks to a referee against the Atlanta Davis-Imagn Images For what it's worth, the ESPN computer also had the Fever taking down the Washington Mystics in their first game without Caitlin Clark. However, Indiana ended up losing the contest, 83-77. Advertisement That being said, the Fever can't be complacent against the Sky when they meet this week. Besides, Angel Reese and company have won two straight games (both against the Dallas Wings) and appear to be finding their rhythm. Not to mention that the Fever are dealing with other injuries to both Sydney Colson and Sophie Cunningham, making their guard lineup extremely thin. It should also be noted that the Sky will have plenty of rest in their meeting with the Fever, since it's their only game of the week. Meanwhile, Indiana plays on Tuesday against the Mystics before traveling to Chicago.
