'Open Arms for Canada' discount offered to Canadian tourists in Seattle this weekend

Yahoo09-05-2025

The Brief
Canadian tourists vising Seattle for the Toronto Blue Jays series will get a roughly a 30% discount at select restaurants and businesses this weekend.
It's part of the "Open Arms for Canada" campaign, an effort to bring in more Canadian tourists.
SEATTLE - Dozens of Seattle restaurants, attractions and hotels are taking part in the Open Arms for Canada campaign to bring in more Canadian tourists.
What they're saying
"We're approaching 40 businesses and organizations that will accept Canadian currency at par, roughly a 30% discount, if they come to Seattle and show us a [Canadian] driver's license or passport," said Bob Donegan, President and CEO of Ivar's.
Ivar's is among the businesses joining the campaign, which runs through this weekend as the Toronto Blue Jays take on the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park, an event that typically pulls in a lot more Canadian fans to the Emerald City.
"Canadian visitors are our single biggest source of international travelers to Seattle," said Donegan. "They take over the waterfront and all of downtown with their Blue Jays caps and gear, and we're not seeing them this year."
The Open Arms for Canada campaign is in response to the drop in Canadians coming to Washington through border crossings, ferry sailings and air travel.
"Border crossings are down 50%, air travel to Seattle is down 70% from Canada," said David Meinert, owner of Mecca Cafe in lower Queen Anne.
Meinert's restaurants are part of the campaign to not only serve more Canadian customers but as an act of goodwill.
"We feel bad that there's been so much tension between the U.S. and Canada," said Meinert. "In this Washington, we like Canada, we respect them, and we want them here."
Bob Donegan tells Fox 13 that participating organizations will get together next week to assess how many tourists took advantage of this discount and that there could be similar Open Arms for Canada campaigns in the future.

Trans Mountain Eyes Pipeline Capacity Increase by Early 2027

The Trans Mountain pipeline could handle an additional 75,000 barrels of crude a day by a early 2027, the government-owned company's top executive said, potentially helping Canadian oil producers expand shipments to non-US markets. Chemicals that make crude flow more easily through the line could be used in less than two years as a first stage of the capacity increase, Trans Mountain CEO Mark Maki told reporters at a conference in Calgary. After that, increased pumping power could boost flows to about 1.14 million barrels a day, but that would require dredging the nearby waterway to allow tankers to carry more oil.

Starbucks crowns first-ever global barista champion

LAS VEGAS — Starbucks crowned its first global barista champion Wednesday in a competition that tested coffee knowledge, technical skills and customer connection. The big picture: The three-day competition held in Las Vegas featured 12 baristas from around the world, narrowed down from over 84,000. The final round took place before an audience of more than 14,000 Starbucks store managers and employees during the Seattle-based company's Leadership Experience event in Las Vegas. Zoom in: The winner was Nobuki from Japan, who now has the chance to create a beverage that will go into Starbucks across the U.S. (Full names for the winner and finalists were withheld by Starbucks for privacy.) Baristas were tested on latte art, presenting their signature beverage while also connecting with the judges with storytelling. "The first step is sparkling smile," Nobuki said during the competition on how to make a latte. "Yes, I'm serious. When we smile, everything tastes so much better." For latte art, Nobuki made a rosetta design and then a tulip. His signature drink was the Blooming Yuzu Espresso, which he uses a Japanese sauce to make. Between the lines: One finalist represented Europe, Middle East and Africa, another represented the Tokyo Reserve Roastery and the last represented the Shanghai Reserve Roastery in China.
