Man jailed after shooting partner through garage ceiling in Sydney's south-west
A man will spend up to seven years in prison for shooting a gun through the ceiling of his Sydney garage and causing catastrophic injuries to his partner, who a court heard has forgiven him and now wants his support.
Kamal El Jamal fired a bullet through a garage roof of a Condell Park home on January 12, 2023, which seriously injured his partner who was 37 years old at the time.
El Jamal, now 35, has been given a maximum prison sentence of seven years with a minimum of four years and three months.
The bullet, fired by the then 32-year-old, pierced through the garage ceiling, past the floorboards of the bedroom directly above, through the mattress and was lodged into his partner who was laying on the bed.
El Jamal drove his partner to Bankstown Hospital shortly after.
She suffered serious injuries to her chest, ribs, spine, and liver — causing paralysis below her spine.
The NSW District Court heard on Friday she will never walk again.
At the time of the incident, El Jamal claimed to paramedics that he "just found her like this", before he left her at the hospital and drove away.
The firearm was never recovered by police.
At the sentence hearing on Friday, the court heard that El Jamal has been caring for his partner, who has since forgiven him for causing her paralysis.
Defence counsel April Francis said the woman, who needs assistance with daily activities like bathing and clothing, "is desirous of having the offender assist her with the state that she finds herself in".
However, District Judge Sean Grant said El Jamal "should not benefit from the injuries he has occasioned."
In a letter written to the court, El Jamal aimed to show remorse for his actions.
The 35-year-old stated he was suffering "intense psychosis", and was "seeing and hearing things", which Judge Grant rejected as there was no evidence for these episodes.
Judge Grant said if the firearm was volunteered to police after the incident occurred, it would be a sign of remorse.
"A message needs to be sent to the community that if you possess and use a firearm you will be sent to jail for a long time.
El Jamal had spent time in two rehabilitation centres since the incident, which Judge Grant considered during sentencing.
He also said his criminal history, which included several drug matters and the contravention of an apprehended domestic violence order, disentitled him to leniency.
Judge Grant said El Jamal had attempted to rehabilitate himself, but was "unable to conclude he will not be before a court again".
He will be eligible for parole from April 19, 2028.

Stewards set to resume inquiry into altercation between jockeys Noel Callow and Kyle Wilson-Taylor during Stradbroke week
The stewards inquiry into a physical altercation between two Queensland jockeys is likely to be resumed in Stradbroke Handicap week. Group 1 winner Noel Callow has been sidelined under concussion protocols after being involved in the altercation with fellow Group 1-winning jockey Kyle Wilson-Taylor in a dramatic incident at the midweek Doomben races on May 28. A stewards inquiry kicked off on the day but was unable to take evidence from Callow who had left the course to seek medical attention. Wilson-Taylor insisted he had not been the initial aggressor. Senior steward Geoff Goold confirmed to Racenet that it was the intention to reconvene the stewards' inquiry on Tuesday at Doomben. Meanwhile, young jockey George Rooke was suspended for 14 days for careless riding after an incident in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Rookie, a British-born jockey who has called New Zealand home for several months, was riding Kiwi filly She's A Dealer in the Oaks. She's A Dealer finished fifth behind Oaks winner You Wahng but caused interference to Real Class (Andrew Mallyon) passing the 350m. Meanwhile, Victorian jockey Jamie Mott was suspended for 11 days for careless riding as stewards reconvened an inquiry into an incident in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 on May 17.

Police release image after hit-run in West Melbourne left pedestrian with two broken legs
Police are appealing for assistance after a Chinese national on holiday in Melbourne was struck in an alleged hit-run and left with two broken legs. Emergency services responded to reports of a blue Subaru Liberty hitting a male pedestrian near the intersection of King and Batman streets in West Melbourne about 10pm on Wednesday, May 28. Melbourne Highway Patrol Senior Constable Mitchell McWilliam said the vehicle had been travelling north along King Street, when it hit a man who had been crossing the road from a median strip. He said CCTV footage showed the driver of the Subaru briefly applied the brakes, before taking off. "The driver has not stopped at all, not provided any assistance and continued north on King Street out of the city, leaving the scene of the accident and leaving that person on the side of the road," Senior Constable McWilliam said. He said the 30-year-old man had sustained two broken legs, and remains in hospital after undergoing surgery. "[The pedestrian] is over from China, visiting some family he's got living here," he said. "He was planning on spending a couple of weeks in Australia and visiting family and having a good time, and as a result of this now he's stuck in hospital with some pretty life-changing injuries." Police have released CCTV footage and an image of the car believed to be involved, in the hope of tracking down the driver to get their version of events. "The person that's done this knows that they've done this and I'd like to have them have a really hard think about what type of person that makes them to leave someone for dead in the gutter — it's pretty low," Senior Constable McWilliam said. Anyone with information or dashcam footage should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via

French woman allegedly concealed 10kg of meth in suitcase
A young French woman allegedly concealed 10kg of methamphetamine in her suitcase on a flight from Paris to Perth. The 18-year-old was travelling from Paris when Australian Border Force officers selected her for a baggage examination at Perth Airport. A white crystalline substance was allegedly found in five sealed plastic pouches inside her suitcase. The substance tested positive for methamphetamine during initial testing, with an estimated weight of 10.7kg. Her phone, suitcase and its contents were seized by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), with police to allege she'd planned to travel to Sydney. She was charged with one count of importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, of which there is a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. AFP Inspector Matt Taylor said 'criminal activities are not welcome in this country'. 'The AFP's aim is to disrupt all levels of the drug trade and the criminals attempting to profit at the expense and suffering of the Australian community,' Inspector Taylor said. 'Even in small amounts, drugs such as methamphetamine cause immense harm to users and the community around them, through the impact on the health care system and associated crime. 'Our message is simple to anyone involved in the drug trade – your criminal activities are not welcome in this country.' The young woman fronted Northbridge Magistrates court on April 26 where she was remanded to reappear on Friday.
