Mets OF/DH Jesse Winker (oblique) expected to be out 6-8 weeks

Reuters06-05-2025

May 6 - New York Mets outfielder/designated hitter Jesse Winker will be out six to eight weeks because of a right oblique strain, manager Carlos Mendoza said on Monday.
The Mets placed Winker on the 10-day injured list. In a corresponding move, the team recalled second baseman Brett Baty from Triple-A Syracuse.
Winker, who hits from the left side as part of a designated hitter platoon with righty Starling Marte, was starting in the outfield for the first time this season when he was injured in the third inning on Sunday in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the host St. Louis Cardinals.
He caught Nolan Gorman's sacrifice fly in shallow left and tried to throw out the runner at home plate.
"I felt it pretty much right when I threw the ball," Winker, 31, said after the game. "I'm going to wait till those tests and figure it out from there."
He had an MRI on Sunday in St. Louis, and follow-up tests in New York revealed the strain.
"We didn't get good news," Mendoza said. "He's looking at a Grade 2 oblique strain, and they're telling us it's probably six to eight weeks before he's a player for us at the big-league level. Obliques are tricky, but we'll figure it out."
Winker is batting .239 (16-for-67) with one home run and 10 RBIs in 24 games in his first full season with the Mets. New York obtained Winker in a July 28, 2024, trade with the Washington Nationals, then signed him back as a free agent in January.
An All-Star with the Cincinnati Reds in 2021, Winker is a career .262 hitter with 96 homers and 334 RBIs in 779 games over nine years with the Reds (2017-21), Seattle Mariners (2022), Milwaukee Brewers (2023), Nationals (2024) and Mets.
The Reds selected Winker in the first round (49th overall) of the 2012 MLB Draft.
Baty, 25, was batting .204 (11-for-54) with one homer and four RBIs in 19 games this season for the Mets. He is a career .214 hitter with 16 homers and 59 RBIs in 188 games since making his major league debut in 2022.
New York selected Baty 12th overall in the 2019 draft.
In other moves on Monday, the Mets optioned right-handers Blade Tidwell and Austin Warren to Syracuse.
Tidwell, 23, made his major league debut on Sunday, starting Game 1 of the doubleheader at St. Louis and taking the loss in a 6-5 setback. Tidwell allowed six runs, nine hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.
The Mets picked Tidwell in the second round of the 2022 draft.
Warren, 29, has pitched one inning for the Mets this season and has one walk and one strikeout. He was serving as the 27th player on the roster.

Rays storm back in 6-run 6th, halt Mets' win streak

June 14 - Danny Jansen's two-run homer capped a six-run sixth inning Friday night as the Tampa Bay Rays handed the New York Mets a rare home loss with a 7-5 decision in the opener of a three-game set. Jansen's sixth homer of the year scored Kameron Misner and made a winner of former New York pitcher Eric Orze (1-0), who earned his first MLB win with an inning of scoreless relief. Four other Rays relievers made it through the final four innings, with Pete Fairbanks pitching the ninth for his 13th save in 15 chances. Fairbanks stranded men at the corners, slipping a called third strike by Ronny Mauricio to end it. Max Kranick (3-2), making his first appearance for the Mets after being recalled from Triple-A Syracuse earlier Friday, was tagged with the loss. It was just New York's eighth defeat in 35 games at Citi Field this year and snapped its six-game winning streak. Singles by Brandon Lowe, Yandy Diaz and Jonathan Aranda off Paul Blackburn started the uprising in the sixth. After Junior Caminero popped up, Jake Mangum stroked a two-run single to center and Jose Caballero grounded out to score Aranda. Misner poked a game-tying single to left and stole second before Jansen's blast. Neither starter was involved in the decision. Tampa Bay's Taj Bradley lasted four-plus innings, yielding four hits and five unearned runs with four walks and five strikeouts. New York's Clay Holmes left with a 5-1 lead after allowing three hits and a run in five innings, walking two and whiffing three. Holmes coughed up a solo homer to Aranda, his eighth of the year, to start the fourth. But the Mets quickly wiped out the lead thanks to some clutch hitting from Starling Marte and some shaky Rays defense. Bradley's error set the stage for a two-run New York fourth that featured Marte lashing an RBI infield single off Bradley's leg to tie it. Tyrone Taylor reached on a fielder's choice to score the tiebreaking run. Two walks sandwiched around Aranda's error at first teed up the Mets in the fifth. Juan Soto drew a bases-filled walk to knock in a run, followed by Marte's two-out, two-run single to left-center. --Field Level Media

Gleyber Torres, Riley Greene slug Tigers past Reds

June 14 - Riley Greene homered and drove in four runs, Gleyber Torres blasted a pair of solo homers and the host Detroit Tigers rolled past the Cincinnati Reds, 11-5, on Friday. Torres drove in three runs while Javier Baez had three hits, including a homer, scored three runs and drove in two more. Jake Rogers added two hits and drove in two runs. Keider Montero (3-1) gave up two runs in five innings to pick up the win. TJ Friedl and Elly Da La Cruz homered for Cincinnati. De La Cruz and Tyler Stephenson each had three hits and two RBIs. Nick Martinez (4-7) gave up four runs in five innings in the loss. Torres, leading off the bottom of the first, ambushed the first pitch he saw from Martinez, smacking a fastball over the left field wall. Detroit left two runners stranded in the second. Friedl then led off the third by ripping a hanging Montero slider over the right field wall. With two out in the third, Greene crushed a Martinez fastball over the visitors' bullpen in left-center field to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. The Reds squandered an opportunity in the fourth. Singles by Spencer Steer, Connor Joe and Matt McLain loaded the bases with two out. Friedl popped up a 2-2 fastball from Montero to leave them stranded. Baez gave Detroit some breathing room in the bottom of the inning when he lofted a Martinez changeup that bounced off the top of the left field wall and into the stands. De La Cruz made it 3-2 in the fifth when he pounded a knuckle curve over the right field wall. The Tigers pushed across four runs in the sixth for a 7-2 advantage. Walks to Baez and Rogers, sandwiching a Zach McKinstry single, loaded the bases with no outs. Torres hit a sacrifice fly to score Baez. Jahmai Jones reached on an infield single to load the bases again and Greene cleared them with a line drive double to left. Torres' second homer of the game came against Ian Gibaut in the seventh. Rogers had two RBIs in a three-run eighth. --Field Level Media

Parky influence hailed by Wrexham executive director Ker

Parkinson was appointed by co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as the Reds' manager in July 2021 and in his four years at the helm, he has led Wrexham to three promotions. Speaking to Gabby Logan and Mark Chapman on The Sports Agents podcast, Wrexham executive director Ker said: 'He's been extraordinary and I think, again, people point to our success and there's, obviously, lots of debate about 'oh, have you thrown a lot of money? Have you done this, that and the other?'. 'I think the single greatest thing we did was hire Phil and say you're in charge. 'It's quite an old-fashioned way of doing things. We don't have a director of football. 'We don't have a head of data, a head of scouting, a head of this, that and the other. You're the manager. You're in charge.' The Wrexham story is now a prominent one around the world, thanks to the success of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary. Currently screening its fourth season, a further year has been commissioned when Wrexham take their place in the Championship, with viewers and fans being taken for more fly-on-the-wall peaks inside the changing room. While viewers have got used to these behind-the-scenes views, Ker says that Parkinson also has his say on what is filmed for the documentary. He added: 'He has complete carte blanche to turn them (cameras) away. 'But, also, he's come to understand, you know, I think at the start he was probably a little bit reluctant and you've seen the documentary. 'He has a long conversation with Rob, where I think Rob did impress upon him, you know, this is not like Sunderland 'Til I Die, because, actually, we control the cameras. 'So, you're not going to be made to look like a wally. You're not going to get egg on your face. 'We're not going to be intruding... and it's become this extraordinary situation where I think the relationship between Rob and Ryan and Phil, and our players, and dare I say myself and Rob and Ryan, and the players and Phil, we're all so, so close. 'It's a very stable environment. It's very rare, I think, for a manager to operate with as little peril as Phil has done over the last four years. 'There's, like, no point when we've had bad runs, where there's been anything approaching pressure.'
