OPEN// Egypt recovers 11 smuggled artifacts via cooperation with the US
CAIRO, June 4 (MENA) – Egypt's Consulate General in New York has recovered a collection of 11 Egyptian artifacts thanks to close cooperation with the New York County District Attorney's Office, US law enforcement authorities, the foreign ministry's cultural sector, and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates on Wednesday.
The move comes as part of the Egyptian State's continued efforts to preserve its cultural heritage and recover smuggled Egyptian artifacts, the ministry said in a statement.
The restored artifacts comprise a remarkable collection of historically significant antiquities that were smuggled out of Egypt in recent years. US authorities traced and seized them in preparation for their repatriation to Egypt, it added.
The collection includes a vessel of the god Bes, dating back to the Late Period of ancient Egypt (circa 600 B.C.), a pendant in the shape of the head of Horus dating approximately between 300-700 B.C., and the head of a Roman-era statue dating between the 1st and 4th centuries. (MENA)

These pieces, dating back to various eras of ancient Egyptian civilization, were recovered as part of Egypt's tireless efforts to protect its cultural heritage and safeguard antiquities smuggled from the country. The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mohamed Ismail Khaled, clarified that the recovery operation followed criminal investigations conducted by the relevant US authorities, which confirmed the artifacts had been illegally taken from Egypt. Based on these findings, the Consul General of the Arab Republic of Egypt in New York formally received the pieces. The Director General of the Repatriated Antiquities Department and supervisor of the Central Department of Archaeological Ports, Shaaban Abdel Gawad, explained that the recovered collection includes several items of significant historical and artistic value.
