No. 11 Auburn tops Samford ahead of weekend showdown with Tennessee Auburn gained much-needed momentum by taking down Samford at the Hoover Met on Tuesday.
The No. 11 Auburn Tigers will face No. 6 Tennessee on the road this weekend in what will be a critical series in SEC play, and gained much-needed momentum ahead of the series by taking out in-state rival Samford at the Hoover Met on Tuesday, 3-0.
The Tigers' offense set the tone early with a two-run home run by Cade Belyeu in the 1st inning and a costly Samford error in the 7th inning that scored Chris Rembert. However, the performance of the night went to Christian Chatterton, who turned in another stellar outing in midweek action.
The true freshman shut out Samford over six complete innings, allowing one hit and striking out 10 batters. His performance in Hoover follows his previous outing, where he struck out six batters and allowed zero hits in four innings last Tuesday against Georgia Tech at Plainsman Park. Auburn head coach Butch Thompson is impressed with what he has seen from his midweek starter over recent weeks.
'(Chatterton) just picked up where he left off a week later,' Thompson said postgame. 'He's done that three or four times in a row now. The changeup, the conviction with everything. When he needed a pitch, he could get that changeup over every time. It's just not recognizable right now. That pitch is set as good as any pitch for any pitcher on our pitching staff.'
Although it did not show on the scoreboard, Auburn's offense dominated Samford on Tuesday. The Tigers outhit Samford, 8-2, with Cooper McMurray, Bub Terrell, and reigning SEC Player of the Week Chris Rembert collecting two hits each. Chase Fralick joined Terrell and Belyeu by logging a multi-base hit in the win.
Outside of Chatterton, Andreas Alvarez and Ryan Hetzler continued the shutout over the final three innings. Alvarez allowed a hit and a walk while striking out three batters in two innings of relief, while Hetzler slammed the door in the 9th inning by retiring every batter he faced and earning the save.
Auburn will now focus on its weekend showdown with No. 6 Tennessee, which begins Friday at 6 p.m. CT at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Highly-rated Oregon OL target announces commitment days before visit to Ducks The Oregon Ducks are preparing for the start of an incredibly busy recruiting month this weekend, with a ton of high-profile official visits on tap over the next several weeks. Unfortunately for Dan Lanning and Co., one of the top visits that they had scheduled is now in doubt. On Tuesday morning, it was announced that 4-star IOL Tommy Tofi, the No. 97 player in the class and No. 6 IOL, would be committing to the California Golden Bears. Tofi, who stands at 6-foot-6, 330 pounds, was scheduled to take his official visit to Oregon this weekend, but that trip is now in question coming off of his commitment to Justin Wilcox and the Golden Bears. Tofi is a San Francisco kid who has been near the top of Oregon's recruiting board for a long time and a big target in the offensive line room. He is coming off of an official visit to California last weekend, so the timing is understandable for him to make his commitment from that perspective, but he did have OVs scheduled to Oregon this weekend, followed by trips to Tennessee and BYU. While he is verbally committed at the moment, it would come as no surprise to see A'lique Terry and his team continue to push in his recruitment and try to flip him to the Ducks before signing day takes place in December. Former MSU football linebacker returns from major injury for the Philadelphia Eagles Ben VanSumeren made waves in his collegiate career transferring from Michigan to Michigan State, and although his collegiate career did not go as expected, VanSumeren has still found himself playing at the next level. After going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft, VanSumeren was picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles, where he has spent the first two years of his career. In those two years he has played in 20 games, making two starts, and recording 16 tackles. Midway through the 2024 year, VanSumeren was making the transition from defense to offense, lining up as a fullback in Nick Sirianni's offense. Unfortunately, a torn ACL in November took away the rest of VanSumeren's season, and he was forced to watch the Eagles win the Super Bowl from the sidelines. Now, after a long road of recovering, VanSumeren is back and is gearing up for his full-time return to the field in 2025, participating in the team's offseason training activities. Look for the former Spartan to do big things in his return on the offensive side of the field in his professional career.
