All set for Naidu to move into his humble abode today
Tirupati: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will finally have a house of his own in Kuppam, the constituency he has been representing since 1989. On Sunday, Naidu and his family members are scheduled to take part in the housewarming ceremony of their newly constructed residence near Sivapuram in Santhipuram Mandal, along the Kuppam-Palamaner national highway.
Despite his long political association with the constituency, Naidu had until now relied on the Roads and Buildings (R-&B) guest house or his specially designed bus for accommodation during his visits. However, following the 2019 Assembly elections and civic polls, criticism mounted from then ruling YSRCP leaders over the absence of a permanent residence in the area.
In response, Naidu decided to establish a deeper connection with his electorate and purchased two acres of land for the construction of a residence. A Bhumi Puja was performed in 2022, with his wife Bhuvaneswari joining him for the ceremony. While the project initially faced delays over construction approvals, local TDP leaders eventually cleared the necessary permissions. At one point, Naidu publicly accused former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy of obstructing the process and warned of political consequences.
Sources indicate that Bhuvaneswari played a key role in overseeing the construction, offering inputs at various stages. The house, aside from being a family residence, is also equipped to host party meetings and other political gatherings.
The housewarming ceremony is scheduled for 10 am on Sunday. Following the ceremony, the family will stay overnight at the new residence, adhering to traditional customs, before returning on Monday.
Digital invitations were sent out via social media on Friday to party cadres and constituents. Preparations are in full swing, with lunch arrangements for around 20,000 people. Separate tents have been set up to serve food for VVIPs, VIPs, and the general public.
Chittoor District Collector Sumit Kumar and SP VN Manikanta Chandolu, along with MLC and government whip K Srikanth and APSRTC Vice Chairman PS Munirathnam, supervised the arrangements. Officials reviewed the helipad setup, route map, and overall security and crowd management to ensure a smooth event.

TDP, YSRCP activists clash during Jagan's Podili visit
Vijayawada: Tension prevailed as TDP and YSRCP activists clashed and pelted stones at each other during former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's visit to the tobacco auction platform in Podili on Wednesday. The confrontation resulted in injuries to at least three police constables and two women. Additional police forces were deployed to the town to restore order. The disturbance began when TDP women activists protested against Jagan's visit by hoisting black balloons and displaying placards. They vocally opposed Jagan, demanding an apology for the recent controversy over comments on Amaravati women on a TV channel. YSRCP activists countered the protest with their own slogans and attempted to disperse the TDP activists. The situation escalated when TDP members hurled stones and chappals at Jagan's convoy, prompting retaliatory action from YSRCP supporters. Police had a tough time in managing the warring groups. Condemned the incident, HRD minister Nara Lokesh warned that the govt would not tolerate assaults on women. "Women held the protest in a peaceful manner, and it is a shame that YSRCP chief Jagan encouraged his party members to attack women. We will not spare anyone who attacked women," he said. In response, YSRCP spokesperson and former minister Ambati Rambabu accused Lokesh of instigating the protests. "This is a deliberate ploy to generate law and order trouble. The ruling party encouraged similar protests during Jagan's recent visit to Tenali," Ambati stated. YSRCP women's wing president and MLC Varadu Kalyani too slammed TDP for "exploiting" women in what she termed "shameful diversion politics". "It is disgraceful that chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is stooping to such low tactics, using women to shield his administration's incompetence," she alleged, while claiming that unable to tolerate Jagan's connection with the masses, Naidu and Lokesh are resorting to "cheap diversion tactics". Later, during his interaction with tobacco farmers, Jagan criticised the govt for neglecting them and pushing them into severe distress. He attributed the rise in tobacco farmers' suicides over the past two months to the state govt's inaction and demanded that the govt assign Markfed as a buyer to ensure fair pricing. Highlighting the drastic fall in tobacco prices compared to previous year, he noted that prices have plummeted from Rs 360 per kg during the YSRCP regime to Rs 240 per kg for graded varieties in the current season.

Andhra Pradesh energy minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar orders inquiry into smart meter billing complaints
Vijayawada: Energy minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar has ordered a field-level inquiry into the performance of smart meters following complaints that electricity bills increased after their installation in industrial and commercial establishments. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Responding to concerns raised by power consumers, the minister instructed officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the meters' functioning and to verify whether the billing hike was genuine or resulted from technical or procedural issues, and submit a detailed report. Ravi Kumar said the govt received feedback that electricity bills were rising after the installation of smart meters. "I have instructed officials to identify the reasons behind this. The functioning of smart meters is being closely examined, and I want to assure everyone that no consumer will be burdened even by a single rupee unnecessarily," he said. Sources said that the discoms were yet to submit the report to the minister as they have decided to put the newly procured meters on testing mode to ascertain the technical glitches. TDP, which strongly opposed the installation of smart meters while in opposition, seems to have quietly adapted to the YSRCP regime's decision. The govt has asked the discoms to proceed with the installation of smart meters in two phases. In the first phase, industrial units and commercial establishments will have their old RF meters replaced with smart meters, while household points will be covered in the second phase. Consumers would be burdened as they will have to bear the cost of the smart meters and their maintenance costs. Although the discoms will collect the costs in instalments, the cost of each smart meter is expected to be around Rs 8,000 for single-phase meters and Rs 17,000 for three-phase users. The smart meters' price in the open market ranges between Rs 3,000 and Rs 3,500.

Naidu govt approves 10-hr workdays, night shifts for women in bid to attract more industry, investment
In a bid 'to reduce procedural compliance burden on industrial establishments' and thereby attract new industries, investments into the state, the Naidu cabinet has approved amendments to labour laws to extend daily working hours to 10 from present 9. The extended work hour rules will also apply to shops and establishments in Andhra Pradesh, meaning the IT sector too. Hyderabad: The Chandrababu Naidu government, under the slogan 'Speed of Doing Business', has decided to extend minimum working hours for private employees, while also allowing women to work in night shifts, in a major labour reform move. According to Section 54 of the Factories Act, 1948, no adult worker 'is required or allowed to work in a factory for more than nine hours in any day'. The Naidu government has also proposed to increase the interval for rest to 6 hours from the current 5. Going for further amendments in the same law, the Naidu government has decided to let women work night shifts. Section 66 (1) (b) of the Factories Act states that 'no woman shall be required or allowed to work in any factory except between the hours of 6 pm and 7 pm.' 'But now, women may work during night time with safeguards like consent, transport, security etc., facilities and under CCTV surveillance in well-lit areas,' Information and Public Relations Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy told reporters after the cabinet meeting last Wednesday at Amaravati. 'The facilitation would allow women's higher work participation in the organised sector, major industries, and corporate areas. It empowers women economically and promotes gender inclusion in industrial growth,' he added. The total number of overtime work hours in a quarter—currently restricted to 75—can now go up to 144. 'Through these amendments, we are adopting global best practices. If the labour laws, regulations are convenient for workers and investors, businesses will come here naturally,' said Kolusu, adding that the relaxations are being brought under the government's push for ease of doing business in AP. The cabinet thus approved proposals from the Labour, Factory Boilers & Insurance Medical Services Department to amend certain provisions of sections 54, 55, 56, 59, 64, 65, 66 of the Factories Act through the Andhra Pradesh Factories Act Amendment Bill, 2025, and certain provisions of sections 9, 10, 16, 17, 73 of the AP Shops and Establishments Act, 1988, through the AP Shops and Establishments Amendment Bill, 2025. The amendment bills are expected to be introduced in the next assembly session. However, industrialists are divided on the proposed changes. 'In manufacturing sectors, you cannot expect an employee to operate for long hours as the hard work tires them by 6-7 hours, bringing down efficiency thereafter. A worker losing focus is not good, posing dangers of industrial mishap or productivity losses,' Lakshmi Prasad Mekala, MD, Sujay Biotech, told ThePrint. 'Of course, the easing will be beneficial to other sectors like marketing, sales, small businesses, and those under the Shops and Establishments Act,' Mekala, past chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry Andhra Pradesh, added.
