LONDON - Classical Russian-German pianist Igor Levit takes to a London stage this week for an epic musical endurance test directed by the world-famous Serbian performance artist Marina Abramovic.
Levit is aiming to be the first person to solo play "Vexations", a single sheet of music repeated 840 times, in a public performance expected to last at least 16 hours.
The audience at central London's Queen Elizabeth Hall will witness "silence, endurance, immobility and contemplation, where time ceases to exist", according to Abramovic on the venue's website.
Written by Erik Satie in 1893, "Vexations" is described as "one of classical music's most simple, yet arduous and demanding works".
Satie's manuscript included a composer's note instructing that it should be repeated 840 times, a feat which generally takes between 16-20 hours of continuous playing.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Levit livestreamed a "Vexations" performance from a Berlin studio.
He also streamed dozens of "concerts" from his flat in the German city to highlight the challenges faced by artists during lockdown.
Although numerous pianists playing in succession have succeeded in performing "Vexations" over the years, it has rarely been completed in its entirety by a single musician.
Tickets have been priced from £32 for a one hour slot with others available for the full-length performance.
Levit, who is a professor at Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media, has released a dozen albums of classical works including Beethoven's complete piano sonatas and concertos by Brahms.
Levit told The Guardian daily he'd "never tell an audience" what they should hope to experience.
"But I would encourage people to just literally let it go. There is no agenda in this piece. There is no meaning to it," he said.
"It's just empty space, so just dive into that and let go. That would be the dream," he added.
Abramovic, 78, an art world icon, has earned worldwide acclaim for her work that has frequently tested her own physical and mental endurance.
In one of her best known early works Rhythm O, Abramovic invited audiences to interact with her in any way they chose which resulted in a loaded gun being held to her head.

Image: Supplied Nothing quite gets the adrenaline pumping like the thought of careering around a track in a car that's specially designed for maximum power and performance. It's also pretty impressive to see close to R60-million lined front to back at the Zwartkops raceway in Pretoria. It's where the Mercedes-Benz AMG Driving Academy is situated and we had the rare opportunity to throw a horde of them around the track with wild abandon. Brad Pitt It was also a precursor to the Apex F1 movie set to be released shortly. Naturally the Mercedes F1 livery features strongly in the film that features Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Manzies and Javier Bardem. There's also a couple of cameos by multiple world champion Lewis Hamilton (now racing for Ferrari) which will no doubt leave CEO of the Mercedes AMG F1 team and head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Toto Wolff grimacing. South Africa is one of the world's top consumers of the AMG products and it's understandable why people with deep pockets want to experience some of the best German technology and engineering. The thrill of gripping a sports steering wheel, AMG sports seats, hitting apexes on corners and the exhaust notes (either real or piped in) is difficult to explain to someone who sees cars merely as something to get from point A to B. Image: Supplied Bonus For me, it had the added bonus of getting seat and track time around the circuit as we head into the next round of the Toyota Gazoo GR Cup at Zwartkops later this month. With colleague and experienced racer Mark Jones next to me to give a few pointers, I'm hoping it all pays off on race weekend. Jones had also just returned from testing the AMG GT 63 S E Performance Coupe where he managed an astounding 0-100 km/h in 2.76 seconds! With three races under the belt, my racing craft has also improved considerably, so I wasn't as hesitant to push the limit as I may have been previously. GTR Pro Which brings me to what I think was the standout drive of the day, the Mercedes-Benz GTR Pro. Much to petrolheads' disappointment it's been discontinued and no doubt it will become a rare classic in the years to come. It's a hardcore heavily track focussed car and as close as you'll get to a pure GTC racing car. Under the long sculptured bonnet is a glorious-sounding 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 engine with 430kW and 700Nm with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission that will get from zero to 100kph in 3.6 seconds. We obviously chose Race Mode. I don't like to use the cliched word "beast" when it comes to cars, but with all that power sent to the rear wheels, it's well … a beast. We had a couple of laps to get the feel of it, whereafter we were given the go-ahead to send it. On a tight circuit like Zwartkops with eight corners including a hairpin, you quickly realise that stomping too hard on the loud pedal will send the back round and get you into trouble. Once you get used to it, it pivots like a ballerina despite its weight and size and you can fully immerse yourself in the experience. It really is such a pity that soon there won't be any big thundering V8s made anymore. The CLA 45 S derives 310kW and 500Nm from its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. Image: Supplied C 63 S E Performance Making up for brute power on the other end of the scale with spectacular technology, engineering and F1 innovation is the recently released AMG C 63 S E Performance. More scalpel than sledgehammer, it has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine combined with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor, a high-performance battery developed in Affalterbach and fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. This gives it a combined output of 500kW and 1,020Nm. It's an engineering anorak's dream with the 150kW electric motor positioned at the rear axle, integrated with an electrically shifted two-speed transmission and the electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential in a compact electric drive unit. What it all boils down to is a helluva car to take advantage of on the track. With active rear-axle steering and Track Pace that intelligently distributes the use of electric energy over a lap, it sits on rails on the limit around the corners and is obviously a lot more composed than the GTR Pro. CLA 45 S Not to be outdone by the saloon cars, the CLA 45 S hatchback was just as much fun to drive. With 310kW and 500Nm from its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine also driving all four wheels via an eight-speed dual clutch transmission, it's almost a better combination for a track like Zwartkops. There's no second thoughts about flooring it out of the corners for fear of the racing gods' retribution. It's pin-point accurate in the turns, aided by a mechanical limited-slip diff in front and an electronically-controlled rear diff. And with air ducts designed to cool the brakes, there was virtually no fade as we pushed things as hard as we could. The day continued with every model providing a unique AMG experience and each with their own highlights, including the impressive C43 sedan that provided a few rear squiggly moments. Image: Supplied SUV compromise What was also abundantly clear after driving them back-to-back was the vastly different handling characteristics between the sedans and hatchbacks compared to the AMG GLC SUVs. Under normal daily driving conditions it's not something that is obvious because you'd be arrested for doing what we did on a track day. You know the big GLC 63 S is fast with the same oily bits under the bonnet as the C 63 S E Performance, but, it's not as forgiving and it will get the better of you a lot quicker. The first few laps were fine but once it was time to put the hammer down, immediately you had to brake earlier, approach slower and exit a lot more carefully. After the hairpin at turn two, there's a gentle right-hander into the back straight. GLC 63 S has the same oily bits under the bonnet as the C 63 S E Performance. Image: Supplied Once the steering has opened after the hairpin it's basically foot flat till you get to the top of the straight. That was all fine in the other cars but 'jinne mense', in the GLC it didn't seem to follow the line out of the corner and required a lot more steering input to prevent changing underpants or using its 4x4 abilities on the grass and kitty litter. It was a similar story with the GLC 43, although not as pronounced with less power at 310kW and 500Nm. I know manufacturers talk about car-like handling when launching an SUV, and they do so, when you're out on public roads. But whether it's an AMG performance SUV or bog-standard Merc GL range, when punting it around a track, they will always be compromised. It's not a critique, it's just the way it is but either way, driving a Mercedes-Benz AMG Performance product is one of the most fun things you can do with your clothes on.

Cinema isn't dead – there's no business like show business

When news broke that Ster-Kinekor was closing its Cavendish Square cinema in Cape Town, it felt like another nail in the coffin for movie theatres in South Africa. This cinephile, however, knows the makings of a comeback story when she sees one. I may not be old, but I'm old enough to remember when showing up at Cavendish on a Friday night without a pre-booked movie ticket was asking for disappointment. Unless you and your date were satisfied with sitting in opposite corners of the cinema, separated by seven rows of moviegoers, you booked your seats the day before. Anything else was considered a rookie move. I couldn't help but think of those once-packed cinemas when I first read the news about Cavendish closing. Where had the audience gone? What were people now doing on Friday nights? For more than 30 years, Cavendish had played host to first dates, school holidays, Marvel marathons and rainy-day escapes. The popcorn counter, the sticky floors, the 'Silence Your Phone' ads – they were all just set dressing for the real show: the memories. I've visited plenty of cinemas over the years, but this curtain call hits differently. There's something unusually poignant about losing this screen. But here's the twist (doesn't every good story have one?). While the Cavendish closure reads like a sobering sign of decline, the bigger picture is – surprisingly – more hopeful. The end of the beginning In early 2024, Ster-Kinekor announced it was preparing to retrench nearly a third of its workforce. Nine cinema closures were on the cards. On paper, it looked like another textbook example of disruption, a legacy business buckling under the weight of streaming, economic pressure and post-Covid consumer shifts. But as we find ourselves entering the second half of 2025, only two sites – Greenstone Mall and Boardwalk in Richards Bay – have shut their doors. And only 52 staff were ultimately laid off, not 236. That's still painful, of course, but also evidence of something rare in a corporate survival story: restraint, negotiation and a willingness to adapt. Ster-Kinekor, fresh out of business rescue since 2022, hasn't collapsed. Instead, it appears to be recalibrating. That doesn't mean that the outlook is all roses. There's no denying the very real pressure, not just on Ster-Kinekor, but on cinemas everywhere. Globally, the rise of on-demand streaming has reshaped audience behaviour. Platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ offer thousands of hours of content, including Oscar-winning films and star-studded series, available at home, on demand, and often at a lower cost than a single cinema ticket. Many of these releases hit streaming on the same day as the cinema, if not sooner. Then there's the hardware factor. Large-screen TVs have become cheaper and more accessible. A 65-inch UHD TV no longer costs three months' salary, and when paired with decent sound, the 'home theatre' now rivals what used to be a luxury cinema experience. Add inflation, rising fuel costs and stretched entertainment budgets, and it's clear that Ster-Kinekor isn't just competing with other theatres. It's competing with couches. A company in motion And yet, the numbers reveal that people are still going to the movies. Admissions are up 20% year on year between November and April, according to Ster-Kinekor CEO Mark Sardi. It's not a fluke – it's the result of a business trying new things. Ticket sales are up, and not just for the usual Marvel blockbusters. 'We've seen material increases in footfall,' Sardi told The Money Show. 'Our biggest challenge now is staying nimble.' Staying nimble means offering more than just a movie. It means curating an experience, at a price people are willing to pay. Ster-Kinekor's R50 Throwback Cinema experiment is a perfect case study. One week, one classic, one cheap ticket. The first rotation of titles included Notting Hill, Back to the Future, Chicago, and Meet Joe Black – films that practically beg for the collective gasp and chuckle of a live audience. The idea started as a test in 2024, with only a handful of Ster-Kinekor cinemas offering Throwback titles. In 2025, the experiment has not only been proven to be a success, but has subsequently been rolled out to more Ster-Kinekor cinemas across the country. Read any article about the state of the cinema business, and you're sure to be met by an avalanche of commenters complaining about the cost of going to the movies. These people have a valid point. If I were to take myself, my partner and two children to see the live-action remake of Disney's Lilo & Stitch on the big screen today, the total cost of four tickets plus snacks would come to just over R1,000. By comparison, my Disney+ subscription costs R1,590 for 12 months of limitless streaming, and they'll probably start streaming that same movie in August. Fortunately, Ster-Kinekor appears to be listening. The price quoted above is for four full-price movie tickets. However, if I were an Edgars Club member, I could have saved up to 40% on tickets and 50% on selected snack combos. With a Discovery Vitality membership, I would have paid 50% less for the adult tickets and the kids would have watched, free. I could have used my Smart Shopper points (thanks, Pick n Pay) to buy tickets, or I could have paid 50% less on a Tuesday, if I were a Ster-Kinekor Club member. And then there's the weekday 'Epic Deal': popcorn, Coke, and a movie ticket for R149, even for those of us who don't carry any of the aforementioned cards. That kind of value – often brought to the table through strategic partnerships – helps ease the affordability issue that's long plagued Ster-Kinekor's mainstream business. Doing what the couch can't On the opposite end of the affordability spectrum, Ster-Kinekor is also doubling down on premium experiences, because some people want to pay for a night away from the couch. To meet this audience, Ster-Kinekor is expanding its Cine Prestige offering, which features luxury recliners, boutique service and fewer children in the cinema. Kids' Cinemas, which are reimagined with child-friendly layouts and programming, are also in development. Though Ster-Kinekor has only a handful of IMAX screens, they punch well above their weight when it comes to filling seats. When a film is released in this format, bookings surge. Audiences want to see Dune, Oppenheimer, or Avatar on the biggest, loudest, most immersive screen possible, and they're willing to pay for that experience. The 2025 box office will feature at least 14 IMAX films, double the number released in any previous year in the 'filmed for IMAX' slate. This isn't a Ster-Kinekor decision – IMAX films are made in a specific format, so it's up to the whims of Hollywood how many are released in a year. This just happens to be a bumper year for IMAX, and Ster-Kinekor stands ready to reap those rewards. All this careful positioning is a sign that Ster-Kinekor is thinking in segments, not averages. It's building experiences for specific audiences, not trying to serve everyone the same way. Cinema isn't dead, it just needs to pitch itself as something worth leaving the house for. Writing the next act The easy comparison is Blockbuster – a symbol of an old industry that failed to see the future in time to pivot. But Ster-Kinekor is doing something different. It's listening. It's experimenting. It's taking the nostalgia people feel for cinema and packaging it into formats that work in 2025. Most tellingly, the company isn't just closing doors, it's preparing to open new ones. In the same Money Show episode, Sardi said Ster-Kinekor was in the advanced stages of launching cinemas at four new 'commercially attractive' sites. Not just replacements, but opportunities to start afresh, using the lessons of the past few years. They're betting that there's still a role for the big screen in a small-screen world. But only if they get the experience, the pricing, and the product right. The curtain hasn't fallen yet. And for now, at least, the projector is still rolling. DM
