Beyond the Earth Day theme: Corporates in action mode

Hindustan Times22-04-2025

A theme itself will not move the needle and get things done. While the 2025 Earth Day theme, Our Power, Our Planet, is a powerful statement crafted to inspire and ignite conversations, turning this into reality will depend on action. This year's theme also underscores the growing responsibility of businesses in shaping a sustainable future through definite actions -- decisive, sustained, and far-reaching.
In India, many corporates have become trailblazers in sustainability by stepping up to take ownership of the environmental impact of their operations and investing in impactful change. Studying some of these corporate-led green initiatives offer not only an inspiration for others to follow suit but also provides a practical action blueprint to combat climate change meaningfully and at scale. One example of a long-term champion of sustainability is ITC which aims to meet 100% of its electrical energy needs from renewable sources by 2030. This is backed by substantial investments in green infrastructure and supply chain decarbonisation. Twelve of the company's hotels are the first in the world to receive LEED Zero Carbon certification and five are the first to ever be LEED Zero Water certified. As the country strives for net-zero emissions by 2070, it becomes pivotal to how public-private synergy can drive systemic, scalable climate action.
ITC is well on their way to achieve their sustainability goal as in FY 2023-24, the company has already met over 50% of its total energy requirements from renewable sources such as solar, wind and biomass. In October 2024, it commissioned a new solar project in Karnataka, which took the company's share of renewable energy in its total electricity consumption in the state to nearly 90%.
Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) is another company that has committed to achieving 100% energy needs from renewable energy sources. And HMIL is aiming to reach the target by 2025! One of the strategies adopted by Hyundai India is purchasing green power since October 2022 from the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) to increase its renewable energy portfolio to 64%.
Apart from action and awareness, innovation is a key driver to scale results. AvanStrate, has recently launched its latest innovation—a display glass that enables a 95% reduction in carbon emissions. It is also the industry's first display glass to incorporate at least 50% recycled content. This innovation exemplifies how sustainable transformation in high-volume industries can create outsized impact.
A growing number of companies are taking green actions and are reframing their business models to operate on the cutting edge of sustainability and climate action. Global initiatives like RE100, which bring together hundreds of large and forward-looking businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity, have made some real impact. But imagine the scale of the impact if every company in the world commits to meet all of their electrical energy needs by a defined timeline. So, to save our planet, it makes perfect sense for all companies to start talking about and taking action to weave in sustainability across their respective operations.

Maruti, Hyundai eye robust growth in exports amid domestic challenges

Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor India expect healthy growth in overseas shipments in the current fiscal year amid challenging business environment in the domestic market. Hyundai Motor India is looking at single-digit volume growth in its exports in the current fiscal year, while Maruti Suzuki is bullish to achieve around 20 per cent volume growth in its overseas shipments. "We are aiming to become Hyundai's largest export hub outside South Korea. We aspire to continue our growth trajectory in exports in the coming years," Hyundai Motor India Managing Director Unsoo Kim told analysts during a call. Exports have gained strong momentum in recent months, and the automaker aims to sustain this trajectory going forward, he added. "For FY26, we anticipate the growth in export volumes to be around 7-8 per cent, supported by robust demand for our products in the emerging markets," Kim stated. Hyundai Motor India exported 1,63,386 vehicles in FY25 as compared with 1,63,155 units in FY24. Maruti Suzuki India on the other hand aims to sell 4 lakh units in export markets this fiscal year. "Our target for this year (FY26) is at least four lakh units, which implies growth of at least 20 per cent over FY25," MSI Senior Executive Officer (Corporate Affairs) Rahul Bharti said in a recent media call. He said the company's exports are fairly diversified with presence in about 100 countries. "Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia are our big markets. We have entered Japan recently, and it has quickly sprung up to the second top most destination on the back of just two models, the Fronx and the Jimny," Bharti said. And the interesting part is that the EV is yet to come, and that will shore up the numbers further, he stated. "We do think that our market share in exports will grow this year. We are already at 43 per cent and the golden mark of 50 per cent is close," Bharti stated. Last fiscal year, Maruti Suzuki reported record exports of 3,32,585 units, a growth of 17.5 per cent over FY24. The auto major had exported 2,83,067 units in 2023-24 fiscal year. The company accounted for nearly 43 per cent of the country's total passenger vehicle exports last fiscal year. Fronx, Jimny, Baleno, Swift, and Dzire were the highest exported models in 2024-25 while South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Japan, and Mexico were the top five markets. Commenting on the business outlook for the domestic market, Kim said, "For financial year FY26, our endeavour is to grow broadly in line with the industry, driven by our strong SUVization and premiumisation strategy along with focus on rural markets, among others." The demand environment in the domestic market continues to be challenging, but the automaker remains optimistic in its strong fundamentals, he added. Industry body SIAM has projected passenger vehicle sales growth in the domestic market to be in low single-digits in FY26. Last month, Suzuki Motor Corporation noted that the overall passenger vehicle wholesale in the Indian market is expected to grow 1-2 per cent in 2025-26, with Maruti Suzuki looking to outpace industry growth. Hyundai Motor India Targets 7–8% Growth in Exports for FY 2025-26, Eyes Role as Brand's Largest Export Hub Outside Korea

New Delhi: Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is eyeing a 7–8% growth in export volumes for the financial year 2025–26, as it marks 25 years of vehicle exports from India. The company has set its sights on becoming Hyundai's largest export hub outside of South Korea. Having begun its export operations in 1999 from Chennai Port, HMIL has shipped more than 3.7 million India-made vehicles globally, maintaining its position as the country's largest cumulative exporter of passenger vehicles. In FY 2024–25 alone, Hyundai exported 1,63,386 units, with Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Mexico, Chile, and Peru ranking among its top international markets. The automaker currently exports to over 60 countries and has a lineup of nine tailor-made products for overseas markets, including models like the Hyundai CRETA, CRETA Electric, ALCAZAR, EXTER, VENUE, AURA, VERNA, Grand i10 NIOS, and i20. HMIL recently commenced exports of the CRETA Electric to select neighbouring countries. 'In 2024-25, HMIL reached a significant milestone by completing 25 years of exports from India,' said Unsoo Kim, Managing Director, Hyundai Motor India Limited. 'As we aim to become Hyundai's largest export hub outside South Korea, we expect strong momentum to continue, with export volumes projected to grow by 7–8% in FY26.' Chennai Port has played a critical role in HMIL's export success. Shri S. Kirupanandasamy, Traffic Manager at Chennai Port Authority, noted the port's long-standing partnership with Hyundai. 'As the largest automobile export port in the Bay of Bengal, Chennai Port has served as a vital gateway for Hyundai's global shipments since 1999. Our dedicated facilities, including a holding yard for over 4,000 vehicles, support seamless export operations.' The company has achieved several export milestones faster than any other OEM in India – reaching 1 million units by 2010, 2 million by 2014, and 3 million by 2020. With a global strategy aligned to its 'Progress for Humanity' vision, Hyundai Motor India remains committed to expanding its footprint in emerging markets and reinforcing India's role as a major global automotive manufacturing base.
