H&M Says Shoppers Are Cautious as Q2 Sales Fall More Than Expected

Asharq Al-Awsat8 hours ago

Swedish fashion retailer H&M reported on Thursday a slightly bigger drop than expected in second-quarter sales and said it expected sales in June, measured in local currencies, to rise 3%.
CEO Daniel Erver said in a statement that times are uncertain, with cautious consumers, Reuters reported.
Retailers are navigating Trump's rapidly shifting tariff announcements as concerns grow about resurgent inflation and a global economic slowdown, which have dampened shopping enthusiasm in the United States and other major consumer markets.
"The company is closely monitoring developments in global trade and trade restrictions," H&M said.
The world's second-largest listed fashion retailer's sales in the March-May period were 56.7 billion crowns ($5.99 billion), down from 59.6 billion a year ago. Analysts polled by LSEG had on average forecast a turnover of 57.0 billion crowns.
Measured in local currencies, sales were however up 1%.
"With good flexibility in the supply chain and through the pricing of the customer offering there are opportunities to adapt the business to changed conditions," H&M said.
Operating profit fell to 5.91 billion crowns from 7.10 billion, against a forecast of 5.88 billion.

Young Leaders Advancing Potential Climate Solutions Could Win $1 Million Grants

Youth-led climate groups are getting a $25 million injection from a philanthropic collaborative that hopes other funders will follow their lead in supporting solutions created by younger generations grappling with a future marked by increasing temperatures and rising sea levels. Despite recent upticks in donations to nonprofits combating climate change, Enlight Foundation President Xin Liu said emerging leaders on the front lines of the crisis are not getting enough of that money. So she and The Patchwork Collective are offering 1 million multi-year grants to 25 community organizations led by 15- to 35-year-olds. 'There's a little funder stigma of trusting youth, trusting young funders, trusting their capacity, their ability to lead,' Liu said. 'They're really quite often very innovative and creative. And very much close to the problem, which drives them to come up with really impactful solutions,' she added. 'As an older generation, we have a responsibility in helping them, empowering them to scale their work too.' The award is open to anyone globally who is tackling a broad range of climate issues, including education, justice, resilience, conservation, sustainable agriculture, and disaster preparedness. Applicants have until Sept. 22 to enter the open call run by Lever for Change, a nonprofit affiliate of the MacArthur Foundation. The competition is part of Enlight Foundation's spend-down strategy. The nonprofit–created by Liu and Chinese tech billionaire Duan Yongping to fund education equality and youth empowerment–plans to give away all its resources in the next eight years. Liu said the foundation won't be able to sunset without collaborations like this one. Lever for Change, which has rallied its donor network to unlock $2.5 billion across 16 open calls, made for a perfect partner. The Patchwork Collective–a family philanthropy founded by Marie and Benoit Dageville that funds grassroots programs developed by communities to address their own issues–voluntarily contributed $5 million after learning about the competition. Lever for Change President Kristen Molyneaux said everyone has a role to play. More than a dozen young advisors gave feedback on the open call's design and will help with peer review, according to Liu. Youth-led organizations and climate experts are welcome to participate in the external evaluation panel. Liu is inviting more funders to join because she said each additional $1 million will allow them to benefit another awardee. 'The people who are most invested in this are the people who are going to be bearing the burden of climate change in their future,' Molyneaux said. 'So they understand the importance of this issue and how to mobilize their communities.' The length of the multi-year grants will be tailored to the recipients' needs. Recognizing that some organizations might not have the capacity to accept all that money at once, Liu said two- to five-year periods are fine. Enlight Foundation will also do more than just write a check. Liu promised to provide mentorship and connections to 'really watch them flourish.' 'I am very excited, especially during this very uncertain time for young people around the world,' Liu said. 'They are going to build a much better and brighter future when they are engaged.'

H&M seeks to Lure US Shoppers as Fast-fashion Rivals Hike Prices Due to Tariffs

H&M is trying to win shoppers from rivals in the United States by holding prices steady while Zara and Shein raise theirs, as US tariffs disrupt the fast-fashion industry that relies on imports of low-cost clothes from China, Vietnam, and other Asian countries. H&M CEO Daniel Erver said on Thursday constantly changing tariffs had created turbulence, with the world's second-largest listed fashion retailer planning for multiple scenarios. In an interview, he told Reuters that the challenge in the coming months is "to understand the consumer sentiment, which we see has dropped in the US due to all the turbulence... with the fact that some will be forced to raise prices more, and what (that creates) as an opportunity". "Different competitors are acting in different ways, some more aggressively, some more cautiously," he added. H&M has around 500 stores across the US, its second-largest market after Germany in terms of sales, accounting for 13% in 2024. As US tariffs add to costs for retailers, relative price positioning is front of mind for executives, and the timing of price increases is key, with companies watching the competition closely to see who will blink first. For H&M, which is trying to improve its profitability, sticking to current prices for longer carries risks as rising costs eat into margins. But it also provides an opportunity to take market share from rivals. "Maybe they are going to raise prices in the US... but just to a lesser extent as compared to competitors," Pareto Securities analyst Alexander Siljestrom said. H&M can also mitigate the tariff impact by shifting production of US-bound clothes from China, which faces the highest tariff rate, to Bangladesh and elsewhere, he said. Across categories including dresses, jeans, and shirts, the average US price at H&M's bigger competitor Zara was up by 28% this month from a year ago, according to data from price tracking firm EDITED, while prices at H&M in the US were on average down 3% year-on-year. Zara prices were up across the board in June compared to January this year, EDITED found, while H&M has kept prices more or less stable, even though its chief financial officer Adam Karlsson said in March that price hikes were likely to offset tariffs. Shein, which sends clothes direct to US shoppers from factories in China, has also had to raise prices and suffered weaker customer growth since Trump ended the "de minimis" duty-free treatment of low-value parcels. SOURCING FROM FEWER, CLOSER SUPPLIERS As it aims to improve its supply chain and get new styles to stores faster, H&M has spent the last 18 months consolidating its supplier base, Erver said, aiming to order more from a smaller number of big suppliers who also operate factories in multiple countries. "We look at each individual order to decide what's the best sourcing market depending on the craftsmanship, the skills, the pricing situation, but also now more than ever the geopolitical situation with trade barriers," he told Reuters. "That has led us in certain cases to take the decision to move things to different markets." H&M also aims to be below full capacity with all of its suppliers, so it can easily increase production if needed when an item sells well, Erver said. As part of its "nearshoring" strategy of sourcing products from suppliers closer to main consumer hubs, H&M is looking to increase its supplier base in markets like Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, and Morocco for Europe, Erver said. H&M will also add suppliers in Brazil, where it is opening its first stores in the second half, he added.

Pearson and Google Team up to Bring AI Learning Tools to Classrooms

Pearson has entered a multi-year partnership with Alphabet's Google cloud service, providing students with AI learning tools that also make teachers' jobs easier, the British education company said on Thursday. The tie-up will focus on creating personalized learning tools powered by Google's advanced artificial intelligence models for students in primary and secondary school, Reuters reported. The tools will adapt to each student's pace and needs, while also helping teachers track performance and tailor lessons, the companies said in a statement. Pearson Chief Executive Omar Abbosh said AI could help reshape school education by replacing uniform teaching methods with personalized learning paths tailored to individual students. Pearson has also signed multi-year AI-focused partnerships with Microsoft and Amazon's cloud computing services, as part of its efforts to personalize learning and offer more digital education tools.
