North District aiming to erase match-fixing scar with ‘beautiful football'

Head coach Chan Chi-hong has said he hopes to introduce a 'beautiful' brand of football, as embattled North District seek to repair their reputation following last season's match-fixing allegations.
Chan accepted the 'big challenge' of trying to revitalise the Premier League's basement team when he was appointed last month.
The 46-year-old, whose side suffered a morale-sapping 4-1 loss at Southern on Saturday, joined soon after the club parted ways with title sponsor Crownity.
North District said Crownity had failed to fulfil payments this season, while it was speculated that the construction company decided to walk away because of the corruption allegations.
Chan, who played for South China and Hong Kong, said he had no intimate knowledge of that situation, and was adamant North District had the means to compete in the top flight beyond this season.
Last May, one coach and two players from North District were among 12 people arrested on suspicion of bribery, match-fixing and illegal gambling.

Hong Kong artist remanded after being charged again over ‘Freedom' graffiti

A Hong Kong graffiti artist who was previously convicted for tagging the word 'Freedom' across the city has been remanded in custody after being charged with criminal damage for the third time. Appearing before Magistrate Gary Chu at the West Kowloon Law Courts on Thursday, 42-year-old Chan King-fai was taken into remand after he was again charged with three counts of criminal damage. He allegedly defaced shopfronts, traffic light control boxes, and traffic signs in Kwai Chung in 2023. Chan, who was not required to enter a plea on Thursday, is scheduled to appear in court again on July 3. The graffiti artist was taken into detention after his bail application was denied. Chan had been granted bail on two earlier occasions when he was charged with criminal damage. In March, the street artist was charged with 20 counts of criminal damage for tagging the Chinese characters for 'Freedom' combined with dollar signs in the vicinity of Central and Sheung Wan between January 5 and February 5 this year. He allegedly did so 'with the intention of damaging or being reckless as to whether or not the property would be damaged,' according to a court document. Chan is scheduled to appear in court on June 23 for the case. Chan was also previously arrested and charged with criminal damage in February 2023 after tagging objects – including buildings, shops, fuse boxes, bridges, and private vehicles – across the city between January and February that year. He was sentenced to a one-year probation order in December 2023 for tagging the word 'Freedom' across Hong Kong some 130 times, after admitting 20 counts of criminal damage and telling police that the graffiti was a response to financial pressure.

Chelsea win race to sign Ipswich striker Delap

Chelsea win race to sign Ipswich striker Delap Delap scored twelve Premier League goals during his spell with Ipswich. Photo: AFP Chelsea beat off competition from Premier League rivals to sign English striker Liam Delap from Ipswich for a reported fee of US$41 million. Delap, 22, scored 12 Premier League goals during his sole season at Portman Road but could not prevent Ipswich making an immediate return to the Championship. Manchester United and Everton were also reportedly willing to meet the buyout clause in the England under-21 international's contract. But Chelsea have won the race for the former Manchester City forward, bolstering their attacking options ahead of the Club World Cup in the United States, starting later this month. "I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach," said Delap, who has signed a six-year contract, in a Chelsea statement. "It's going to be an incredible place for me to develop, and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies." The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League and will return to the Champions League next season after a two-year absence. And Enzo Maresca's men last week beat Real Betis 4-1 in the Conference League final to secure a trophy in the Italian manager's first season in charge. In mid-December Chelsea were within touching distance of eventual Premier League champions Liverpool before hitting a rocky patch. They finished the season strongly, securing a top-five spot on the final day of the season but were hamstrung by their lack of a clinical number nine. Senegal international Nicolas Jackson scored just 10 times in 30 Premier League appearances, while Christopher Nkunku looks set to leave the club after an underwhelming two-year spell. Delap, the son of former Stoke midfielder Rory Delap, began his career at Manchester City but struggled to break into Pep Guardiola's star-studded first team. After loan spells in the second tier with Stoke, Preston and Hull, he was snapped up by Ipswich after they won promotion to the Premier League a year ago. Delap was one of the few success stories for the Tractor Boys during a difficult season as they were relegated back to the Championship with just 22 points. Chelsea will face Flamengo, LAFC and ES Tunis in the group stages of the Club World Cup, which gets underway on June 14. (AFP)

Man City sign Milan midfielder Reijnders for 55m euros

Man City sign Milan midfielder Reijnders for 55m euros Tijjani Reijnders shows off his most valuable player award for the season in Milan. File photo: AFP Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from Serie A side AC Milan on a five-year contract worth 55 million euros, a team source confirmed on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Reijnders joined Milan in 2023 on a five-year contract, which he further extended until 2030 in March. He has made 104 appearances for the club in all competitions, winning one Italian Supercup title. He impressed during the 2024-25 season, scoring 15 goals in all competitions as he was named the Serie A's best midfielder, despite Milan finishing eighth in the league. Reijnders has also made 22 appearances for the Netherlands. His signing will boost Pep Guardiola's options in midfield following Kevin De Bruyne's departure, who will leave after a decade at the club having lifted six Premier League titles, as well as winning the Champions League and Club World Cup in 2023. City finished third in the 2024-25 Premier League season and only secured a Champions League berth on the final day of the campaign. They are next in action at the Club World Cup and face Wydad AC in their opening game on June 18, before taking on Al-Ain and Juventus in their Group G fixtures. (Reuters)
