Lawson frontman Andy Brown undergoing chemotherapy after rare health diagnosis
Andy Brown from the boy band Lawson has revealed his health diagnosis for the first time which puts him at risk of leukaemia. The lead vocalist for the band, 38, shared an image from his hospital bed as he shared that he has been privately dealing with a rare blood disorder for the past decade. 'For the past 10 years, I've been living with a rare blood disorder. Up to now, it hadn't massively affected my day-to-day life, apart from frequent blood tests and the occasional infection, but as things stand, if it's not treated, I have a very high chance of developing leukaemia. 'I've been under close supervision at King's College Hospital in London, which has one of the country's leading haematology departments. And after a lot of discussions, we've come to the decision that the best way to prevent leukaemia is for me to have a stem cell transplant. He then revealed that he has found a donor – a person who he has never met. 'I have a 100% matching donor. I find it so overwhelming that a total stranger, someone I've never met, is willing to give up their cells and blood to save my life. That's just incredible. With everything awful going on in the world, it's easy to lose faith in people, but then you see things like this, people willing to do something so selfless, and it restores your hope.' He then explained that he was hoping sharing his story would encourage others to learn about stem cell donation and sign the register. He added that he would update fans on his journey and share his story as he hopes to make a full recovery. 'It's stepped up big time the last couple of days, not feeling the best at the moment, but there's just no way around it. Three more days to go, then the new stem cells go in next Tuesday!' He added that although he was being upbeat, the chemotherapy had been gruelling. 'Staying positive as much as I can, but I won't pretend it's easy. I've spent years being so mindful of what I put into my body, ten years sober, clean eating, all of it. 'So feeling what this chemo is doing hits hard. But I know it's part of the fight. It's about accepting it, getting through it, and coming back stronger.' 'Anyway, next week is when the real battle begins. That's when the transplant happens, and my body starts the process of rebuilding from scratch. It's a second chance at life, and not everyone gets that opportunity. 'Stem cell donors are hard to find. You could literally be the match that saves a little girl's life, a dad's life, someone's world. If you're healthy and able, please consider signing up to the register. It takes minutes, but it can change everything for someone like me. 'This is just another chapter. Nothing is gonna stop me #StemCellTransplant#ChemoJourney' This comes just a week after he announced to fans that he had been living with a rare blood disorder for 10 years. Andy has previously battled other health issues, and 18 years ago he had a brain tumour removed. When the band was actually originally called The Groves but opted to be renamed Lawson after David Lawson, a consultant neurosurgeon at The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Liverpool, who operated on Andy. The singer credited the doctor with saving his life in 2007 after a gruelling 17-hour-long operation to remove an acoustic neuroma, a non-cancerous brain tumour that was growing on the nerve of his inner ear. Lawson hasn't released an album since 2021, and Andy appears to have found focus in his new photography career. The singer was supported by various fans and friends in the music industry. More Trending Zoe Ball commented: 'sending love 🧡.' Laura Whitmore added: 'Think of you Andy. Nigerian-British woman makes history as UK's youngest mayor at just 29 years old
29-year-old Princess Opeyemi Bright has been inaugurated as the youngest mayor in the United Kingdom, holding the position of First Citizen of Barking and Dagenham in London A Nigerian-British woman has made history after she was elected the youngest mayor in the UK. Princess Opeyemi Bright now holds the esteemed position of First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. The 29-year-old was officially inaugurated in a ceremony on Friday, May 16. It marks a new chapter for British politics and helps shine a light on and celebrate Nigeria and its history. In her inaugural address, Councillor Bright shared her vision of a civic leadership grounded in inclusivity, pride and community service. She said: "I believe in the power of community, the importance of tradition, and the need to inspire pride in the place we all call home." She continued: "As Civic Mayor, I am committed to being a voice that uplifts our borough — honouring local heroes, supporting charities, and forging deeper connections with residents, schools, and businesses." Born to Nigerian parents in Homerton Hospital, and a resident of Barking and Dagenham since 2009, the trailblazer was first elected as a Councillor in 2018 at the age of just 22. Over the years she has gone on to serve as a school governor, a board member of an NGO, and continues to be an inspirational mentor for students who aspire to be leaders and professionals themselves. Councillor Bright brings a wealth of experience in community engagement and public service, and as part of her mayoral duties will support two charities very close to her heart. The first is Ab Phab Youth Club, a local initiative that provides inclusive youth activities and support for disabled and non-disabled young people. And also Crohn's & Colitis UK, a national charity offering critical support and advocacy for people living with inflammatory bowel diseases. The new mayor was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2011 and said: "Through this partnership, I aim to raise awareness, advocate for better support, and bring hope to those affected." In a statement on the Barking and Dagenham Council website, a spokesperson stated: "During her mayoral year, Cllr Bright is committed to fostering a sense of unity and belonging across the borough. Her focus will be on inclusivity, dignity, and connection — making sure all residents, regardless of background, feel valued and seen. The council extends its heartfelt thanks to outgoing Mayor Cllr Moin Quadri for his dedicated service and congratulates Cllr Princess Bright on her appointment."

Nottingham Forest to launch internal probe over handling of Taiwo Awoniyi injury
Nottingham Forest will conduct an internal investigation into the handling of Taiwo Awoniyi's injury after the forward was allowed to play on - only to later end up in an induced coma Nottingham Forest are ready to launch an internal investigation into the medical team's handling of Taiwo Awoniyi 's injury on Sunday - which later saw him placed in an induced coma. The Nigerian striker was injured during the 2-2 draw with Leicester after colliding with a post as he slid in. The medics tended to him but then allowed him to continue playing in a decision that has since attracted plenty of criticism. On Monday he needed surgery to repair a ruptured intestine having suffered severe abdominal injuries. Surgeons stabilised him in an induced coma, which helped restrict his movement and regulate his heart rate. The club have confirmed he is now out and recovering well. Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was fuming at how Awoniyi was allowed to continue playing after treatment - storming onto the pitch to question manager Nuno Espirito Santo - and The Sun reports that he has now launched an internal investigation Forest's experienced club doctor Dr Prithish Shyam Narayan will be quizzed along with club medics and coaches so that the City Ground hierarchy can get the full picture on what happened before making any decisions. In a strongly-worded statement issued by Forest, they made it clear it will not tolerate any player being endangered - and also took aim at the narrative around Marinakis, who was accused of lamenting Nuno following the draw which hampered their Champions League hopes. They said: "The seriousness of his injury is a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game, and why a player's health and well-being must always come first. At Nottingham Forest, this principle is not just policy for us; it is the deeply held belief and conviction of our owner. To Evangelos Marinakis, this isn't just a football club - it's family - and he instils that message in all of us. "That is why he was so personally and emotionally invested in the situation that unfolded at the City Ground on Sunday. His reaction was one of deep care, responsibility, and emotional investment in one of our own. He didn't just see it as an isolated incident, but as something that reflected the values and unity of the entire team. "The truth of the matter is there was no confrontation, with Nuno or with others, either on the pitch or inside the stadium. There was only shared frustration between all of us that the medical team should never have allowed the player to continue. In light of this, we urge former coaches and players, and other public figures in the game, to resist the urge to rush to judgement and fake news online."
