Bleeding the planet dry? Climate change could unlock new threat to the world's blood supply
Climate change might impact the supply and demand chain when it comes to blood transfusions, a new study has found.
Researchers from Red Cross Lifeblood and the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) in Australia believe that blood-borne diseases as well as natural disasters are likely to disturb current patterns.
"As well as limiting the mobility of large numbers of people, these events disrupt the storage, safety, and transportation of blood which has a short shelf life," Dr Elvina Viennet, one of the researchers behind the study, said in a statement.

Every year, 25 million blood units are transfused in Europe. They are needed for treatments of patients undergoing surgery, premature babies, victims of accidents, and patients living with chronic conditions.
'Climate change may impact some infectious diseases that can be transmitted via blood and can prevent people from donating,' Viennet added, mentioning the potential intensification of mosquito-borne diseases such as Dengue Fever, West Nile Virus, and Malaria due to increased rainfall and warmer temperatures.
Warming temperatures are making cases of these diseases more common in Europe, most notably dengue.
Other conditions linked to climate change, such as "extreme weather, including high temperatures, cold exposure, and other climate fluctuations," could also narrow the pool of potential blood donors, according to the study published in The Lancet Planetary Health on Thursday.
These climatic changes can impact haemoglobin concentration, red blood cell counts, and blood pressure.
"We could see new diseases emerge, and other health issues such as blood pressure and hydration, exacerbated by heat, as well as psychological distress and 'climate anxiety' impact donors," said Helen Faddy, an associate professor at UniSC and the study's lead author.

"At the same time, shifts in disease prevalence and natural disaster frequency could increase the demand for blood transfusions due to conditions such as pregnancy complications, cardiovascular disease, and sickle cell disease," she added.
In the study, researchers suggested potential mitigation strategies such as flexible and mobile blood centres, cell salvage - a form of autotransfusion - and international collaboration.
"With rising sea levels increasing migration rates, it's essential to have more blood donors from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, and to increase the number of people who give blood," Faddy said.

ADPH releases report of first case of West Nile virus of 2025
ALABAMA (WDHN) – Alabama's state department of public health has released their report of the first case of the West Nile Virus of 2025. The report was released, as mosquito season intensifies. The West Nile Virus comes from birds and mosquitos, and symptoms include a headache, nausea and a skin rash. The ADPH said 8 out of 10 infected with the West Nile Virus do not show any symptom, while the outbreak of the virus has become more common. Last year, 34 cases of the West Nile Virus happened in Alabama, according to the CDC. The ADPH reported a case of dengue fever and malaria by residents, who traveled outside of the state as well. Conneaut health department studying mosquitos
CONNEAUT — The Conneaut Health Department will start studying the city's mosquito population next week. Conneaut Health Commissioner Nichele Blood said the health department wants to catch mosquitos around the city. 'We set a trap up and it will catch mosquitos for us,' she said. The mosquitos will then be taken to the health department office and frozen for a day, before being sent to an Ohio Department of Health lab for study. Blood said they are primarily interested in learning what species of mosquitos reside in the Conneaut area, and if they carry West Nile Virus. Blood said there have not been any recorded cases of the disease in northeast Ohio recently. According to the ODH website, there have been no cases of the disease in people or mosquitos surveilled across the state so far this year. Blood said the Conneaut Health Department is also monitoring for other mosquito-borne illnesses, including Eastern Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, La Crosse virus, malaria, zika and yellow fever. 'Most are not common,' she said. The program is being paid for by part of a $8,150 grant the health department received from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. The CHD used $5,600 to fund a tire collection at the Conneaut Spring Clean-Up last weekend. Blood said the rest of the grant money is going toward funding the mosquito surveillance and promoting mosquito awareness in Conneaut. Blood said mosquitos thrive in areas where there is standing water, especially unused tires. Blood recommended people take care of items that contain standing water on their properties, including tires, bird baths and toys left outside. People should also make sure to fix screen doors so mosquitos do not get indoors, and make sure to wear mosquito repellent. The CHD will be providing mosquito spray to the public and sending out flyers spreading awareness, Blood said.

Mosquito population surges in North Texas after wet spring, experts warn
Mosquito season is North Texas is officially here, and experts predict it will only get worse thanks to the unusually wet spring. All the rain has created the perfect conditions for mosquitoes to breed and multiply. "They're horrible this year, in my opinion," said a woman out enjoying Trinity Park in Fort Worth. "So yeah, we get bit." Raye Chisholm, the general manager of Mosquito Squad of Fort Worth, said this season's weather is fueling a boom in mosquito activity. "With the high humidity and any little moisture, it's going to keep them in this whole bloom," Chisholm said. Even a small amount of water, as little as a capful, is enough to produce hundreds of mosquitoes. "The ground has not had an opportunity to dry out," said Chisholm. "The water just keeps filling up. You know, we've had customers where their backyards are just staying flooded." According to Chisholm, that means crews are now battling more than just the common mosquitoes — a variety known as the "floodwater mosquito" is also making its presence known in the area. "And they're a lot more aggressive and they're harder to control, as well," Chisholm said. The buzzing pests are more than just a nuisance. They can also carry diseases. Health officials have already detected mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus in both Tarrant and Dallas counties this season. "Makes it really hard," another resident said. "Constantly slapping yourself, hitting yourself, trying to get them to go away, and then you also have the concern of the West Nile coming back or being in the vicinity. So yeah, it is scary for sure." How to avoid and reduce mosquitoes To reduce the risk, experts recommend removing any standing water from your property, including in buckets, gutters, old tires, or under tarps. "I highly recommend the public be very vigilant there in this time," Chisholm said. "We don't usually see this kind of rain in June." Officials advise limiting time outdoors at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. Wearing long sleeves and pants and applying insect repellent can also help protect you and your family.
