Avelo Airlines, once a carrier in Redding, to do charter deportation flights for ICE

Yahoo07-04-2025

Budget carrier Avelo Airlines, which served Redding before pulling out last year, will start deportation flights for the U.S. government next month.
The company announced it has signed an agreement to provide charter flights for the U.S. Homeland Security's Immigration Control and Enforcement.
The charters will be based at the Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona, and Avelo will use three 737-800s to operate the flights, the company said. The 737-800 can seat from 162 to 189 passengers depending on how it is configured.
The twin-engine jet was the same aircraft Avelo flew out of Redding when it was here.
Avelo spokeswoman Madison Jones said the flights are scheduled to start May 12.
'Flights will be both domestic and international to support the Department's deportation efforts,' she wrote in an email.
'With this, Avelo will open a base at AZA with Avelo pilots, flight attendants and aircraft technicians, as well as appropriate local leaders. We expect to begin hiring locally for these positions immediately. Current Avelo Crewmembers (employees) will have the first option to transfer to our new AZA base,' she added.
In a statement, Avelo Airlines CEO Andrew Levy said:
'We realize this is a sensitive and complicated topic. After significant deliberations, we determined this charter flying will provide us with the stability to continue expanding our core scheduled passenger service and keep our more than 1,100 Crewmembers employed for years to come.'
At least one community where Avelo serves is concerned about the news.
'Avelo Airlines' decision to charter deportation flights from Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona is deeply disappointing and disturbing," New Haven (Connecticut) Mayor Justin Elicker stated in The Wilton Bulletin.
Avelo arrived in Redding in May 2021 when it started flights to Hollywood Burbank. In January 2022, the carrier expanded here with flights to Las Vegas.
But Avelo's Las Vegas service in Redding was short-lived as it discontinued the flights in late 2022.
Last August, Avelo completely pulled out of Redding when it stopped its service to Hollywood Burbank. The airline left because Trego Dugan, which provided ground service for Avelo, decided to leave Redding.

Protests against Avelo Airlines' deportation flights continue at Wilmington Airport

Protests against Avelo Airlines' role in deportations persist nationwide, especially here in Delaware. Avelo is the only commercial airline that flies from Wilmington Airport near New Castle. It recently added flights to Jacksonville, Florida, and Raleigh, North Carolina, to 12 other cities. Since 2022, the airline has expanded its operations in Delaware as it gains popularity. Earlier this year, the airline announced that it agreed to a deal with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to help with deportation flights out of Arizona. This has rubbed a lot of Delawareans the wrong way, and many say they will not use the airline until it stops the service. Since the announcement, crowds have gathered outside of Wilmington Airport to protest the airline's move. On May 31, a few dozen protesters in Delaware were a part of a nationwide movement at other airports serving Avelo. It wasn't as large of a rally as the first protest in April, but the message has not changed. "It's very scary what's happening to our country, especially sending innocent people to who knows where at this point in time without due process," said Sheri Swanson, a 77-year-old from Pike Creek, at the protest. "It's not the American way." This protest comes right after the Department of Homeland Security listed Delaware as a whole, New Castle County, Newark and Camden as "sanctuary jurisdictions" that are "deliberately and shamefully obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws endangering American communities." The executive order threatens any kind of federal funding or grants for any places on the list. The list was made at the direction of an executive order from President Donald Trump. Protesters outside of the airport remain committed to boycotting Avelo and Trump's immigration policies. "(It's a) very Delaware-specific thing, or we could hopefully have an economic impact on them and make them feel like it's not such a great deal for them," said Debbie Silverman, a 63-year-old from Wilmington, at the airport. "But now I'm absolutely not planning on flying them." Shane Brennan covers Wilmington and other Delaware issues. Budget airlines contributing to passenger boom at NYC-area regional airports

Traffic is really taking off at two regional airports north of New York City. Budget airlines are powering the growth in passengers. On a random Tuesday afternoon, Westchester County Airport was a busy place. Frequent flier Jill Forrester said she has noticed a big increase in passenger volume. "I have. The waiting room is always packed. There's not a lot of places to sit down. That's why we're up here in the observation tower. It's just a little bit quieter," Forrester said. Read more: Newark Airport experiences another air traffic control outage Why the boom in passengers at regional airports Airport statistics show Westchester County handled 1.5 million passengers in 2017, but in 2024 that increased to 2.3 million. At Tweed Airport in New Haven, a Hearst Connecticut Media study found passenger traffic is up tenfold since 2019. With traffic way up, Tweed is looking at a big expansion, more than doubling the current terminal space. At both airports, traffic is rising since the debut of service by budget airlines such as Avelo and Breeze. "Avelo and Breeze have built routes out of Westchester and Tweed airports to places that people want to go, mostly leisure-focused destinations, and they are charging fares that are potentially more reasonably priced than some of the other airlines that have served those cities," travel industry analyst Henry Harteveldt said. Asked for comment about passenger volume, Westchester County, which is always sensitive to complaints about airport noise, provided a statement from spokeswoman Catherine Cioffi. "While more passengers are moving through HPN, the number of enplanements hasn't increased dramatically. What we are seeing in 2025 is a shift toward larger, more efficient and quieter aircraft, meaning more people per flight, not more flights overall. This is not a surge in air traffic. This is simply smarter, more streamlined air travel. The number of planes in the sky remains stable," Cioffi said. "That said, anyone who has been to the HPN terminal knows it's time for an upgrade, which is why the county issued a Request for Proposals to modernize the terminal at Westchester County Airport. Our objective is to identify a consultant who will work closely with the county to develop distinct design concepts for consideration. Each will focus on enhancing the overall airport experience for passengers. This is not expansion. It's about being able to offer essentials: a seat, a cup of coffee and a bathroom. We are committed to a transparent and competitive process that puts the needs of our residents and travelers first. It's also worth noting that commercial flights make up only about 30% of total takeoffs at HPN," Cioffi added. There is a drawback to the regional airports, analyst says The budget airline destinations include smaller markets in Florida and hotspots such as Myrtle Beach and Charleston, South Carolina, but with limited schedules compared to major airlines Harteveldt says budget travelers need to be aware. "If your flights are delayed or cancelled, your options are going to be limited to get you to your destination, whether you are on your way to a vacation or on your way back home," Harteveldt said. Breeze is expanding aggressively in the region, also adding service at MacArthur Airport on Long Island and Stewart Airport in Orange County.
