Romanian pleads guilty to 'swatting' US lawmakers and top officials

WASHINGTON, June 2 (Reuters) - A Romanian man has pleaded guilty to participating in a years-long series of dangerous hoax phone calls and bomb threats targeting American legislators, law enforcement leaders, and government officials, the U.S. Justice Department said Monday.
In a statement, opens new tab, the department said that Thomasz Szabo, 26, who was extradited to the United States last year, admitted targeting more than 75 officials, four religious institutions, and multiple journalists in his campaign of intimidation. Officials said Szabo targeted private residences, including the homes and families of senior government officials.
Authorities say Szabo routinely phoned in bomb threats and reports of ongoing violence or hostage situations at his targets' homes or places of work, a technique called 'swatting' because it is meant to elicit the emergency deployment of heavily armed police officers.
Emails seeking comment from Szabo's lawyers were not immediately returned.
Justice officials described Szabo as the leader of a group that made a series of false reports to U.S. law enforcement, including a December 2020 threat to commit a mass-shooting at New York City synagogues and a January 2021 threat to detonate explosives at the U.S. Capitol and kill then-President-elect Joe Biden.
The department said that, in a two-month period alone, members of Szabo's gang targeted at least 25 members of Congress or their family members, six then-current or former senior U.S. federal officials, "including multiple cabinet-level officials," at least 13 then-current or former senior federal law enforcement officials, including the heads of multiple federal law enforcement agencies. Others targeted included members of the federal judiciary, state government officials, and members of the media.
It was during that time that one of Szabo's subordinates boasted of "creating massive havoc" in the United States, the department said.

Professor Linda-Gail Bekker recalls having 'shivers' when she found out that not one single woman given a revolutionary new jab in her medical trial had caught HIV. She told a global Aids summit last year that she 'literally burst into tears.' Now, she tells The Independent, that emotion has turned into an 'acute sense of despair '. The funding to get lenacapavir – a twice-yearly preventative jab that has been described as the nearest thing we have to an HIV vaccine – out to at least two million people around the globe is in question amid the turmoil accompanying Donald Trump decision to slash US aid spending. Lenacapavir stops HIV from replicating meaning that, as long as someone is on the drug, they are almost totally protected from developing the virus if they are exposed to it. Prof Bekker's study found a 96 per cent reduction in HIV overall - but in the arm of the trial looking at women and adolescent girls, there were no infections at all. Global funders, led by Pepfar and the Global Fund, in December promised to secure enough doses of the jab to protect at least two million people over three years. Its manufacturer Gilead says it will sell these at no profit, though it has not made the cost of a dose public. Gilead has also signed agreements with six pharmaceutical companies in India, Pakistan, Egypt, and the US to allow them to make generic versions of the drug in order to increase supply and drive down the cost of the jab. A significant chunk of the money to fund the doses of lenacapavir was set to come from the US-led global Aids response programme, the US President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (Pepfar). But this funding, and the future of Pepfar itself, is now uncertain. 'In all of the excitement [of the trial results] we were thinking, well, what do you do with [the] doses? What's the best way to use it?' Prof Bekker says. 'Suddenly, that is very much up in the air'. The other main funding source, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has said that it still aims to fund the doses of lenacapavir. Speaking to The Independent, however, Global Fund executive director Peter Sands tempers this by saying the success of his organisation's funding round coming up later this year would, 'determine how much scope we have for this'. The US was the Global Fund's biggest donor. Sands says that while he would 'love to say' the Global Fund could fill the gap, this would be contingent on how much money is raised from governments and private donors. "Despite all the uncertainties both around Pepfar and our own future funding, we are still very keen to deliver on the ambition,' Sands says. But, more funding than they have currently been pledged will be needed to, 'realise the full potential of lenacapavir'. At the World Health Organisation (WHO)'s annual decision-making meeting which concluded late last month, the United Nations' Aids agency (UNAIDS) called for 'urgent action to avoid millions of avoidable HIV infections and Aids-related deaths,' saying this included, 'access to long-acting injectables for HIV prevention which are almost 100 per cent effective at preventing infections' – a nod to lenacapavir. 'A missed opportunity' Prof Bekker played a crucial role in trialling the jab in eight countries including her home country of South Africa, and she was on the brink of seeing that breakthrough rolled out – it could have been in people's arms by the end of this year. Long-acting jabs like lenacapavir are not only about protecting individuals, they are a crucial part of ending the Aids pandemic, Prof Bekker explains. 'A six-monthly injectable is as close as we can get at this moment to a vaccine,' Prof Bekker says. Just like with a vaccine, it can help keep whole populations safe by stopping vulnerable people from catching the virus and then potentially spreading the virus to more people. 'You finally have something that could actually bring us to a conclusion [of the Aids crisis]. 'It just feels like such a calamitous missed opportunity,' she says. Overcoming stigma A daily preventative medicine – a combination of two drugs known collectively as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) – is already available and is very effective. But people without reliable access to healthcare find it harder to maintain a regime that involves regular pills. Girls, young women and LGBT+ people in Southern Africa can also face questioning from family members if they have packets of daily pills in their homes which indicate they are sexually active, and it can put women in relationships at higher risk of domestic violence. A six-monthly jab on the other hand can be maintained more discreetly and with less user error. Offering lenacapavir to young women – among the hardest to reach with HIV prevention - when they book into prenatal care can also prevent them from passing the virus onto their children. 'That is a good use of money, right?' Prof Bekker says. 'You're saving two infections; one of them a lifelong infection in a child that will need antivirals for the next 70 to 75 years'. 'They are young people in front of us. We can introduce them to Republican Congressmen if needed'. A State Department spokesperson said: 'Pepfar continues to support lifesaving HIV testing, care and treatment, and prevention of mother to child transmission services approved by the Secretary of State. 'As directed by the Secretary of State all other Pepfar-funded services are being reviewed for assessment of programmatic efficiencies and consistency with United States foreign policy. Pepfar, like all assistance programmes, should be reduced over time as it achieves its mission.' Ending Aids Figures previously reported by The Independent suggest Trump's slashing of foreign aid has derailed the projected end of the Aids pandemic and could lead to four million extra deaths by 2030. The latest global figures show there were 1.3 million new HIV infections and roughly 630,00 people dying from Aids around the world in 2023. Regardless of the cuts, before any doses can be made available, the drug has to be approved by regulators. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)'s decision is understood to be on track to approve the preventative jab on 19 June, followed by other national medicines regulators and the WHO. Before the cuts, an FDA approval would have marked the moment it would be full steam ahead to roll lenacapavir out to the people who need it most. But those approvals won't count for much if the money to pay for the drug and get it out to the people who need it doesn't materialise, as Prof Bekker fears. 'It does feel like this thing that could help us end the epidemic sooner is suddenly receding in the chaos'.

Friends actor Michael Rapaport has warned Jewish people that 'the cavalry ain't coming' after a horrific flamethrower attack at a pro-Israel march in Boulder, Colorado. On an episode of his podcast 'I Am Rapaport' that was released Tuesday, Rapaport, who played Phoebe Buffay's boyfriend Gary on the hit TV show Friends, spoke out about the terror attack last Sunday that left 12 demonstrators injured. 'What's going on in the world for Jewish people, what's going on in the world for people that support and believe in the right of the existence of Israel, a.k.a. Zionists, is frightening,' Rapaport said. Rapaport, who is Jewish, said, 'I don't think I have felt scared since October 7,' referring to Hamas' deadly attack on Israel in 2023. The actor said that he has spoken out for other groups in their time of need, but now no one is supporting him and his fellow Jewish and Zionist people. 'I put a f***ing black square [on social media] like a f***ing a****** during Black Lives Matter. Don't you feel like an a****** now? For putting up a black square during Black Lives Matter when nobody is coming and saying anything on our behalf.' Rapaport said that he's been traveling all over the U.S. and in Israel as an outspoken supporter of Israel for the last '500 days.' 'All the time people go, 'Why isn't anyone saying anything … Do you feel ignored, do you feel alienated?' Yes, yes, yes,' he said. The actor continued: 'I'm telling you something, Jewish people, the cavalry ain't coming. The cavalry is not coming for us. They don't give a f***.' 'It's sad, it's frustrating. You feel used. You feel manipulated. You feel like a sucker. I feel like it, too!' he added. Mohamed Sabry Soliman, a 45-year-old Egyptian national, was arrested and charged with a federal hate crime and 16 counts of attempted murder in connection with the attack. He had entered the US on a visa that expired two years ago and was subsequently granted work authorization, which expired last March. The suspect told authorities he spent a year planning the attack and specifically targeted a 'Zionist group.' Witnesses reported Soliman shouting 'Free Palestine!' before firing a 'makeshift flamethrower' and Molotov cocktails, per the FBI. The victims were participating in a 'Run For Their Lives' event in support of the release of the remaining hostages held in Gaza.

Stephen King on 'The Life of Chuck,' the end of the world and, yes, joy

Stephen King 's first editor, Bill Thompson, once said, 'Steve has a movie camera in his head.' So vividly drawn is King's fiction that it's offered the basis for some 50 feature films. For half a century, since Brian De Palma's 1976 film 'Carrie,' Hollywood has turned, and turned again, to King's books for their richness of character, nightmare and sheer entertainment. Open any of those books up at random, and there's a decent chance you'll encounter a movie reference, too. Rita Hayworth. 'The Wizard of Oz.' 'Singin' in the Rain.' Sometimes even movies based on King's books turn up in his novels. That King's books have been such fodder for the movies is owed, in part, to how much of a moviegoer their author is. 'I love anything from 'The 400 Blows' to something with that guy Jason Statham,' King says, speaking by phone from his home in Maine. 'The worst movie I ever saw was still a great way to spend an afternoon. The only movie I ever walked out on was 'Transformers.' At a certain point I said, 'This is just ridiculous.'' Over time, King has developed a personal policy in how he talks about the adaptations of his books. 'My idea is: If you can't say something nice, keep your mouth shut,' he says. The most notable exception was Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining,' which King famously called 'a big beautiful Cadillac with no engine inside.' But every now and then, King is such a fan of an adaptation that he's excited to talk about it. That's very much the case with 'The Life of Chuck,' Mike Flanagan's new adaptation of King's novella of the same name published in the 2020 collection 'If It Bleeds.' In 'The Life of Chuck,' which Neon releases in theaters Friday (nationwide June 13), there are separate storylines but the tone-setting opening is apocalyptic. The internet, like a dazed prize fighter, wobbles on its last legs before going down. California is said to be peeling away from the mainland like 'like old wallpaper.' And yet in this doomsday tale, King is at his most sincere. 'The Life of Chuck,' the book and the movie, is about what matters in life when everything else is lost. There is dancing, Walt Whitman and joy. 'In 'The Life of Chuck,' we understand that this guy's life is cut short, but that doesn't mean he doesn't experience joy,' says King. 'Existential dread and grief and things are part of the human experience, but so is joy.' Stephen King, the humanist It's telling that when King, our preeminent purveyor of horror, writes about doom times, he ends up scaling it down to a single life. While darkness and doom have, and probably always will, mark his work, King — a more playful, instinctual, genre-skipping writer than he's often credited as — 'The Life of Chuck' is a prime example of King, the humanist. 'An awful lot of people assume, because he writes so much stuff that's so scary, they kind of forget the reason his horror works so well is he's always juxtaposing it with light and with love and with empathy,' says Flanagan, who has twice before adapted King ('Doctor Sleep,' 'Gerald's Game') and is in the midst of making a 'Carrie' series for Amazon. 'You forget that 'It' isn't about the clown, it's about the kids and their friendship," adds Flanagan. ''The Stand' isn't about the virus or the demon taking over the world, it's ordinary people who have to come together and stand against a force they cannot defeat.' King, 77, has now written somewhere around 80 books, including the just released 'Never Flinch.' The mystery thriller brings back King's recent favorite protagonist, the private investigator Holly Gibney, who made her stand-alone debut in 'If It Bleeds.' It's Gibney's insecurities, and her willingness to push against them, that has kept King returning to her. 'It gave me great pleasure to see Holly grow into a more confident person,' King says. 'She never outgrows all of her insecurities, though. None of us do.' 'Never Flinch' is a reminder that King has always been less of a genre-first writer than a character-first one. He tends to fall in love with a character and follow them through thick and thin. 'I'm always happy writing. That's why I do it so much,' King says, chuckling. 'I'm a very chipper guy because I get rid of all that dark stuff in the books.' Contemporary anxieties Dark stuff, as King says, hasn't been hard to come by lately, he grants. The kind of climate change disaster found in 'The Life of Chuck,' King says, often dominates his anxieties. 'We're creeping up little by little on being the one country who does not acknowledge it's a real problem with carbon in the atmosphere,' King says. 'That's crazy. Certain right wing politicians can talk all they want about how we're saving the world for our grandchildren. They don't care about that. They care about money.' On social media, King has been a sometimes critic of President Donald Trump, whose second term has included battles with the arts, academia and public financing for PBS and NPR. Over the next four years, King predicts, 'Culture is going to go underground.' In 'Never Finch,' Holly Gibney is hired as a bodyguard by a women's rights activist whose lecture tour is being plagued by mysterious acts of violence. In the afterward of the book, King includes a tribute to 'supporters of women's right to choose who have been murdered for doing their duty.' 'I'm sure they're not going to like that,' King says of right-wing critics. The original germ for 'The Life of Chuck' had nothing to do with current events. One day in Boston, King noticed a drummer busking on Boylston Street. He had the vision of a businessman in a suit who, walking by, can't resist dancing with abandon to the drummer's beat. King, a self-acknowledged dancer (though only in private, he notes), latched onto a story that would turn on the unpredictable nature of people, tracing the inner life of that imagined passerby. In the film, he's played by Tom Hiddleston. Chuck first appears, oddly, on a billboard that haunts and confuses a local teacher (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who's struggling to get his students to care about literature or education with the possible end of the world encroaching. Sincerity for a cynical world It's a funny but maybe not coincidental irony that many of the best King adaptations, like 'Stand By Me' and 'The Shawshank Redemption," have come from the author's more warm-hearted tales. 'The Life of Chuck,' which won the People's Choice Award last fall at the Toronto International Film Festival, is after a similar spirit. When King reached out about attending the TIFF world premiere, Flanagan was shocked. The last time King had done that for one of his own adaptations was 26 years ago, for 'The Green Mile.' That movie, like 'The Shawshank Redemption' were box-office disappointments, King recalls, a fate he's hoping 'The Life of Chuck' can avoid. 'He views this movie as something that's a bit precious,' says Flanagan. 'He's said a few things to me in the past about how earnest it is, how this is a story without an ounce of cynicism. As it was being released into a cynical world, I think he felt protective of it. I think this one really means something to him.' The Stephen King industrial complex, meanwhile, keeps rolling along. Coming just this year are series of 'Welcome to Derry' and 'The Institute' and a film of 'The Long Walk.' King, himself, just finished a draft of 'Talisman 3.' If 'The Life of Chuck' has particular meaning to King, it could be because it represents something intrinsic about his own life. Chuck's small, seemingly unremarkable existence has grace and meaning because, as Whitman is quoted, he "contains multitudes' that surprise and delight him. King's fiction is evidence — heaps of it — that he does, too. 'There are some days where I sit down and I think, 'This is going to be a really good day,' and it's not, at all,' says King. 'Then other days I sit down and think to myself, 'I'm really tired and don't feel like doing this,' and then it catches fire. You never know what you're going to get.'
