Nine UT Knoxville students at risk for deportation after immigration status change

Yahoo12-04-2025

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A spokesperson for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, shared that they are aware of the status change of nine students.
Kerry Gardner, director of Media and Internal Relations with UT, explained that the Center for Global Engagement staff became aware of status changes by checking the Student Exchange Visitor System database, as the university was not notified about the changes. The listing now states, 'individuals identified in criminal records check and/or has had their VISA revoked. SEVIS record has been terminated,' according to Gardner.

'Guidance for students and former students affected by status changes is case-specific, and details on their situations are private. Our priority is to provide as much support as appropriate to each person based on their circumstances,' wrote Gardner.
Previously, Chancellor Donde Plowman said three current students and a former student who works at the university were at risk of being deported. In an internal letter sent to university staff, Plowman said the status changes took place amid Immigration and Customs Enforcement efforts to change the legal status of international students across the country.
Hundreds of students, dozens of colleges hit by Trump's visa purge: What to know
Plowman added that the university's Office of General Counsel has posted information for the campus community in case someone is approached by federal law enforcement on campus related to students.
The Hill reports that hundreds of international students are seeing their visas revoked for infractions as minor as traffic violations, while colleges are having to check immigration databases to find out whether their students are still allowed to be in the country. An Inside Higher Ed tracker reports that more than 80 colleges and universities have been impacted by the visa revocations in a wide range of locations and sizes.
In March, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that more than 300 student visas were revoked under the Trump administration, with more coming every day.

International students in Texas left in limbo

Texas has more international students than nearly every other state, per data from NAFSA, an international education nonprofit. Why it matters: The Trump administration is halting student visa interviews and revoking visas for Chinese students amid a political pressure campaign against colleges and universities and a broader immigration crackdown. By the numbers: Of all international students studying in the U.S. during the 2023-24 school year, about 8% were doing so in Texas, third behind only California (12.5%) and New York (12.1%). The big picture: The student visa pause comes amid the Trump administration's criticism of U.S. colleges and universities for failing to crack down on what it describes as heightened antisemitism as students protest Israel's actions in Gaza. The revocation of Chinese students' visas in particular is tied to concerns that their government is using them "to steal intellectual property on Beijing's behalf," a State Department official told Axios. Zoom in: The University of Texas appears to be especially exposed to the administration's crackdown. During the 2024-25 school year, nearly 2,000 undergraduates and more than 4,600 graduate students were from abroad — or about 12% of all UT-Austin students. International students represent 130 countries, with 1,394 of those students hailing from China, second only to the 1,502 from India. What they're saying: As part of standard practice, "there is ongoing communication" with international students about immigration and other matters, "providing guidance where applicable," UT spokesperson Mike Rosen tells Axios. Between the lines: The visas of at least 260 international university students in Texas — including students from Texas A&M and Texas State — were revoked by the federal government this spring, before the Trump administration reversed course and reactivated legal status. That decision came after federal judges ordered the administration to restore legal status for three people who came to Texas from India on student visas. What we're watching: UT's interim president, Jim Davis, has not made any major public pronouncements about international students and their role at the university.

Gardner said the family was only visiting and no children were hurt. 'The child did not attend the daycare at all. As a matter of fact, the daycare locked and secured,' said Gardner. Even though no one at the daycare was involved, parents were still scared. 'I got a message from my daycare saying it was on lockdown,' said Daycare Parent Tylique R. Spencer. Spencer said he was immediately concerned for his son's safety. 'First it was if my kid is safe. I mean, it's Jacksonville. A lot of stuff goes down here,' said Spencer. Earlier this year, a two-year-old boy in Jacksonville died after getting hold of a gun. 'You always have to be aware of where your fire arm is, especially if the kids are in the vicinity,' said Rod Mills, Founder of Scorched Earth Firearms Training. Mills said proper storage is crucial for everyone's safety. 'I always suggest you have a gun safe installed in your vehicle,' Mills. If you don't have one, many cars now have locks on their glove compartments or center consoles. Mills says you can properly store your firearm in those — as long as your children cannot get inside. It's not just a good idea — it's the law. Florida law says you can be charged with a crime if your child gets access to a gun that isn't properly stored. As we said, JSO did not give many details. We are working to find out if anyone will face charges because of this.
