The Cyber Crime wing of the Puducherry police arrested five persons, suspected to be key accused in a cyber fraud case, wherein ₹5.1 crore was swindled from a woman in Puducherry.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Inspector General of Police Ashok Kumar Singla said the woman complainant received a call from a mobile number recently that displayed the profile picture of her company's Managing Director.
The accused claimed that the WhatsApp number was his new contact. After gaining her trust through WhatsApp messages, he convinced the complainant that he was in an official meeting. He further claimed to be initiating a new project and directed the complainant to transfer the available funds from the business bank accounts, stressing the importance of the proposed project.
Believing his claims, the complainant transferred ₹5.1 crore to the bank accounts provided by the fraudster. After realising, she had been cheated the woman lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime police. On the direction of Senior Superintendent of Police Nara Chaitanya, a team led by Superintendent of Police S. Bascarane and Inspector B.C. Kirtty launched an investigation.
During the probe, it was found that out of the defrauded amount of ₹5.1 crore, ₹1.8 crore had been transferred to an Axis Bank account based in Kerala. The account holder was identified as Sajith, who was subsequently arrested.
Following his arrest, a special team travelled to Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and arrested four more persons, identified as Omkar Nath, Raghavendra, Shashidhar Nayak and Bavajan. Several mobile phones and internet devices used to transfer the fraudulent funds and a car was seized from the accused. Police said more people were involved in the scam and a manhunt has been launched to nab them.

Mohali: Surgeon duped of ₹90L in online trading scam

A city-based surgeon, Dr Pankaj Bhalla, has been defrauded of ₹90.93 lakh in an online trading scam that promised high returns. The cyber crime police at Phase-4 have registered a case and launched an investigation to trace the accused. Dr Bhalla, a resident of Sector-79 and employed in the medical department, said in his complaint that he began investing on February 19 after receiving an email from Team claiming to represent S&W Aubrey Capital Management Investment Funds, allegedly based in Hi-Tech City, Hyderabad. He was later contacted via WhatsApp by a man identifying himself as Anoop Mehra, who shared a trading account link and added him to a group named MK-S&W Group. Mehra frequently encouraged Bhalla to invest more by showcasing growing profits through a fake trading dashboard. Between February 19 and April 2, Dr Bhalla made nine transactions, ranging from ₹20,000 to ₹29 lakh, totaling ₹90.93 lakh. However, when he attempted to withdraw his earnings, his account was blocked and deleted. Attempts to contact the company failed and all associated phone numbers became unreachable. Realising he had been conned, Dr Bhalla approached the cyber crime police, who have registered a case under Sections 318(4), 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act. A cyber investigation team is now analysing the bank accounts and mobile numbers used in the fraud. Officials said efforts are underway to trace the digital trail and recover the stolen funds.

Beware! Hyderabad citizen traffic vigilantes on prowl, help cops issue 30k challans in five months

HYDERABAD: Breaking traffic rules? Beware. Your fellow city residents are watching you. In the last five months alone, traffic cops across the three commissionerates issued 30,000 challans based on complaints raised by vigilant residents and collected fines of Rs 1 crore. These 'tip-offs' were posted on the traffic police's social media platforms—X, WhatsApp, and Facebook. The commonly reported offences include riding without a helmet, jumping signals, and wrong parking. There are also cases of triple riding, wrong-side driving, cellphone driving, and rash driving. Each of these was accompanied by photos and videos. Some of the complaints brought to the notice of police by residents in the last 48 hours include blocking free left at Tarnaka X roads by a govt vehicle, triple riding without a helmet at Tank Bund, rude behaviour by a driver when questioned about driving in the wrong direction in Trimulgherry, and driving without a helmet while using a cellphone in Miyapur. "We have a dedicated team at the commissioner's office to monitor grievances via social media and alert officials on the ground. Recently, we noticed a surge in these complaints, especially regarding wrong parking in residential areas," said a cop. Records confirm this spike in citizen complaints. In 2024, traffic police from the three commissionerates issued 50,000 challans (of the total 15 lakh), following public complaints. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Cyberabad commissionerate limits alone contributed 44,000 challans. This helped cops raise around Rs 1.5 crore in penalties. In 2025, traffic police have already collected close to 70% of that in less than six months. The total challans issued so far this year is around 20 lakh. "Enforcement of traffic management faces limitations as the focus remains on maintaining traffic flow. That makes it challenging to monitor every violation, despite the CCTV coverage. Therefore, citizens' assistance is valuable in penalising offenders," said Rahul Hegde BK, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Hyderabad Commissionerate. He added: "In the last 17 months, we raised ₹36 lakh with their help. Upon receiving complaints, our team verifies authenticity by contacting complainants and reviewing nearby CCTV footage before generating the challan."
