As repeaters corner 7.5% quota, cracking NEET gets stiffer
Madurai/Trichy: With competition going up for seats under 7.5% quota for govt school students who appear for national eligibility-cum-entrance test every year, cracking the test and securing an MBBS seat remains a dream for most students in their first attempt.
Most students scoring high remain repeaters, thanks often to private or special free coaching. Since proper training at school levels remains a challenge, educationists and teachers have called for a comprehensive plan and guidance at the school level for those who wish to tackle NEET.
According to official data, in 2021, a maximum of 17 students enrolled from Madurai had got MBBS/BDS seats. However, the number dipped to nine and seven last year.
In Trichy, the number of govt students qualifying has dipped. In 2023, a total of 106 qualified for counselling, of which four got seats whereas last year, six out of 134 who qualified got seats. This year, 39 students crossed the 113-mark threshold from the 209 who appeared for NEET, as of Wednesday.
S Vennila Devi, Madurai district coordinator of NEET coaching, said students are able to considerably perform better due to the special coaching given by teachers.

This year, NEET topper among govt school students under 7.5% quota is Priyanka of Y Othakadai Government Model GHSS with a score of 466 marks, while for non-7.5% quota, Kannika with a score of 539, from the same school, topped. In Trichy, four students scored above 300 marks, all of whom are repeat candidates.
The highest score among govt and aided school students in Trichy district this year is 221 for a first-time NEET candidate.
Officials in Madurai said NEET coaching classes (online or offline) for govt school students lack the structure or regularity of a private coaching centre. "The primary focus of govt school teachers is to have students pass and score high in Class XI and XII board exams. NEET comes second. Many students start their NEET preparation properly only when Class XII board exams end," said the headmaster of a govt higher secondary school, who did not wish to be named.
R Murali, secretary, Save Higher Education Movement, Tamil Nadu, pointed out that while free coaching introduced in govt schools is helpful for those from poor backgrounds, it creates division. "Apart from the rural and urban divide, govt school teachers lack the necessary training to provide guidance and prepare students for tackling competitive exams like NEET through their regular classroom teaching. If the govt is genuinely interested in helping govt school students crack NEET, it should appoint efficient and qualified teachers for it," he said.
Officials in Trichy said the govt has not yet announced the cut-off for 7.5% horizontal reservation for govt school students this year. "The counselling process should be more lenient this year, as the overall cut-off is lower due to the difficulty level of the exam," a district education official said. "The govt is planning to introduce weekly coaching classes starting July, with one centre in each of the blocks. Repeaters tending to perform better shows that with practice it gets better," the official added.

J-K students evacuated from Iran flag poor bus conditions during journey back home; CM Omar Abdullah responds; promises deluxe coaches
NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah has assured students evacuated from Iran that deluxe buses will be arranged for their travel from Delhi to J&K following complaints about the poor quality of buses initially provided. Around 110 Indian nationals, including 90 students from Jammu and Kashmir, were evacuated from conflict-affected Iran on Wednesday. The group was first taken to Armenia, then flown to Doha, before arriving in Delhi early on Thursday. Several students expressed their gratitude to the Indian government for the evacuation, but criticised the buses arranged by the Jammu and Kashmir administration for the final leg of their journey. Some described the transport as uncomfortable and ill-suited after days of travel. In a post on social media platform X, the chief minister's office said: 'The Chief Minister has taken note of the request of the students evacuated from Iran regarding the quality of buses arranged to transport them from Delhi to J&K.' The statement added that the Resident Commissioner had been tasked with coordinating with the Jammu & Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) to ensure 'proper deluxe buses' are provided. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트 29만원 이벤트 임플란트 더 알아보기 Undo Abdullah also shared the post from his official handle, signalling a personal commitment to addressing the concerns. US resumes visas for foreign students but demands access to social media accounts
The U.S. State Department said Wednesday it is restarting the suspended process for foreigners applying for student visas but all applicants will now be required to unlock their social media accounts for government review. The department said consular officers will be on the lookout for posts and messages that could be deemed hostile to the United States, its government, culture, institutions or founding principles. In a notice made public Wednesday, the department said it had rescinded its May suspension of student visa processing but said new applicants who refuse to set their social media accounts to "public" and allow them to be reviewed may be rejected. It said a refusal to do so could be a sign they are trying to evade the requirement or hide their online activity. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like IELTS Cheat Sheet: Grab Your Free Tips! IELTS Prep Pro Learn More Undo The Trump administration last month temporarily halted the scheduling of new visa interviews for foreign students hoping to study in the U.S. while preparing to expand the screening of their activity on social media, officials said. (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) Students around the world have been waiting anxiously for U.S. consulates to reopen appointments for visa interviews, as the window left to book their travel and make housing arrangements narrows ahead of the start of the school year. Live Events On Wednesday afternoon, a 27-year-old Ph.D. student in Toronto was able to secure an appointment for a visa interview next week. The student, a Chinese national, hopes to travel to the U.S. for a research internship that would start in late July. "I'm really relieved," said the student, who spoke on condition of being identified only by his surname, Chen, because he was concerned about being targeted. "I've been refreshing the website couple of times every day." Students from China, India, Mexico and the Philippines have posted on social media sites that they have been monitoring visa booking websites and closely watching press briefings of the State Department to get any indication of when appointment scheduling might resume. In reopening the visa process, the State Department also told consulates to prioritize students hoping to enroll at colleges where foreigners make up less than 15% of the student body, a U.S. official familiar with the matter said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to detail information that has not been made public. Foreign students make up more than 15% of the total student body at almost 200 U.S. universities, according to an Associated Press analysis of federal education data from 2023. Most are private universities, including all eight Ivy League schools. But that criteria also includes 26 public universities, including the University of Illinois and Pennsylvania State University. Looking only at undergraduate students, foreign students make up more than 15% of the population at about 100 universities, almost all of them private. International students in the U.S. have been facing increased scrutiny on several fronts. In the spring, the Trump administration revoked permission to study in the U.S. for thousands of students, including some involved only in traffic offenses, before abruptly reversing course. The government also expanded the grounds on which foreign students can have their legal status terminated. As part of a pressure campaign targeting Harvard University , the Trump administration has moved to block foreign students from attending the Ivy League school, which counts on international students for tuition dollars and a quarter of its enrollment. Trump has said Harvard should cap its foreign enrollment at 15%. This latest move to vet students' social media, the State Department said Wednesday, "will ensure we are properly screening every single person attempting to visit our country." In internal guidance sent to consular officers, the department said they should be looking for "any indications of hostility toward the citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles of the United States." Jameel Jaffer, executive director at the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, said the new policy evokes the ideological vetting of the Cold War, when prominent artists and intellectuals were excluded from the U.S. "This policy makes a censor of every consular officer, and it will inevitably chill legitimate political speech both inside and outside the United States," Jaffer said. The Trump administration also has called for 36 countries to commit to improving vetting of travelers or face a ban on their citizens visiting the United States. A weekend diplomatic cable sent by the State Department says the countries have 60 days to address U.S. concerns or risk being added to a travel ban that now includes 12 nations.

Unified pension scheme revised: Central employees to receive OPS-like gratuity; Rs 10k minimum pension
Representative image NEW DELHI: All Central government employees covered under the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) will receive retirement and death gratuity benefits similar to the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), Union minister of state for personnel Jitendra Singh said on Wednesday. The inclusion of death-cum-retirement gratuity in UPS, a long-pending demand of a large section of Central government staffers, is expected to encourage many covered under National Pension System (NPS) to opt for it. Singh, who was addressing a press conference in Delhi on the 'transformational' journey of ministry of personnel, public grievances and pensions over the last 11 years, said the assured payout under UPS 'reflects the government's commitment to ensure social security for all categories of employees under the NPS'. The department of financial services had notified UPS on January 24, 2025, with the aim of providing Central government employees covered under NPS, a guaranteed pension similar to OPS but with a contribution model like NPS. Employees covered under NPS can switch to UPS, ensuring broader pension coverage. The scheme guarantees a pension amount of 50 per cent of the average basic salary earned over 12 months before retirement for those with at least 25 years of service. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? In the event of the pensioner's death, their family will receive 60 per cent of the last pension drawn. Employees contribute 10% of their basic salary and DA, while the government contributes 18.5 per cent, a higher share than 14 per cent under NPS. An order issued by the department of pensions and pensioners' welfare (DoPPW) on Wednesday clarified that central government employees covered under the UPS shall also be eligible for the benefit of retirement gratuity and death gratuity under the provisions of the Central Civil Service (Payment of Gratuity under National Pension System) Rules, 2021. A second order specified options to avail benefits under OPS on death of a government servant covered under UPS, during service or his discharge from service on account of invalidation or disability. 'The order gives an option to revert to OPS in case of death in service. It is progressive in nature and addresses the clarifications being sought by employees,' DoPPW Secretary V Srinivas said, adding that 'UPS pensioners will be eligible for Rs 25 lakh gratuity also'. President of the All India NPS Employees Federation, Manjeet Singh Patel, welcomed the order, saying that the inclusion of death-cum-retirement gratuity in UPS will remove all the misconceptions of the employees and encourage them to opt for UPS, said PTI. In the case of the death of a government servant while in service, the last option exercised by the deceased employee before his death shall be treated as final, and the family shall have no right to revise the option.
