England name squad for India Test series opener at Headingley
England have named a 14-player squad for the first match of the Rothesay Test Series against India, which is set to begin on June 20 at Headingley in Leeds.
Ben Stokes will lead the squad as captain and Surrey bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton returns to the Test line-up for the first time since earning his sole cap against New Zealand at Headingley in June 2022.
The 31-year-old is still under close medical review after breaking his right little finger during the first One-Day International against the West Indies at Edgbaston last week.
Durham seamer Brydon Carse, as well as Warwickshire's Jacob Bethell and Chris Woakes, were recalled after featuring in England's Test tour of New Zealand in December.

Australia's Starc comfortable with IPL pullout regardless of repercussion
MELBOURNE: Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc is comfortable with his decision to leave the Indian Premier League (IPL) following the India-Pakistan clashes last month regardless of any repercussions, the 35-year-old said. The IPL was suspended on May 9 in the wake of hostilities between the two. It resumed on May 17 after the nuclear-armed neighbours agreed to a ceasefire. While most IPL foreign recruits returned to complete their franchise commitment, the Delhi Capitals duo of Starc and fellow Australian Jake Fraser-McGurk took no further part in the 10-team league. 'I'm comfortable with my decision and how I felt about the whole situation and how it was handled,' Starc told the Sydney Morning Herald on Friday. 'Time will tell with repercussions or how it looks with guys that didn't return. But I've had my questions and concerns leading into that game, and obviously we saw what happened, which played a part in my decision.' Starc was in Dharamsala, near the Pakistan border, for Delhi's May 9 match against the Punjab Kings. The contest was abandoned midway through, although league organisers blamed it on a floodlights failure. 'Jake and I chose not to (return). So it was a very individual decision, and I'm happy to live with whatever comes of that,' Starc said. He opted out of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan earlier this year citing personal reasons and has skipped the IPL more than once to preserve himself for international cricket. Marsh back to skipper Australia in Windies T20s, Cummins and Starc rested The left-arm quick said he withdrew from the remainder of the IPL because of the extraordinary circumstances. 'I'm still heavily committed to the Delhi group, and I'm not someone that's gone into tournaments and pulled out after being picked up in an auction or whatever that looks like,' Starc said. 'These are different circumstances … I had a discussion back home then came to a decision, and whatever comes from that I'm comfortable with that and we move forward.'

Overton, Bethell in Eng squad for India Test
Jamie Overton was on Thursday handed a surprise recall to the England squad for the first Test against India while Jacob Bethell's return creates a top-order selection headache. Overton has been a regular in England's white-ball set-up but won his solitary Test cap against New Zealand in 2022, taking two wickets and hitting an unexpected 97 with the bat. It is unclear whether the all-rounder will be fully fit to take the field at Headingley on June 20, having broken a finger during the recent one-day internationals against the West Indies. The England and Wales Cricket Board said the 31-year-old will be "assessed and reviewed daily" by its medical team. Overton's Surrey teammate Gus Atkinson is not fit after injuring his hamstring in England's Test win against Zimbabwe last month. England have brought back pacemen Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse, both of whom missed the early part of the season with injury problems. Woakes could edge out Sam Cook, who retains his place in the squad after a quiet debut against Zimbabwe. Rising star Bethell is back from Indian Premier League duty after winning the tournament with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The 21-year-old impressed during his debut Test series in New Zealand in November and December, scoring three half-centuries at number three, and averages 52. Vice-captain Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley were thought to be under pressure from Bethell's reintroduction but the pair both scored hundreds against Zimbabwe. The Test at Headingley is the first in a five-match series. England squad: Ben Stokes (capt), Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wkt), Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.

Smith replaces Salt in England squad for West Indies T20s
LONDON: England have called up Jamie Smith to their squad for the three-match Twenty20 series against West Indies as a replacement for Phil Salt, who has left the team on paternity leave, the country's cricket board (ECB) said on Thursday. England completed a 3-0 sweep of West Indies in their one-day international series on Tuesday, with Smith scoring a rapid half century in their victory in the final match. 'Salt, who is taking time away on paternity leave following the birth of his child earlier this week, will now spend time at home. He has been replaced in the squad by Surrey batter Jamie Smith,' the ECB said in a statement. The first T20 match takes place at the Riverside Ground in Durham on Friday.
