Rs10bn defamation case against IK put off
LAHORE: A sessions court adjourned the proceedings in the Rs 10 billion defamation case of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif after the lawyer of former PTI chairman Imran Khan did not conclude cross-examination of Shehbaz Sharif.
Earlier Shahbaz Sharif and his counsel appeared before the court through via a video link. Responding to the questions of Imran Khan, the prime minister clarified that he considers himself a public servant which is why he used the term 'public service' in first paragraph of his affidavit.
He rejected the allegation that every word of his affidavit was false or that the affidavit itself was untrue. He also rejected an allegation that the charges leveled against Imran Khan in his affidavit were false. PM Shehbaz also told the court that he did not remember if the Supreme Court issued its verdict in the Panama Papers case on April 20, 2017.
To another query of the defendant's counsel, he said it was incorrect to suggest that he filed the defamation suit against the PTI former chairman after the Supreme Court's decision in the Panama Papers case.
Shehbaz also rejected a claim that he did not attach a receipt of sending a legal notice to the defendant before filing the suit. He stated that it was also untrue that no notice was served to the defendant prior to filing the suit. In his defamation suit filed in 2017, Shehbaz said Imran Khan leveled baseless allegations on him. He sought a decree for recovery of Rs10 billion as compensation from the defendant for publication of defamatory content.

NEC approves national development budget worth Rs4.22trn for next fiscal year
The National Economic Council (NEC) on Wednesday unanimously approved six-agenda items, including national development budget worth Rs4.224 trillion for the next fiscal year (FY26), Radio Pakistan reported. The approval was granted at the NEC meeting held in Islamabad with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the chair and with all the four provincial chief ministers of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan in the presence. It was told that Rs1 trillion would be earmarked for the federal and Rs2.87 trillion for the provincial development projects. Unregistered taxpayers: 4% 'further sales tax' to be abolished The forum also approved macroeconomic framework and targets for the next fiscal year. The council directed relevant ministries, provinces, and government institutions to work in collaboration with the Ministry of Planning to achieve the targets set in the proposed annual plan for 2025-2026. The development projects would prioritise health, education, infrastructure, the water sector, and housing, Radio Pakistan reported. The NEC gave approval to the 13th five-year development plan and the Uraan Pakistan Framework, it said. As per the details, a third-party monitoring report on the annual National Development Programme was presented, and the meeting decided that future project planning should incorporate the recommendations of the report. The NEC also approved a gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 2.7% for the outgoing fiscal year and a projected growth rate of 4.2% for the next financial year. During the meeting, revised indicators regarding the performance of the economy in outgoing fiscal year 2024-25 were presented. The meeting was informed that Rs3.483 trillion was being spent on the annual national development, of which Rs1.100 trillion was share of the federation and Rs2.383 trillion was the share of provinces. Budget talks with IMF successful: PM Shehbaz The meeting was told that remittances increased by Rs30.9% from July 2024 to April 2025 and the current account balance remained positive for the first time. The fiscal deficit in the year 2024-25 further decreased to 2.6% of the GDP, while the primary balance remained 3% of the GDP after increase. The policy rate gradually decreased to 11% due to government policies, while loans given for private sector development increased to Rs681 billion from July 2024 to May 2025. The volume of GDP in 2024-25 will be Rs114 trillion.

Security forces eliminate 14 militants in North Waziristan operation: ISPR
Listen to article At least 14 militants allegedly affiliated with Fitna al-Khawarij, a group identified as an Indian proxy, were killed in intellegence-based operations in North Waziristan between June 2 and 3, it emerged on Wednesday. According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), security forces conducted operations in Dhatta Khel area of North Waziristan. "After a fierce exchange of fire, 14 militants affiliated with the Indian-sponsored group were neutralized." Sanitization operations are ongoing in the area to ensure the complete elimination of any remaining threats, said the military's media wing. "Pakistan's armed forces remain resolute in their mission to eradicate Indian-sponsored terrorism and restore lasting peace across the country," the statement added. 'With the professional capability of our security forces, we will uproot the monster of terrorism once and for all.' According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior, the move stems from 'the involvement of some organizations and groups in terrorist activities in Balochistan, which are detrimental to Islamic faith, the sovereignty of Pakistan, and its customary traditions'. The notification further stated that the new designation is intended to reflect 'the true nature and ideology' of these groups and their 'nefarious designs' sponsored by India. 'All government entities are directed to start the above practice immediately,' the notification said, underscoring a concerted effort to reframe the narrative around insurgent violence in the province. The announcement came after Islamabad accused India of escalating indirect aggression after what he described as its defeat in a recent security operation dubbed "Marka-e-Haq'.
