Bursa Malaysia extends gains on improved US political outlook

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia continued its upward momentum, supported by improved market sentiment amid growing optimism over political developments in the United States.
At 5pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) ended 0.55 per cent higher, rising 8.37 points to finish at 1,528.16, compared to its previous close of 1,519.79.
The broader market also saw a positive tone, with 509 gainers outpacing 406 losers, while 495 counters remained unchanged.
UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan aid cyclical sectors on Bursa Malaysia, especially financial, industrial, and consumer-related counters are making a strong rebound.
"These sectors, which tend to benefit from lower interest rates and improved economic sentiment, responded positively to the increased likelihood of a more accommodative US monetary policy stance," he said.
He noted that the shifting outlook in the United States could offer Malaysia a twofold advantage, boosting investor confidence and attracting increased capital inflows.
"A weaker US dollar and dovish Fed would support the ringgit, enhance import purchasing power, and draw foreign investors back into Malaysian equities and bonds. However, challenges remain.
"The looming threat of the 24 per cent reciprocal US tariff on Malaysian exports, though temporarily suspended, continues to weigh on export-driven sectors," he said.

Pan Merchant sees opportunities in wastewater treatment, sustainable fuel sectors

PETALING JAYA: ACE Market newcomer Pan Merchant Bhd, a provider of solid-liquid filtration solutions, is prioritising emerging industries such as wastewater treatment and sustainable fuel to drive business growth and expand untapped markets. Managing director Wong Voon Ten said the company sees rising demand for sustainable fuel solutions from major energy players, driven by the global push towards decarbonisation and cleaner energy sources. 'In Malaysia and across the Asia-Pacific region, we also see significant opportunities in water treatment projects, especially as governments and water service providers continue to increase capital expenditure to upgrade water infrastructure. 'On top of that, we are actively tendering for projects to sustain our earnings growth. 'Currently, our tender book has grown to a substantial level, with more than half derived from the potable water and wastewater treatment industry, while the remainder comprises projects from edible oil, sustainable fuel, and other industries,' he said at the company's listing ceremony on Bursa Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur today. Wong said the company remains committed to its core strength in the edible oil industry. 'As a trusted and irreplaceable partner to our end-users, we are recognised for our consistent quality and reliability, and we will continue to play a vital role in supporting refineries and processing operations. We are also focused on expanding our presence in strategic regions where edible oil production is critical,' he added. Wong emphasised the significant potential and growing demand for solid-liquid filtration solutions in the water treatment and sustainable fuel industries, expressing confidence in the group's ability to secure projects in such industries, backed by its 38-year track record of product quality and reliability. As of April 30, the group's potential project pipeline spans key industries, with the largest portion coming from the potable water and wastewater treatment segment, followed by projects in edible oil, sustainable fuel, mining, food processing, and other industrial segments. Pan Merchant's share price opened at 23.5 sen compared to the initial price offering (IPO) price of 27 sen per share. It closed at 23 sen, 4 sen or 14.8% below the IPO price, on 5.576 million shares traded. The company's IPO entailed a public issue of 232.2 million new shares and an 18 million offer-for-sale shares, at an issue price of 27 sen per share, representing 27.3% of the enlarged share capital. The overall value of the IPO is RM67.6 million, with Pan Merchant receiving RM62.7 million and the offeror receiving the remaining RM4.9 million. Out of the total proceeds of RM62.7 million, RM28 million will be used for capital expenditure on manufacturing plants, including the acquisition of machinery, equipment, and tools, as well as the renovation of its manufacturing facilities. A further RM7 million will be allocated for product development, and the remaining RM27.7 million for business expansion, working capital, and defraying of listing expenses. Pan Merchant plans to use part of its IPO proceeds to acquire advanced computer numerical control and robotic welding machines, which are expected to enhance production efficiency, to meet the growing demand for filtration equipment and replacement parts both locally and internationally. As of May 6, the group's order book stood at RM69.6 million, comprising orders for filtration equipment, replacement parts, and steel works. The order book is expected to be fulfilled within the next 12 months. Ministry to hold carnival with film premieres, anti-scam movie launch

Onn Norshal (centre) expressed confidence towards Susan's (second right) property developments and is planning to replicate the successful business model in Benoni in Kinarut Palm City. PAPAR (June 26): The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living will be organizing a grand multi-day carnival starting July 16 at the 10Star Cinemas and Majestic Ballroom here at Parklane City. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor and the Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali are expected to officiate at the opening ceremony of the event, which is poised to attract over 1,000 attendees. In conjunction with the carnival, 10Star Cinemas at Parklane City will hold a nationwide premiere of the highly anticipated Malaysian film 'Impak Maksima 2' on July 16. Additionally, a launch ceremony will be held for an anti-scam movie titled 'Polis Action Silent Code', which is done in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM). 10Star Cinemas Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Onn Norshal Hamzah shared the exciting news today with WSG Group managing director Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen. 10Star Cinemas Sdn Bhd is the co-organizer for the carnival. Onn Norshal also invited Susan as special guest for the series of carnival activities on July 16. The event will feature stalls both inside and outside the ballroom, as well as a display of sports cars to hype up the premiere of 'Impak Maksima 2'. 'The Chief Minister, minister, officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, PDRM, Papar folks and media will be attending the event.' He said all 500 seats across six halls of the cinema have been reserved to host Armizan's supporters and Papar residents. The programme and carnival activities are expected to draw more than 1,000 people, making it one of the liveliest events in Papar. Onn Norshal disclosed that his team will be having a meeting with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to discuss details of the programme. Meanwhile, Susan is delighted that the cinema and ballroom have driven more people and activities to Parklane City. She believed that the grand carnival will make Parklane City a hotspot for Paparians. She also pledged full support for the event, including providing more parking spaces and necessary services to ensure the carnival is a memorable experience for the people of Papar. On another note, Onn Norshal said Parklane City has become a renowned township not only in Kuala Lumpur, but also Indonesia, thanks to Susan's efforts. 'In fact, an Indonesian film distributor has now requested to launch their upcoming horror film at 10Star Cinemas in Papar,' he said, after returning from a trip from Indonesia. He noted that their previous launch of the true story-based Indonesian horror film 'Vina' at the cinema has received overwhelming response, leaving a strong impression on the Indonesian film company. As a result, they have requested another launch event to be held at 10Star Cinemas in Parklane City. Since incorporating the Majestic Ballroom with support from developer Susan, Onn Norshal said the Parklane City model has received widespread praise and is now a benchmark for the company's future developments. He added that 10Star Cinemas currently has six cinemas across Sabah, with Tawau leading in revenue, but Benoni's outlet is rapidly climbing and is expected to become the top-performing cinema in Sabah by year-end. 'We're already seeing over 3,000 weekend admissions, which is a fantastic result,' he said. He said the success of the Papar model has boosted the company's confidence. Therefore, Onn Norshal announced that 10Star Cinemas will expand into the newly developed Kinarut Palm City, another project by WSG Group, and create an upgraded version of its cinema entertainment complex. He added that 10Star Cinemas has invested around RM5 million for its project in Papar, and the company plans to invest RM7 million in Kinarut. In addition to a cinema and banquet hall, the new development will include a café, bookstore, and other related outlets to create a more comprehensive wellness and leisure entertainment hub. Furthermore, he said the facilities at the Majestic Ballroom in Benoni will be continuously upgraded, to provide the people of Papar with a better event venue and services. Onn Norshal revealed that demand for venue rentals at the Majestic Ballroom is overwhelming, with weekends almost fully booked. There are already customers who have booked for September, October, and even November, he said. He said the company actively collects customers' feedback to improve the interior facilities of the ballroom. He said curtains, air conditioning units, heat-insulating window film, and additional lighting are being installed to improve the experience for clients.

Malaysia Launches Full-Scale Startup ASEAN Platform

PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA - Media OutReach Newswire - 26 June 2025 - Malaysia today launched the Startup ASEAN platform, marking the full-scale rollout of a bold, unified digital gateway to connect and empower startups across ASEAN. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and executed by Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd (Cradle), the platform's regional launch underscores Malaysia's commitment under its 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship to fostering inclusive innovation and economic dynamism across the region. Unlike the earlier pre-launch phase, this official launch represents a fully operational rollout, equipped with critical capabilities to serve the ASEAN innovation ecosystem. The Startup ASEAN platform is designed as a comprehensive one-stop hub, offering startups direct access to regional market opportunities, funding, investor networks, talent development and ecosystem insights. YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang, Minister of MOSTI, said 'Malaysia is honored to chair ASEAN in 2025 and take the lead in building a truly integrated and empowered regional startup ecosystem. The Startup ASEAN platform is more than a digital gateway, it is a strategic enabler designed through collaboration with all ASEAN Member States to address fragmented access to market, funding, talent and data. This launch marks the first major deliverable under the ASEAN Startup Technology Ignite 2025, and I would like to commend Cradle for its focal role in driving this initiative with all other ASEAN Member States. Through this platform, we are not only unlocking new opportunities for collaboration across region but also creating greater access for Malaysian startups to expand, scale and thrive in ASEAN and beyond,' continued YB Chang. 'Today we witness the official launch of Startup ASEAN-a transformative initiative designed to serve as the centralised hub for all startups across our region. By seamlessly connecting entrepreneurs, investors, government institutions, and ecosystem builders across our Member States, this platform embodies ASEAN's unwavering commitment to deepening regional integration while unlocking unprecedented opportunities through technology and innovation,' said H.E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN. Norman Matthieu Vanhaecke, Group Chief Executive Officer of Cradle, emphasised 'Cradle is proud to lead this effort and contribute to ASEAN's growth through innovation. The platform is beyond technology itself. It is about creating opportunities within the startup ecosystem, strengthening partnerships and unlocking the potential of our ASEAN startups. In addition to the regional database, the platform will host regional programmes aimed at strengthening cross-border collaboration among all ASEAN Member States and dialogue partners such as South Korea and China,' continued Norman. The ASEAN Startup Initiative, approved in 2023, appointed Cradle under MOSTI's mandate to lead its implementation. The initiative focuses on developing startup friendly policies, enhancing ecosystem readiness and driving impactful regional programmes and partnerships. As ASEAN Chair in 2025, Malaysia's leadership under the ASEAN Technology Startup Ignite programme signals a strategic move to position the country as a regional innovation hub. The multi-phased implementation includes: Phase 1, 2024: Development and pre-launch of the Startup ASEAN platform, Phase 2, 2025: Launch of Startup ASEAN platform, ASEAN startup programmes, capacity-building efforts and Startup ASEAN Summit Phase 3, 2026 onwards: Establishment of the ASEAN Centre of Excellence for early-stage startups. The hybrid launch event featured an immersive Startup ASEAN video tour, highlighting unique startup success stories and cultural diversity from all member states. Coinciding with the launch, Cradle hosted the regional market access session, ASEAN CrossConnect, matching 10 successful global mentors from ASEAN countries with startups from all over the region. Cradle will continue working closely with all ASEAN Member States to enhance the platform's value, ensuring it delivers meaningful impact through improved access to markets, investment opportunities and knowledge exchange.
