Experts call for dedicated two-wheeler lanes, stricter traffic law enforcement

experts on Friday emphasised the need for dedicated lanes for two-wheelers and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to enhance rider safety and reduce accidents. Addressing an event here, Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) President Rohit Baluja said electric two-wheelers are about 44 per cent of the total two-wheelers in the country.

"What needs to be done is have dedicated driving lanes for them, this will help in rider safety and avoid crashes as they are the most vulnerable road users along with pedestrians," he said.
Baluja said India accounts for the highest number of fatal road accidents with 4.8 lakh road crashes each year resulting in 1.8 lakh deaths.

Kolkata: What was once a humble pedal-driven, three-wheeled, slow-moving vehicle offering last-mile connectivity has now transformed into a speedy, silent, and unregulated form of public transport in Salt Lake. Residents say it is fast turning into a public safety hazard . The death of a 72-year-old woman and her dog in the BL Block neighbourhood, after they were knocked down by a speeding retrofitted mechanised rickshaw outside their home, left locals alarmed and angry. "She was simply walking her dog outside her home. The rickshaw sped in from the side lane and knocked her down. It didn't even stop," said Biswajit Mondal, who witnessed the accident. "We are trying to track the driver, but the lack of registration and proper identification makes it extremely difficult. We regularly undertake awareness campaigns asking them to slow down and be more cautious on the road," an officer said. In July 2024, a man visiting his daughter in Salt Lake was hit by a similar vehicle near Central Park, and died after two weeks of battling serious injuries. With low investment and high returns, the trend is growing rapidly. "They're technically illegal, but no one's stopping them. We haven't received any clear instruction on how to deal with these vehicles," an officer said."Though the municipality announced a registration drive, there's been no visible follow-up," said Patanjali Bhattacharya from AL Block. Some, like Saumitree Mukherjee from CJ Block, stress the need for better monitoring. "These rickshaws are silent and I constantly fear getting hit from behind," said Deepali Nandi from GA Block. NEW DELHI: The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a new semiconductor plant in Jewar , Uttar Pradesh. The plant, to be set up by the HCL-Foxconn joint venture, will produce display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, and cars under the " India Semiconductor Mission ." "The Cabinet has approved a sixth semiconductor plant that will be set up in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. It is a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn to manufacture display driver chips. These chips control the quality and format of the content displayed on screen. It is a very advanced technology that is being set up," Information and broadcasting minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said while briefing the media on the Cabinet decision. "What we understand is that once this unit is there, then the display panel plant will also come to India. This will meet 40 per cent of India's capacity. It is a large plant. It will also meet the requirements of Foxconn for the rest of the world," he added. Sixth Semiconductor unit The newly approved plant is a joint venture between Indian tech giant HCL and global electronics manufacturer Foxconn. It will be located near Jewar Airport in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region of Uttar Pradesh. Tata Altroz facelift variant-wise features, engine options explained
Tata Motors is all set to launch the new and updated Tata Altroz facelift premium hatchback in the Indian market. The facelift brings fresh styling, a revamped interior, and more features. Also, this is the first big update to the premium hatchback since it launched back in January 2020. The new Altroz will continue to compete with the Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, and Toyota Glanza. Bookings for the updated hatchback are expected to open soon, with deliveries likely to commence shortly after the official launch. The new Altroz facelift will retain the same powertrain options as the outgoing version, including an 88 hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine available with a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission; a 74 hp CNG variant with a 5-speed manual; and a 90 hp, 1.5-litre turbo diesel paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
