experts on Friday emphasised the need for dedicated lanes for two-wheelers and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to enhance rider safety and reduce accidents. Addressing an event here, Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) President Rohit Baluja said electric two-wheelers are about 44 per cent of the total two-wheelers in the country.

"What needs to be done is have dedicated driving lanes for them, this will help in rider safety and avoid crashes as they are the most vulnerable road users along with pedestrians," he said.
Baluja said India accounts for the highest number of fatal road accidents with 4.8 lakh road crashes each year resulting in 1.8 lakh deaths.

The government's top priorities are road safety, expansion of safe highways, vehicle safety, and bolstering electric vehicles, he added.
International Road Federation(IRF) president Emeritus K K Kapila said two-wheelers are the lifeline of major cities in the country, despite improvements in public transport.

Executive Advisor Harjeet Singh said most two-wheeler riders know that flouting traffic rules can lead to accidents, they still choose to violate rules. What is needed, he stressed, is a change in mindset, better education, and strict enforcement of traffic laws.

Fast, silent & unregulated, Salt Lake e-rickshaws a safety hazard: Locals

Kolkata: What was once a humble pedal-driven, three-wheeled, slow-moving vehicle offering last-mile connectivity has now transformed into a speedy, silent, and unregulated form of public transport in Salt Lake. Residents say it is fast turning into a public safety hazard . The death of a 72-year-old woman and her dog in the BL Block neighbourhood, after they were knocked down by a speeding retrofitted mechanised rickshaw outside their home, left locals alarmed and angry. "She was simply walking her dog outside her home. The rickshaw sped in from the side lane and knocked her down. It didn't even stop," said Biswajit Mondal, who witnessed the accident. "We are trying to track the driver, but the lack of registration and proper identification makes it extremely difficult. We regularly undertake awareness campaigns asking them to slow down and be more cautious on the road," an officer said. In July 2024, a man visiting his daughter in Salt Lake was hit by a similar vehicle near Central Park, and died after two weeks of battling serious injuries. The spike in accidents is linked to the growing popularity of retrofitted mechanised rickshaws , which now number more than 450 across the township. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo Fitted with a 375W motor and four 20Ah rechargeable batteries, these rickshaws can hit speeds up to 18 kmph — more than double that of a conventional cycle rickshaw. "These rickshaws are silent and too fast for narrow lanes," said Parama Roy from HA while these vehicles resemble factory-built e-rickshaws, they fall in a legal vacuum. According to a 2015 Union ministry notification, e-rickshaws must be built by certified manufacturers, registered with the transport authority, and driven only by certified operators. Mechanised rickshaws in Salt Lake meet none of these conditions. Many of these retrofits are done in informal garages in areas like Baguiati and Barasat, where traditional cycle rickshaws are upgraded at a cost of Rs 55,000 to 75,000. With low investment and high returns, the trend is growing rapidly. "They're technically illegal, but no one's stopping them. We haven't received any clear instruction on how to deal with these vehicles," an officer said."Though the municipality announced a registration drive, there's been no visible follow-up," said Patanjali Bhattacharya from AL Block. Some, like Saumitree Mukherjee from CJ Block, stress the need for better monitoring. "These rickshaws are silent and I constantly fear getting hit from behind," said Deepali Nandi from GA Block. "They've just thrown in electric motors without upgrading brakes, so they go fast but can't stop safely," said Tarun Sarkar of BE Block.(Inputs from Purba Majumder, Shreya Gupta & Prarthana Kar)

India Semiconductor Mission: All you need to know about Centre's bold leap to become global microchip hub

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a new semiconductor plant in Jewar , Uttar Pradesh. The plant, to be set up by the HCL-Foxconn joint venture, will produce display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, and cars under the " India Semiconductor Mission ." "The Cabinet has approved a sixth semiconductor plant that will be set up in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. It is a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn to manufacture display driver chips. These chips control the quality and format of the content displayed on screen. It is a very advanced technology that is being set up," Information and broadcasting minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said while briefing the media on the Cabinet decision. "What we understand is that once this unit is there, then the display panel plant will also come to India. This will meet 40 per cent of India's capacity. It is a large plant. It will also meet the requirements of Foxconn for the rest of the world," he added. Sixth Semiconductor unit The newly approved plant is a joint venture between Indian tech giant HCL and global electronics manufacturer Foxconn. It will be located near Jewar Airport in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region of Uttar Pradesh. Focus on display driver chips The facility will specialise in manufacturing display driver chips, which are essential for devices like mobile phones, laptops, PCs, cars, and other consumer electronics with displays. What will the new semiconductor plant do? The upcoming plant will produce display driver chips — essential components that control how content appears on screens in devices like mobile phones, laptops, PCs, automobiles, and other electronics. It will have the capacity to handle 20,000 wafers per month. The output will be around 3.6 crore (36 million) chips per month. These chips manage the function and format of visuals on digital displays, making them crucial for everyday gadgets. Growing semiconductor ecosystem India now has five semiconductor units already in advanced construction, with this sixth marking another critical milestone. Global players like Applied Materials and Lam Research (equipment), and Merck, Linde, Air Liquide, and Inox (gas and chemical suppliers), have already set up or are expanding operations in India to support this ecosystem. "Applied Materials and Lam Research are two of the largest equipment manufacturers. Both have a presence in India now," the govt said in a press release. R&D and design push Students and entrepreneurs from 270 academic institutions and 70 startups are working on cutting-edge design technologies to develop new products. 20 products created by students have been taped out by SCL Mohali. This initiative is central to India's broader mission of self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat), ensuring the country can meet growing demand for semiconductors driven by expansion in electronics, defence, healthcare, and AI sectors.
