A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, March 28, 2025, with a 6.4-magnitude aftershock occurring just 12 minutes later, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 17.2 km from Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, home to about 1.5 million people.
Videos shared on social media showed buildings collapsing and people fleeing in panic as they sought safety following the tremors.
In the capital, Naypyidaw, a major hospital was turned into a 'mass casualty area,' as reported by Agence France-Presse.
The tremors from the earthquake were felt strongly in neighboring Thailand, particularly in Bangkok, where a 30-story office building under construction collapsed, trapping at least 43 workers.

Five killed, two missing in Vietnam floods
Typhoon winds and rains that lashed central Vietnam killed five people and left two more missing, according to an official toll, with huge tracts of farmland flooded by the deluge. Typhoon Wutip made landfall in southern China on Saturday with winds gusting up to 128 kilometres per hour (80 miles per hour) and was downgraded to a tropical storm after swooping up the Gulf of Tonkin on Vietnam's flank. Vietnam's agriculture ministry said on Saturday evening that three people had been killed in central Quang Tri province, with two more fatalities and two people missing in Quang Binh province. More than 70,000 hectares (172,000 acres) of cropland were flooded, the ministry said. Chinese authorities on the southern island of Hainan evacuated thousands of people, closed schools and halted rail services on Friday ahead of the storm's landfall. However, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecast on Saturday that the storm would "weaken to dissipation" by the end of the weekend. Natural disasters are becoming more severe and more frequent as a result of climate change. They claimed 514 lives in Vietnam last year, three times more than in 2023, according to the agriculture ministry. In September, northern Vietnam was devastated by Typhoon Yagi, which killed 345 people and caused an estimated economic loss of $3.3 billion. Agence France-Presse

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake hit at 1:15 p.m. local time (5:15 p.m. GMT) at a depth of 76 kilometers (47 miles). Its epicenter was located near the coast of the Atacama Desert. No immediate casualties While the quake was felt across several communities in the expansive Atacama Desert region, initial reports confirmed no immediate casualties. Chile's Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service said the earthquake's characteristics did not meet the conditions necessary to generate a tsunami along the South American coast. Miguel Ortiz, deputy director of Chile's national disaster response service, Senapred, said the powerful earthquake caused 'minor' infrastructure damage and power disruptions, leaving nearly 23,000 people without electricity.
