Shocking discovery inside Australia's house of horrors: 'Everything you do online leaves a trace'

A man who paid tens of thousands of dollars to watch children being sexually abused overseas via livestream has been jailed for more than 10 years.
The 67-year-old man from Elizabeth, located in Adelaide 's north, was sentenced after a trial that lasted several months, which concluded in the District Court of South Australia on May 26.
The court heard he had paid around $60,000 to watch the abuse take place live online.
Police became aware of the man after being alerted by AUSTRAC, which had flagged several of his international remittance payments in 2020.
When officers raided his home they sifted through mountains of garbage before finding several hard drives containing child sexual abuse material which were seized.
Once officers inspected the hard drives they the found illegal material which resulted in a total of nine charges being brought against the 67-year-old.
'Further analysis of his laptop identified records of online communications between the man and people in the Philippines discussing the streaming of sexual abuse of children,' the Australian Federal Police said in a statement on May 28.
The man was found guilty on all charges and sentenced to 10 years, one month and 25 days in prison with a non-parole period of five years and nine months.
AFP Sergeant Stephen Hegarty said sexual predators who expect to remain hidden online should not be so confident.
'Everything you do online leaves a trace, and we are working tirelessly to identify it,' he said.
'Our goal is to protect children wherever they live and ensure anyone trying to harm them is brought before the courts.'
Markus Erikson, AUSTRAC National Coordinator Law Enforcement, was one of the investigators who tipped off South Australia's Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team.
He said digital money trails are one of the easiest ways officers track down child predators as they reveal 'not only who they were, but how they operate'.
'Financial transactions are helping us piece together the full picture of offending and connect perpetrators across international borders,' Mr Erikson said.
'We must dismantle this vile trade and ensure that the system enabling profits becomes the tool that catches the offenders.'
The Elizabeth man was initially charged with four counts of accessing and possessing child abuse material in 2021.
After investigators looked closer into the hard drive's contents however, he received another five charges.
These included two counts of encouraging an offence, namely sexual activity with a child outside Australia, and one count of using a carriage service to transmit indecent communication to a person under the age of 16.
He was also charged with one count of using a carriage service to access child abuse material and one count of using a carriage service to access child pornography.
His trial stretched from February to March 2025 and his sentencing was backdated to his initial arrest in September 2021.
He will be eligible for parole in June 2027.

Authorities are searching for a Washington state father of 3 dead girls

A man in central Washington state is wanted for murder after his three young daughters were reported missing and then found dead. Authorities asked the public Tuesday for help finding Travis Decker, 32, who is wanted for three counts of murder and kidnapping, according to police in Wenatchee, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of Seattle. Police said it was unknown whether Decker, a former Army soldier with 'extensive training,' was armed. On Friday the mother of the girls, ages 9, 8 and 5, reported that their father did not return them after a planned visit, police said. Over the weekend authorities looked for the children and for Decker, who was believed to be living out of a white 2017 GMC Sierra pickup with Washington plates. Decker's unoccupied truck was found Monday near a campground, police said, and officers found the girls' bodies during a search. Anyone who may have seen Decker since Friday or knows his current location was asked to call 911. 'Due to safety concerns do not attempt to contact or approach Decker,' police said. The Wenatchee School District said the girls were students of Lincoln Elementary. Counseling services were available, and the district asked people to respect the privacy of students, staff members and families and come to the campus only for regular school business. It was not known how long the girls were with Decker before their mother contacted police, according to Capt. Brian Chance. 'What prompted her to call us was that ... he was late returning the girls and had not communicated to her that he was going to be late, which was his typical fashion and so this was out of the ordinary,' Chance said. Decker and the girls' mother are divorced, Chance said. He did not have details on how the girls were killed or on Decker's employment. In addition to living out of his truck, Decker is known to occasionally stay in motels, Chance said. Chelan County Sheriff's Office, which found the truck, was leading the search in the Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest area while other teams followed up on 'potential credible information and tips' regarding Decker's location, the agency said in a statement.

Brittany Higgins follows her husband and takes on a new role at his workplace - as she reveals the very personal reason she decided it was the right fit

Brittany Higgins has revealed she is returning to the workforce and joining the same company her husband is employed at. Ms Higgins is now the director of public affairs at the independent public relations agency Third Hemisphere, the Australian Financial Review reported. The announcement comes just months after her husband David Sharaz announced in March he had taken on the role of director at the independent PR agency. The pair are working from home full-time as they navigate early parenthood after welcoming their three-month-old son Freddie into the world on March 2. The role is a natural fit for Ms Higgins who worked as the Liberal Party media adviser before she was thrust into the limelight after stressful rape and defamation trials. Following the trials, Ms Higgins became an outspoken advocate for survivors of sexual assault. Ms Higgins explained her decision to join Third Hemisphere was cemented after fostering a connection with the firm's founder and CEO Hannah Moreno. The pair shared a connection as Ms Moreno was also a rape and domestic violence survivor who campaigns for gender equality and fights against sexual harassment. 'There was this general feeling of 'how long do I have to be the story for?' At what point do I get to put it to rest... and have my own identity outside this narrative of Brittany Higgins,' Ms Higgins said. 'I also have a brand reputation and I don't want to align myself in a corporate sense with someone that could be doing something untoward. I had to join a team that I fundamentally believe in and which believes in the same things that I do.' In August 2021, Bruce Lehrmann was identified as the Liberal Party staffer accused of raping Ms Higgins inside Parliament House in 2019. Ms Higgins had shared her alleged sexual assault with Channel 10 journalist Lisa Wilkinson in an interview aired on The Project. Lehrmann has always denied the allegations. Lehrmann faced the ACT Supreme Court in late 2022 but the case was dropped after a juror brought outside research into the deliberation room. A second trial was also aborted, citing concerns for Ms Higgins' mental health. In 2023, Lehrmann launched legal proceedings against Wilkinson and Channel 10, claiming he'd been defamed by The Project episode. The ruling in that lawsuit left Lehrmann in ruin with Justice Michael Lee finding that, on the balance of probabilities, he raped Ms Higgins. He has appealed the ruling with the case to go before the Federal Court of Australia in August.
