Livestream View Of Earth From ISS Reminds You Not To Sweat The Small Stuff
The view of Earth from space is a sight that's historically been reserved for a select few. So far, just a handful of specially trained astronauts and billionaires have been able to watch the Earth from outer space, but now a new camera rig onboard the International Space Station is hoping to change that.
A European company called Sen has sent an ultra high definition camera rig up to the ISS that will let anyone and everyone witness the majesty of our little planet. The camera system, called SpaceTV-1, was sent up to the ISS late last year and is now fully installed and streaming, reports Space.com.
The system was installed on the side of the European Space Agency's Columbus module on the ISS. From there, the rig of 4K cameras is livestreaming the view of Earth for around 20 hours a day, save for a few moments of signal loss and the times when the Earth below is in darkness.
It really is quite the site to behold, as the livestream shows off everything the Earth has to offer. There are long sweeping shots of endless blue oceans, pristine greens of the Caribbean islands and even the clouds above the UK look majestic when seen from above. When the sun sets on the ISS, the stream switches to recorded highlights of the Earth that, while I've been watching, has included some pretty stunning views of desert landscapes.
The stream is a great way to clear your head if you're feeling a little overwhelmed by the day so far, as there are no depressing stories about the lack of support for minorities, the ridiculous number of cars driving in America with safety issues or the endless cuts to emissions rules that could save this very planet. Making overwhelmed millennials less concerned about the state of the world wasn't the only aim for the Sen team, however, and it's actually got much more noble ambitions. The company is all about offering up research data to people who may not normally have access, so it's fleet of satellites and cameras in space beam climate and environment data to researchers around the world.
The new SpaceTV-1 camera setup is about furthering that goal and company founder Charles Black said that the footage collected could 'empower everyone with real-time information' and could even 'inspire people.'
To do this, it uses an array of three 4K cameras pointed down at the Earth. One features a wide angle lens that offers a panoramic view of our planet and its horizon - presumably to put any flat-Earthers off arguing. A second camera is pointed directly at the ground, and each pixel you see on the screen represents an area of about 200 feet. Finally, there's a camera pointed at one of the docking ports on the ISS.

Doctors favor treatment with continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, machines, researchers are slated to report this week at a meeting of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The machines keep airways open using mild air pressure provided through a mask patients wear while sleeping. But patients would rather treat their sleep apnea with tirzepatide (Zepbound), a GLP-1 weight-loss drug, researchers found. "The results highlight a need for real-world comparative effectiveness data of CPAP versus tirzepatide, and a potential mismatch between patient and provider preferences when managing comorbid obesity and obstructive sleep apnea," lead researcher Ahmed Khalaf said in a news release. He's a sleep technician in the pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine division at University of California-San Diego. Nearly 30 million adults in the United States have sleep apnea, a disease in which the upper airway collapses during sleep, causing people to wake repeatedly. CPAP has been considered the gold standard for treating sleep apnea, but some patients find the machines too bulky and noisy. About 50% of people prescribed CPAP either can't use it often enough to matter or find it too bothersome, according to Harvard Medical School. Common problems include mask discomfort, dry mouth, breathing that feels out of sync and noise from the machine. Late last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Zepbound as the first drug to treat people with obesity and sleep apnea. At the time, the sleep medicine society hailed the approval as "a positive development for patients and clinicians, who now have another treatment option for this sleep disorder," according to a statement from the academy. But Zepbound is only for people with obesity and sleep apnea, the society noted. Also, Zepbound can reduce the severity of sleep apnea through weight loss, but might not cure the problem. For the new study, researchers analyzed nationwide online survey data from 365 patients, and also spoke to 17 sleep medicine professionals at UCSD. Doctors favored CPAP over Zepbound 53% to 26%, while patients favored Zepbound over CPAP 48% to 35%. Both doctors and patients supported treatment that combined CPAP and Zepbound, but doctors were more enthusiastic about combination therapy, 88% versus 61%. The patients' preferences are likely driven by their own experiences -- 78% said they were either current or former users of CPAP, results show. By comparison, only 23% of patients said they'd ever used Zepbound or Ozempic (semaglutide), the other prominent GLP-1 drug. Principal investigator Dr. Chris Schmickl, an assistant professor of medicine at University of California-San Diego, expressed surprise at the level of disagreement between patients and providers. "Recognizing differing attitudes toward treatment is crucial for developing a realistic and achievable action plan," he said in a news release. "Additional research to understand the underlying reasons behind these preferences will offer valuable insights for providers to guide treatment decisions." Researchers are scheduled to present these findings Wednesday at the society meeting in Seattle. Air Canada adds new flights to popular European destinations
Air Canada's inaugural flight from Montreal to Porto, Portugal, on June 4 has added to the air carrier's growing list of new and existing European destinations.
