SINGAPORE: The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) is exploring possible opportunities to match retrenched Jetstar Asia employees, including crew and corporate staff, to suitable roles with the Singapore Airlines Group, said labour chief Ng Chee Meng.
Over 500 employees from Jetstar Asia will be retrenched following the closure of the Singapore-based low-cost airline on July 31.
In a Facebook post on June 11, Ng said that the NTUC Aerospace and Aviation Cluster will work with Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and Changi Airport Group to identify opportunities for the affected employees as well.
He said: 'The news of Jetstar Asia's closure is a hit for the many employees of the airline. They have contributed much to the airline over the years.'
He added that the NTUC and Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) were informed of the retrenchments in advance, and SMMWU has been working closely with Jetstar Asia to support the workers.
The retrenchment benefits provided are in line with the Tripartite Advisory on Managing Excess Manpower and Responsible Retrenchment, but support goes beyond just financial compensation, Ng added.
Starting next week, NTUC and NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute will be on-site at Changi Airport Terminal 1 to provide direct support, including career coaching, skills upgrading, and employability assistance, he said.
In a statement on Wednesday (June 11), Jetstar Asia said it will support workers with retrenchment packages, employment support, or provide them with other opportunities within the Qantas group or with other airlines and aviation companies in Singapore.
The airline's closure is part of a 'strategic restructure' by its parent company, Australian flag carrier Qantas.
Retrenched employees will receive a redundancy payment of four weeks per year of service, a bonus for this financial year, a special 'thank you' payment as well as other benefits.
In a separate statement, the Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) said it has worked closely with management and negotiated with the company to ensure that affected members and workers receive fair compensation.
SMMWU is affiliated with the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). Jetstar Asia has been unionised since 2009.
An inter-agency task force on retrenchment said in a separate statement that it is working closely with Jetstar and the SMMWU to support the affected workers.
Called the Taskforce for Responsible Retrenchment and Employment Facilitation, it comprises the Ministry of Manpower, Workforce Singapore, the NTUC and the NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute.
'Our priority is to help the affected employees with employment facilitation," said the taskforce in a statement. - The Straits Times/ANN

Rising costs top concern of Malaysian businesses: HSBC survey

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian businesses are grappling with rising costs and persistent supply chain disruptions, prompting them to reconsider their strategies and investment plans. According to HSBC's 2025 Global Trade Pulse Survey, the ongoing changes in tariffs and evolving trade policies continue to exert pressure on local companies, reshaping the landscape for growth and operations. Insights from the survey capture the perspectives and intentions of more than 5,700 international firms across 13 markets, including Malaysia, on the challenges and outlook related to tariffs and global trade. The survey found that, currently, the biggest concern for more than half of Malaysian businesses (55%) is rising costs due to tariffs and other trade-related factors. In response to this, 42% of Malaysian businesses have shifted their focus to domestic markets, prioritising local customers and reducing international exposure while 40% of businesses plan to do the same. In addition, the survey showed 37% of Malaysian businesses have increased their inventory levels to manage supply disruptions, with 49% planning to do so as well. Despite global uncertainties, 250 Malaysia-based companies surveyed are optimistic about their international growth but need external strategic advice on the matter, the findings showed. Furthermore, 91% of companies are confident that they can grow international trade, surpassing the 89% global average. More encouragingly, 73% believe that trade uncertainty has prompted their business to evolve and explore new opportunities, while 55% are seeking strategic advice on international expansion, restructuring or supply chain realignment. Considering current trade dynamics, Malaysia-based businesses are adapting their trade strategy to significantly increase connections with China (61%), South Asia (55%) and North Asia (44%). Beyond Asia, Malaysian businesses also plan to trade more with Europe and the United States (both 32%). HSBC Malaysia CEO and head of banking Datuk Omar Siddiq said despite the challenges posed by the uncertain tariff and trade landscape, businesses in Malaysia are demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the way they operate. 'While supply chains may be further reconfigured, there continues to be strong potential for local companies to leverage on Malaysia's strong trade ties, particularly in Asia. Having said that, it is key to note that markets like the US remain key trade destinations for Malaysia for high-value sectors such as electronics and semiconductors,' he said in a statement. While managing costs is top of mind for Malaysian businesses during this period of global uncertainty, the HSBC survey noted that companies are using the opportunity to innovate and adopt new technologies to boost operational efficiencies. It showed that 64% of Malaysian businesses have adopted new technology or digital platforms, while 48% have developed new products and services. Other growth opportunities that Malaysian businesses are considering include shifting their focus to domestic or regional growth (57%) and improving their internal efficiencies or changing their cost structures (54%). During the current period of trade disruption, Malaysian businesses find cash and liquidity management as the most helpful form of support in managing working capital (64%), followed by improved payment terms with buyers and suppliers (56%) and supply chain finance (55%). 'With over 70% of Malaysian businesses anticipating sustained cost increases from the impact of tariffs and trade uncertainty on the cost of doing business, and businesses facing an average 18% drop in revenue, the imperative for strategic adaptation is clear. 'Despite uncertainties, the world is also full of opportunities. Navigating this climate requires not only agility, but strong partnerships to ensure sustained growth in a shifting global economy,' Omar said.

KUCHING (June 12): A total of 119 Sarawakian entrepreneurs under the Insken Bumiputera Business Coaching (IBBC) programme recorded a sales increase of RM1.9 million in 2024, according to National Institute of Entrepreneurship (Insken) chairman Mustaffa Kamil Ayub. Speaking at the Program Seminar Usahawan Madani Asas Pembangunan Produk dan Servis (SAPPS) at Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Auditorium here today, he highlighted the tangible outcomes of the IBBC programme. 'In 2024, a total of 1,046 Sarawak entrepreneurs participated in Insken programmes. Mustaffa emphasised that continuous learning and entrepreneurial knowledge play a major role in success. 'The knowledge shared is not just theoretical – it produces real impact and tangible results,' he added. He said Insken programmes, including the SAPPS, offer training, seminars, and coaching focused on boosting sales and creating job opportunities. 'SAPPS is not just an ordinary seminar. Today, 30 selected entrepreneurs are undergoing product and service assessments with coaches and industry players to receive direct feedback aimed at strengthening their products for the market.' The seminar, now in its second edition in Sarawak, is a collaboration between Insken, Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), the State Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (Mintred), as well as local agencies and entrepreneurial non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Mustaffa expressed appreciation to all parties involved, as well as to State Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat, who officiated the event. He noted that Insken has a branch in Kuching as part of its long-term commitment to supporting entrepreneurs across Sarawak. 'Our presence here is not symbolic. It is a concrete effort to expand access to quality entrepreneurial programmes,' he said. In conjunction with the seminar, Insken is also hosting an e-BizClinic, offering free consultations by Insken's BisKaunselor, alongside information booths on training and guidance available beyond the seminar. In this regard, Mustaffa urged participants to take full advantage of the opportunities available. 'Let the knowledge gained here not just be stored, but implemented as a strategy to elevate your business to greater heights.' Also present were Insken director of Training Ts Dr Izham Naquiddin Shah Arif Shah and HRD Corp head of regional operations division Muhamad Hafez Kamaruddin. entrepreneurs IBBC Insken Bumiputera Business Coaching Kuching
