Skeletal remains found from Lohit riverbank suspected to be of Assam dentist
Itanagar: The skeletal remains discovered along the Lohit riverbank in Arunachal Pradesh's Lohit district is suspected to be of Guwahati-based dentist Dr. Debanjib Kumar Sharma, who had gone missing from a riverside resort nearly a month ago. Dr. Debanjib Kumar Sharma.
Police said they have collected DNA samples from Dr Sharma's mother and daughter and it will be sent to laboratories in either Guwahati or Kolkata for forensic analysis, sparking hopes of closure for the family.
The remains were found on June 23 by local fishermen near Panbari, about 15-20 km from Parshuram Kund. Kumar had disappeared under mysterious circumstances on May 31 after checking into Tulow Resort, situated near the river.
'We've collected DNA samples from Dr Sharma's mother and daughter. They will be sent to laboratories in either Guwahati or Kolkata for forensic analysis,' said Lohit superintendent of police (SP) Thutan Jamba. 'It may take two to three months, but we are pushing for quicker results.'
According to police, Sharma was last seen by resort staff around 8 am on the day of his disappearance, reportedly shifting rooms due to landslides and flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall. His belongings, including his motorcycle, were found intact—fueling confusion over his sudden disappearance.
Rescue teams comprising police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were immediately pressed into service, but no trace was found until last week's grim discovery.
Medical experts believe the skeletal remains could be about a month old, which matches the timeline of Sharma's disappearance. Yet, police are keeping all possibilities open.
'Preliminary inputs suggest accidental drowning due to high river levels,' Jamba said. 'However, we are not ruling out foul play.'
'We will continue the investigation based on forensic findings,' the SP added.

He added Saraya Industries was a private limited company deemed to be a public limited company and was a different entity from Majithia, and could not be solely associated with the latter. "Majithia has no control over the company's day-to-day functioning," Sukhbir said. Showroom owners duped of Rs48L in bid to by scrap copper
Pune: An automobile showroom owner (30) from Satara Road filed a complaint with the Parvati police, stating that online fraudsters duped him of Rs 47.72 lakh between April and May by promising to sell him scrap copper. The victim is a resident of Satara Road. He stated that his partner wanted to buy large quantities of scrap copper. He conducted an online search for companies selling scrapped copper. An officer of the Parvati police said, "The complainant and his partner stumbled upon a link to a South Africa-based company. They contacted the company via email and put forth their requirement for the scrapped copper." "The victims took the banking details of the company and transferred 30% amount—Rs 47.72 lakh—as an advance payment," police said. "After the payment, the material did not reach Pune or Mumbai. The suspects kept promising the delivery. The complainant and his partner then decided to investigate the company's background. They visited several business sites in South Africa and realised that no such company existed. They realised it was a fake company," police said.

Punjab suspends 26 jail officers, staffers for dereliction of duty
Chandigarh: The Punjab govt suspended 26 officers and employees of the jails department for dereliction of duty. Punjab jails minister Laljit Singh Bhullar informed that the action had been taken under Punjab Civil Services (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1970. The minister said illegal activities, misbehaviour, indiscipline, absence from duty, and activities like involvement with prisoners would not be tolerated at all.
