Why a verdant Goa village is resisting Russian signages

India Today14-05-2025

It is often referred to as Goa's 'Mini-Russia'. Nevertheless, the boom of Russian tourists in Morjim village, in the state's north, has had a flipside. In a recent gram sabha meeting, dismayed villagers objected to the proliferation of signboards in Russian language, prompting the local panchayat to promise these will be taken down.Russians top the charts among international tourists to Goa. Located on the banks of the Chapora river estuary in Pernem taluka, Morjim is known for its verdant beach. The high footfall of Russian tourists and immigrants has given the village the monikers of 'Little Russia' and 'Mini-Russia'. Some villagers have even picked up the Russian language.advertisementThe brush with Russians, though, has been anything but smooth, with local politicians in the past accusing them of criminal backgrounds and illegal activities.Pavan Morje, the sarpanch of Morjim village, said many restaurants had put up boards in Russian for the convenience of tourists. 'These boards have signs in English and Russian. We will now ask them to use English, Marathi and Hindi. No signages in Russian can be put up on the main roads, but it's okay to have Russian language boards inside the restaurants,' he said.
Morjim has some 200 small and large restaurants and 11 tourism shacks. Over 400,000 tourists visit the village during season, and some even come over during monsoons—an otherwise leaner period for Goa's tourism industry. In 2023, Goa was visited by 8.1 million domestic and 453,000 international tourists. Last year, the state welcomed 9.94 million domestic tourists and 468,000 international tourists. 'Goa has notched a notable 21 per cent growth in tourism, which is a very positive trend. While domestic tourist footfall increased by 22 per cent, foreign tourist arrivals climbed by 3 per cent. These statistics unmistakably indicate a robust growth, reaffirming the state's position as a most-preferred tourist destination,' stated the Economic Survey of Goa for 2024-25.advertisementGoa's tourism department has said tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2025 grew by 10.5 per cent year on year from the corresponding period in 2024. January to March 2025 saw over 2.8 million visitors as against over 2.5 million in the first quarter of 2024.Subscribe to India Today Magazine

Sonali Bendre recalls visiting Babulnath Temple and Siddhivinayak Temple with Coldplay's Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson: ‘She's such a lovely person'

When British singer Chris Martin of Coldplay visited India earlier this year, it wasn't just his music that stole hearts. Alongside Hollywood actress Dakota Johnson , the duo surprised fans by exploring the spiritual side of Mumbai. They were joined by Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre and 'Swades' star Gayatri Oberoi during their quiet yet meaningful visit to some of the city's most iconic temples. Before Coldplay's big concerts at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on January 18 and 19, Chris and Dakota paid a special visit to the Babulnath Temple. Photos and videos of the couple offering prayers along with Sonali and Gayatri quickly went viral, showing them soaking in the spiritual vibe. Sonali recalls taking Dakota and Chris to Mumbai's famous temples In her interview with ANI, Sonali Bendre fondly remembered the moment she was asked to join the group on their spiritual journey. She said, "She's (Dakota) such a lovely person. It was my yoga teacher who told me that, you know what, somebody is coming in and they want to be taken to a few temples. Will you do this? I'm like, okay, who is it? And that's how I get to know. So I think Chris and her (Dakota) wanted to have a temple experience. And I think that's an experience everybody should have at some point. It was lovely. With her (and Chris), we had visited Babulnath Temple. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NYC Hotel Smartphone Booking | Bookmark Now! | New York City Hotel Booking | Mill Canyon Road Click Here Undo And then the next day, we visited Siddhivinayak Temple." From their dress to their demeanour, Chris and Dakota were seen fully embracing Indian customs. At the Babulnath Temple, they offered prayers, and the next day, the group went to Siddhivinayak Temple, one of Mumbai's most famous religious spots. Dakota wore traditional attire and was seen chatting happily with Sonali and Gayatri as they walked through the temple grounds. Break-up rumours surround Chris and Dakota While their temple visits showed a peaceful side, Chris and Dakota's relationship has been in the news for other reasons. Reports say they have split. A source told PEOPLE magazine, 'It feels final this time.' Neither Chris nor Dakota's teams have commented on this. Earlier in 2024, it was said that the couple had been engaged for years but were not rushing to marry. When rumours of a breakup started in August 2024, Dakota's representative said they were 'happily together.' A source added, 'Sure, they've had issues and taken breaks in the past, but things are great now. They both love their careers. They are balancing things the best they can.' In June 2024, it was reported they had 'ups and downs, but now they're definitely back on.' So far, Chris and Dakota have not spoken about the recent split rumours. Meghalaya Tourist Guide Claims Indore Couple Was With 3 Men On Day They Went Missing

Last Updated: Albert Pde, a local guide at Mawlakhiat village, said that he saw the couple with three male tourists on the day of their disappearance. A tourist guide in Meghalaya told police that the honeymooning couple from Indore who went missing on May 23 were last seen accompanied by three unidentified men, according to a PTI report. The couple- Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam- had been vacationing in the East Khasi Hills district when they vanished from the Sohra (Cherrapunji) area. Raja Raghuvanshi 's body was recovered earlier this week, but Sonam remains missing. A multi-agency search operation is underway to trace her. Albert Pde, a local guide at Mawlakhiat village, told PTI that he saw the couple with three male tourists while they were climbing the 3,000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat around 10 am on May 23. Albert Pde recalled offering to guide the couple a day earlier, but they had declined and hired someone else. 'I recognised them when I saw them again. The four men were ahead, and the woman was walking behind. They were speaking in Hindi, which I couldn't fully follow," Albert Pde said. He added that when he reached Mawlakhiat, the couple's scooter was no longer there. An official confirmed to PTI that this information had been shared with local police. What Sonam's Family Has Said Sonam's brother, Govind, criticised the pace and direction of the investigation, accusing the Meghalaya government of treating the case as if she were already dead. 'We believe Sonam is alive. The government needs to search for her like she's alive. Bring in the CBI or any other agency," he told PTI. Responding to the criticism, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the government was making every effort to locate the missing woman. The ongoing operation, however, has been hampered by challenging terrain, incessant rain and poor visibility. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said, 'We are doing everything we can. Our teams are working tirelessly with trained dogs and special equipment. The search will continue."
