The University of Mumbai has commenced the pre-registration process for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) admissions for the 2025-26 academic year. Aspirants seeking admission to arts, commerce, science, engineering, and management courses in colleges affiliated with Mumbai University can now begin the application process.
As per the latest guidelines, it is now mandatory for all applicants to generate an Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) ID to complete the pre-registration process. The directive follows the University Grants Commission (UGC) rule implemented in 2023, which requires ABC ID for all college admissions.

Mumbai University UG, PG admissions 2025: How to apply
Students applying for admissions can follow these steps for successful pre-registration:
Step 1. Generate ABC ID at abc.gov.in before beginning the pre-registration process.
Step 2. Visit the MU admission portal at mu.ac.in/admission and complete the registration using a valid email ID and mobile number.
Step 3. Provide accurate personal information, including name, permanent address, educational qualification, caste, and category details, matching those on the Aadhaar card.
Step 4. Upload necessary documents, including a photograph and a signature, as per the instructions on the portal, and submit the application.

No new tariffs after Bilateral Trade Agreement: India wants US assurance
India wants an assurance from the US that no additional tariffs will be imposed by the Donald Trump administration once the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) is finalised, said people familiar with the matter. The deal is in the final stages of negotiation and both sides are hopeful of reaching accord quickly. India has sought concessions for labour-intensive sectors such as leather and textiles. 'We have put everything on the table,' said one of the persons, adding that India wants stability in tariffs once a deal is rolled out. Trade agreements typically include renegotiation clauses, or compensation from the partner effecting a tariff increase. India would like the pact to provide for such a mechanism. 'This would ensure the agreement is ring-fenced from prospective changes,' said another person. The US President on April 2 announced a reciprocal tariff of 26% on goods imports from India as part of its trade levies all over the world. These tariffs were paused for 90 days until July 9. However, the baseline tariff of 10% remains in force. There is also Trump's mercurial nature. Live Events Independent experts are agreed on the need for such a clause. 'The BTA should be timebound and not in perpetuity,' said an expert on trade issues. 'India must insist on a clawback provision — that it will withdraw benefits if the US raises tariffs or goes back on any of its commitments.' Negotiations Officials said Washington has to find a way to reduce tariffs as New Delhi has sought concessions for sectors such as textiles and leather, as mentioned above. The Trump administration currently requires approval from the US Congress to lower levy below most favoured nation (MFN) rates, but it does have the authority to scrap reciprocal tariffs. 'We want preferential and sustained trade advantages and have left it to the US to decide the route it takes to reduce its tariff barriers—whether through the Trade Promotion Authority or by seeking Congressional approval,' said one of the officials cited earlier. The government is also monitoring the impact of the 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium and the 25% tariffs on auto. While the auto components sector doesn't expect a big dent for now, there may be an impact if the tariffs persist. According to the official quoted, India will pursue a concession, if others get one. Early Harvest Both sides have had several rounds of discussions on the proposed trade deal and are hopeful of concluding at least an early harvest deal. 'We are working on the early tranche, and there is a date (July 9), before which we would like to conclude this. The progress is good,' commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal said on Monday. A US trade team is in India last week to firm up the contours. India has made it clear that any meaningful expansion in bilateral trade will require a significant reduction in US tariffs. Both sides aim to more than double such trade to $500 billion by 2030. However, a Delhi-based trade expert cautioned, 'India should rethink its proposed BTA with the US. The US has a history of incomplete trade deals, such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. It has retracted its WTO commitments also. Moreover, the future of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity hangs in the balance with the US-China trade deal.'

ETtech Explainer: Behind crackdown on unauthorised use of govt databases for user onboarding
The Union government is restricting private firms from using official databases like Aadhaar to offer identity verification services to their clients as part of a crackdown on unauthorised access to sensitive databases. According to two people in the know, officials of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology ( MeitY ) have conveyed to the executives of multiple technology-led startups to abstain from offering offline Aadhaar-based KYC services because they have been doing it through unauthorised channels. ET had reported on June 9 that startups like Zoop, Surepass, Digitap and Signzy were impacted by a government order restricting access to their websites through telecom networks. While the government is tightening scrutiny of data platforms, industry insiders are trying to find regulated channels through which Aadhaar verification can be done. ET explains identity verification services provided by these startups and the issues around them. What are the core services being provided? That is where ID verification startups come in, offering verification of documents submitted by consumers. They also help authenticate customers' identity numbers by cross-checking with government databases. Players like IDfy, Signzy, DigiO and others offer services like video KYC, Aadhaar e-Sign and others. What is the problem here? The Centre is trying to find out whether these services are being provided through legal channels and lawful means. Industry sources told ET that while large venture-funded startups stick to the rules and are also regulated in most of the cases, many smaller players in the ecosystem gain unauthorised access to some of the government databases. 'Some of the platforms are also involved in scraping from government websites, getting consumer data through unregulated means,' chief executive at an ID verification startup said on condition of anonymity. Some of the data contained in Aadhaar are personally identifiable information (PII), while some of the GST data might not be classified as PII. Who is looking into the issue? MeitY, which is in charge of all the digital properties of the government, restricted access to some of these websites through certain telecom networks. Once executives of these firms met officials, they were told to follow designated channels for access to the Aadhaar database, so that consumers can be verified by only regulated platforms through their Aadhaar numbers. Similar services are also provided by the GST (goods and services tax) database and through the income tax database. Why do startups need these platforms? Fraud prevention is one of the key areas for which startups are dependent on these platforms. Mostly for fintech services like digital lending, insurance, payments and merchant KYC, backend customer verification is extremely useful. They integrate with these service providers to offer verification on the go. 'If there are too many hops, then the customer might drop off. Once these verifications happen via API integrations, the customer experience gets smoother,' founder of a fintech startup said. Other issues As the online verification sector has grown, startups have also been scouting for as many alternate data points as possible for these enrichment services. Going beyond the GST database or PAN database, platforms have been offering enrichment services on top of customers' UPI IDs. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) cracked down on such unauthorised use of the UPI IDs in October last year. Now, the government is also trying to crack down on the use of Aadhaar through unauthorised means.
