Why Ace Bailey going to the Jazz is actually the best thing for him
Jonathan Givony: "[Utah] was not one of his preferred destinations... was hoping to get to either Washington, New Orleans, or Brooklyn... a stunner, but if you think about it, this is an outstanding place for Ace Bailey."Bobby Marks: "I give Utah a lot of credit here..." #NBA pic.twitter.com/IQJoNzgwlm
The biggest question mark of the first round of the NBA Draft was no doubt Ace Bailey and where the talented Rutgers forward would land. Once touted as the third-best prospect in the draft, Bailey's stock tumbled as he seemed to shun the pre-draft process, becoming the only U.S.-based prospect not to visit any teams.
In the end, though, his slide didn't last too long, as the Utah Jazz scooped him up at No. 5, taking a chance on the best player on the board despite Bailey clearly having a different destination in mind. And it might be the best thing to happen to him.
FLICK FLICK: NBA Draft red carpet photos
The way Bailey declined to visit with teams and reportedly nixed the one he had scheduled with the Philadelphia 76ers gave off a real sense of entitlement. He wasn't even the top player in the draft, yet the 18-year-old seemed to be trying to dictate where he would go. ESPN's Jonathan Givony reported that Bailey's camp informed interested teams that he viewed himself as a top-three player and wanted a situation where there was a clear path to stardom. It was one of the oddest pre-draft strategies I can remember, and it did cost him.
If there was any chance the Sixers were going to take Bailey with the No. 3 pick, his fall to No. 5 will potentially cost him over $9 million on the NBA rookie scale, according to Spotrac. The Jazz taking him where they did prevented that from being a bigger pay cut. But while that seemed to be a sacrifice Bailey seemed willing to make to get what he wanted, he may find Utah can provide the same things.
SECOND ROUND: The best available players on Day 2
The Jazz are a young, re-building team in need of a star to be their new face. Additionally, they may not be very far from winning, with recent draft picks in place to start turning things around, including lottery picks Cody Williams and Taylor Hendricks. If you ignore, the whole "Utah" part of it, everything Bailey could want is right there. But where Utah did Bailey the biggest favor is by not giving him what he wanted.
Can you just imagine if Bailey actually landed in one of his preferred destinations after the way he went about this process? His entitlement would have been validated. I doubt anyone in Washington or New Orleans or Brooklyn would have been able to tell him anything. He'd be bigger than the team at that point. In Utah, that's not the case. Just by taking him, the Jazz let him know up front his wants take a backseat to the team. It could completely backfire on them, but if he works hard and turns into the player he thinks he is, everyone should end up happy.
The Utah Mammoth also made a move
The Jazz weren't the only Utah team getting active on Wednesday night. The Mammoth also made a move, landing forward JJ Peterka in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres for Micheal Kesselring and Josh Doan.

NHL DRAFT: Ranking the top-32 hockey prospects
FTW's Charles Curtis graded the trade favorably for the Mammoth, who are heading in the right direction as they enter their second year: "The Mammoth are building something really good here. They've got a great core with names like Logan Cooley, Clayton Keller, Dylan Guenther and Mikhail Sergachev. Now? They added some firepower at the wing with Peterka without giving up a ton."
White Sox stand with Ketel Marte
Every team wants a passionate fanbase, but there's a line where that passion can go too far, which is what happened with one Chicago White Sox fan whose words about Ketel Marte's late mother left the Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman in tears during Tuesday's game.
Thankfully, the White Sox and MLB took swift action. The fan, who was removed immediately after, has now been banned indefinitely from all MLB ballparks, ESPN's Jesse Rogers reported Wednesday. The Sox further distanced themselves from the fan by posting a message on their scoreboard during Wednesday's game that said "the White Sox community supports Ketel Marte."

Good for them.
DeWanna Bonner has something to say
The Indiana Fever and forward DeWanna Bonner completed their ugly split Wednesday, with the team waiving the forward after just nine games into what turned out to be a bad fit. Though it was certainly a tough lesson for the Fever, who went all-in to build a championship contender this offseason, Bonner didn't come out of this messy situation looking the most pristine either. That's likely why the 37-year-old went out of her way Thursday morning to let people to know she isn't a quitter.
In an Instagram post, Bonner said "A QUITTER!! Nah never been that!!" She added, "Let's just make sure the apologies, are just as loud as the disrespect!!"
A post shared by DeWanna Bonner (@dewannabonner)
Whatever went on behind the scenes, it seems it was best for both parties to go their separate ways. Unfortunately, the Fever now have a new Caitlin Clark injury to manage. Yikes.

Ace Baily's representiatives reportedly told team with top five pick he would not report if drafted
Ace Bailey's representative reportedly told one team with a top-five pick in the 2025 NBA Draft that if it selected Bailey, he would not report to them, according to a new story from Jonathan Givony and Tim Bontemps of ESPN. Whether or not they were told that — and despite not working him out — the Utah Jazz selected Ace Bailey with the No. 5 pick Wednesday night. It was not a reach by the Jazz — Bailey has arguably the second highest ceiling of any player in this year's draft and Utah needs high-level talent — but the sense in league circles heading into the draft was that Bailey and his representative, Omar Cooper, had a promise and/or were trying to steer the Rutgers star to Washington or Brooklyn. Cooper denied that in the same ESPN report. 'Every NBA team watched him work out in Chicago,' Cooper told ESPN. 'He did 18 interviews. Everyone got his medical. They watched him run and jump. They got his measurements... There is nothing uncommon about how Ace Bailey's pre-draft process was handled.' Bailey, for his part, echoed the same idea at the draft, stating that he was not worried about where he was selected or what people thought about his unusual pre-draft strategy of avoiding workouts. 'They feel how they feel,' Bailey said. 'But my team and me, are focusing on basketball and them doing what they're doing, so it happens.' If the report is true, Bailey's options were always limited if a team called his bluff. He can choose not to report to the Jazz (or whoever drafted him), but he cannot return to college after staying in the draft. Additionally, if he plays professionally overseas next season, the Jazz retain his draft rights. The only way to end up with another team is to sit out an entire year, not playing professionally anywhere, then re-enter the draft. However, that is a crap shoot because who knows what the draft order will be a year from now and what team's priorities will be. Bailey, a 6'8" wing, was projected as a top-three pick for much of the year. Bailey looks like a prototypical NBA wing on paper: Great positional size, a high-level athlete, high motor, shot 36.7% from 3 in college, can create his own shot, and is a tough shot maker who averaged 18.4 points and 7.2 rebounds a game. However, not all scouts were convinced he would come close to reaching that potential in the NBA. Those concerns, plus his pre-draft strategy of no workouts and some interviews that left teams confused, saw him slide a couple of spots to No. 5, where the Jazz snapped him up before Washington or Brooklyn had the chance. Bailey is likely to make his Jazz debut at the Utah Summer League, which starts on July 5 in Salt Lake City.

OKC Thunder 2025 NBA Draft live updates: Pick results, trade rumors for Round 2
The 2025 NBA draft is here. The two-day event moves onto Thursday, June 26. Fresh off an NBA championship, the Oklahoma City Thunder enter this year's class with three draft picks. The Thunder had a quiet first round. They selected Georgetown's Thomas Sorber with the No. 15 pick. They then traded away the No. 24 pick to the Sacramento Kings for a 2027 first-round pick (via Spurs). The protections were not released, but it's reportedly a top-16 protected pick. The Thunder enter the second round with the No. 44 pick (via Hawks). Of course, they could easily move up and down throughout Day 2 if needed. It's one of the busiest days in the league. Plenty of transactions have already happened and will continue to do so. Rebuild teams will hope to add young talent while contenders will sell off their draft capital for win-now moves. The Thunder are in a rare sweet spot where they can do both. Thunder Wire will conduct live updates of the 2025 NBA draft Round 1. Please regularly check back to this post for instant reactions to what the Thunder do a day after they celebrated their championship with a parade: Full details on Thunder-Kings trade The Thunder kicked the can down the road with their late first-round pick from the Clippers. Not a ton of upside from what they received from the Kings, but the champion roster has too many players under contract already to take on a loaded draft class. Thoughts on Thomas Sorber While the Thunder were busy chasing a championship, they kept their draft board up to date. Sorber was their sole first-round pick. He was a one-and-done prospect from Georgetown. The 19-year-old has been out since February with foot surgery.
