Rs 5 lakh Aid Announced For Families Of Those Killed In Pune Bridge Collapse

Following the collapse of a bridge over the Indrayani River in Maharashtra's Pune district on Sunday afternoon, the district administration on Monday announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the four individuals who lost their lives in the tragedy.
According to Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi, the announcement is part of a broader response to the incident, which saw 55 people fall into the river. Of these, 51 were successfully rescued, and 38 are currently receiving treatment.
Speaking to ANI, Mr Dudi provided an update on the situation, noting that an aerial survey was conducted today to finalize the search operation, ensuring no one remains unaccounted for.
"A total of 55 people fell due to the bridge collapse. Out of 55, 51 people were successfully rescued. Treatment for 38 people is still going on in the hospital. The condition of all the persons is stable. Unfortunately, four people died, and their bodies have been identified. There is no report of a missing person now. This afternoon, we conducted an aerial survey at the spot to finalise the search operation," Mr Dudi stated.
Mr Dudi also outlined the formation of a probe team to investigate the collapse, comprising officers from the Irrigation Department, Public Works Department (PWD), Forest Department, and Police. "We have formed a team under the District Collector with officers from the Irrigation Department, PWD, Forest dept, and Police - to probe the incident, bring out the shortcomings, and review the existing SOPs," he said, emphasising the need to identify lapses and strengthen safety protocols.
Additionally, he has requested a structural report on all old bridges in the region to assess their condition and prevent future tragedies.
The District Collector reiterated a public appeal to avoid visiting such locations during the monsoon season, given the heightened risks.
"Again, I appeal to the public to avoid visiting such places during the monsoon season. I have asked for a structural report on all old bridges... Financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each will be given to the families of each deceased," he added.
Earlier today, a high-level meeting of top administrators of the state was convened, chaired by the State Chief Secretary, Sujata Saunik, at her office, with the Additional Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, Rural Development Department Secretary (Roads), Divisional Commissioner of Pune, Pune District Collector, Pune Chief Executive Officer, officials from the Public Works Department, and Pune Superintendent of Police joining virtually.

"At some of the notified places, the administration deploys a police force and in some locations it takes help from local villagers. As the chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Dudi constituted an official inquiry committee to investigate the bridge collapse in detail. The panel comprises additional collector, forest officer, deputy commissioner of police (crime branch), superintendent engineers of the public works department (PWD) and the irrigation department, and the resident deputy collector. Chief secretary Sujata Saunik chaired a high-level meeting on Monday to review the situation. Senior officials, including additional chief secretary, principal secretary, rural development (roads) secretary, divisional commissioner of Pune, Pune district collector, CEO of Zilla Parishad, PWD officials and Pune superintendent of police attended it. Offshore breakwater project remains stalled
T 'puram: Even as the city's coastline saw significant damage in the previous monsoon seasons, state govt's proposed offshore breakwater project at Shanghumugham was dropped. The project, once seen as a crucial step to protect the fragile beach from further erosion, remains stalled, with no permanent or scientific solution in sight. Sources close to the irrigation department said the offshore breakwater plan was dropped and a revised approach is now being developed to implement shore-based protection methods instead. The Asian Development Bank (ADB), which agreed to fund the project, reportedly requested design modifications before releasing the funds. Discussions are currently ongoing with the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) in Chennai, which has been tasked with redesigning the proposal. The initial detailed project report (DPR) and cost estimates for the offshore structure were submitted to ADB in June 2024, but the plan failed to move forward. However, the work has been stalled since then, the official said. According to Antony Raju, MLA, the govt is now considering the installation of geotubes, small geotube structures similar to those being tested at Poonthura Beach. These structures are believed to provide protection without compromising the natural aesthetics of the beach. "We are evaluating whether the geotubes at Poonthura are effective during the monsoon. If they are, we will replicate the method at Shanghumugham. If we use boulders and stones, the beauty of the beach will be lost and it will no longer be attractive for tourists. Besides, the fishermen are also against the offshore breakwater as it could affect fishing," Raju said. He also revealed that KIIFB has sanctioned Rs 190 crore for coastal protection work from Poonthura to Kochuthoppe near Shanghumugham, with Rs 19 crore specifically allocated for the Poonthura stretch. According to Raju, if state govt gives a green signal, work at Shanghumugham can begin at the earliest. The urgency of action has been highlighted by the recent destruction caused by rough seas and heavy rain in the region. In the past two days, several houses near Shanghumugham, Veli and Vettucaud were damaged due to coastal erosion. The district administration has ordered affected families to shift to relief camps as a precautionary measure.

Rs 1,000 FD for enrolment: Headmaster's push to save govt school
Koppal: When govt schools are facing a scarcity of students, a govt lower primary school in Hire Sindogi village in Koppal district maintained the same strength due to the headmaster's offer of providing a fixed deposit of Rs 1,000 for students getting admission to Class 1. He is also offering notebooks, school bags, belts, ties, t-shirt uniforms, and belts for about 30 students from classes 1 to 5. Guruswamy R, headmaster, told TOI that it's his small service to poor children, and an effort to save govt schools. "I have been serving here for 10 years and I started offering FD and learning material from 2020," he added. He further said, "The intake of 6-7 students continued for the past five years, though there is an English medium school in the village. We kept FD for a total of 23 students. As some parents preferred the Sukanya Samruddhi scheme of the post office, we paid Rs 1,000 as the initial amount and parents themselves are paying the later instalments. With the amount, parents opened savings bank accounts in either the post office or a nationalised bank to maintain the FD of their wards.
