Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said: "Over the past few hours, the activity flagged in the previous statement issued at 4.14am (3.14am BST) has carried on with strombolian explosions of growing intensity that, at the moment, are of strong intensity and nearly continuous."
In the past, Etna's eruptions have caused nearby towns to be covered in black volcanic ash.

Police said the 38-year-old's disappearance was reported to the Guarda Nacional Republicana on May 28 at around 8pm by a man who was on holiday with him. A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British man reported missing in Portugal and are in contact with the local authorities."

A body has been found in the search for a Scottish man who disappeared on a stag do in Portugal. Greg Monks was last seen leaving the main strip in the resort town of Albufeira in the early hours of Wednesday, May 28. The 38-year-old from Cambuslang had arrived on the evening of May 27 as part of a stag do and was on a night out with friends. The groomsman told the group he was leaving around 2am to return to his accommodation. A statement by Portuguese police said: 'After several diligences and the presumed route taken in the early hours of that day, since the last sighting, the body was located in a vacant and very rugged lot.' The force said an autopsy would be carried out once the body is removed. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has been contacted for comment.
