The excitement around Kwena Maphaka is comprehensible.
He sends down left-arm down thunderbolts that have touched the 150km/h mark. He is strong, mature, smart and ambitious, and hails from the same St Stithians stock as Kagiso Rabada.
The fact that he's only 19-year-old ensures he appeals to an entire generation unburdened by the country's fractious past.
In essence, Maphaka is the future of the Proteas cricket team on the field, and with a home World Cup on the horizon in two years' time, the picture-perfect image Cricket SA are trying to promote off it.
This is an almighty load to bear for anyone - let alone someone only recently eligible to obtain a drivers licence - with even the great Rabada admitting to having suffered from bouts of anxiety during the early years of his international career.
It is for this reason that Maphaka can only be grateful that he has Shukri Conrad steering his Proteas' future.
Conrad intentionally left the teenager out of his World Test Championship Final squad. For all Maphaka's promise, Lord's was no children's playground with the grizzled Australians, the opposition, and the cameras of the world highlighting every play.
Instead, Conrad will unleash Maphaka - and as he rightfully says 'with all due respect to Zimbabwe' - at the Queens Sports Ground in Bulawayo in Saturday's first Test.
'With Lungi (Ngidi) not being here for the first Test, Kwena Maphaka is going to lead the bowling attack,' Conrad confirmed on Thursday.
'As a 19-year-old, when you get given that responsibility, it doesn't only speak volumes for how highly we rate him, but also the calibre and the mentality that he possesses.
'He's a young buck that shows maturity way beyond his years. So, yeah, he'll definitely be leading the attack in the first Test.'
Conrad's laudatory remarks were quickly diluted by caution though, with the veteran mentor willfully trying to limit expectations to allow Maphaka the space to develop at his own pace.
Equally, though, he understands the young Cub's eagerness to shoulder greater responsibility - like had always done throughout his school and youth international career.
'We've obviously got to be very smart in identifying when we do put him out in the shop window. I think this would be a great time for him.
'Zimbabwe, and I am talking Test cricket specifically, where he is not the third quick behind KG (Rabada) and Marco (Jansen) necessarily, but he is the main dog.
'So that responsibility will grow massively, and it's all about being patient. Just like you need to be patient with batters, you need to be patient with bowlers as well.
'We're not going to see the best of Kwena Mphaka in the next couple of months, but these are all the building blocks so that we can see the best of Kwena in, say, three or four years' time.'
Maphaka's development as a top-class paceman is integral to Conrad's overall plan of growing the South African fast bowling depth.

Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Al Nassr until 2027

Cristiano Ronaldo inked a two-year extension with Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr, the club announced Thursday, following months of speculation over which team he would sign for next season. "Cristiano Ronaldo is staying at @AlNassrFC until 2027," the club wrote in a post on X. Minutes before the official confirmation, the team posted a teaser video, with the 40-year-old Ronaldo walking along a beachfront and saying: "Al Nassr forever". Ronaldo later posted a message on his Instagram, confirming the extension. "A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let's make history together," read the post. The Portuguese superstar arrived in 2023 in the kingdom to play with the club, heralding a rush of players in the latter stages of their careers to the oil-rich country. Last month, Ronaldo posted "This chapter is over" hours after the Saudi Pro League wrapped up with Al Nassr finishing third and trophyless once again. "Ronaldo's presence is a key factor in developing the Saudi league in the last two years and a half. He opens the door for elite and young players to come to Saudi Arabia," a source from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), a major investor in Saudi football, told AFP last month. The oil-funded PIF, the sovereign wealth fund behind a number of big-ticket Saudi investments, controls a group of Pro League clubs including Al Nassr, Al Hilal and Al Ahli. Ronaldo's announcement in May came just months after Brazilian star Neymar ended his injury-plagued 18-month stay in January, after playing just seven times for Al Hilal -- on a reported salary of around $104 million a year. Although Ronaldo was the Pro League's top scorer with 25 goals, he has been unable to win a Saudi or continental trophy with Al Nassr, who lost in the Asian Champions League semi-finals last month. AFP | Fayez NURELDINE Last year, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said he could end his career with Al Nassr, the Riyadh team favoured by a number of Saudi royals. Saudi Arabia has shaken up football by spending heavily on stars from Europe, starting with Ronaldo's move in late 2022, and the desert nation will host the World Cup in 2034. For the past two years, Saudi football fans could watch the likes of Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, with six Ballons d'Or between them, on any given weekend during the football season in the kingdom. However, the oil-fuelled Saudi football project has drawn comparisons with the Chinese Super League, which imported players on exorbitant salaries until team owners went bust as the Chinese economy fizzled. But with Saudi Arabia set to host the 2034 World Cup, and desperate to re-model itself as a tourism and business magnet before global oil demand falls for good, there is probably more to come from the Pro League. Ronaldo appeared to trade an end-of-career payday for football obscurity when he first moved to Riyadh's Al Nassr two years ago in a deal said to be worth $250 million at the time.

A new general for Chiefs: ‘Gerrard-like' signing arrives in SA

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly welcomed English-based creative midfielder Ethan Chislett to Naturena. The 26-year-old attacking midfielder was born in Durban but spent most of his life in England. His father, Donovan, had a career in the Premier Soccer League in the 70s and 80s. According to FARPost , Chislett landed at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday and was greeted by Amakhosi staff. This week, it was reported that he had signed a two-year deal with the option to extend with the Soweto giants. Chislett is regarded as a talented player, capable of playing as a number 10, number 8, or as a wide midfielder, similar to former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. The 26-year-old spent the last two years with English club Port Vale where he made 68 appearances and scored 13 goals. His move to Chiefs comes at the right time where the club is seeking a creative player. His father, Donovan, told FARPost that his son was eyeing the potential of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 'Now with the 2026 [FIFA] World Cup coming up and the potential opportunities in South Africa, it seems like almost the perfect time,' he said. 'I'm looking for a fresh opportunity. I think my heart and mind are aligned, and they're set to South Africa, if possible,' Chislett said. Kaizer Chiefs will travel to the Netherlands next month to play several high-profile friendlies. Although the club has not announced any new players, five players have departed. Brevis could add more oomph to Proteas Test side, with bat and ball

His presence in both the Test and T20 squads in Zimbabwe suggests Dewald Brevis will play an increasingly bigger role for the Proteas in the foreseeable future. That should come as no surprise, because Brevis has long been forecast to make a major impression at international level. Yet on the eve of a likely Test debut in the first match that starts in Bulawayo on Saturday, it feels like it's taken Brevis a long time to earn what would be only his third international cap — having played two T20s against Australia in 2023. But Brevis is no longer the flashy AB de Villiers clone of his formative years. 'Brevie's matured nicely from when I last worked with him in 2022,' said Proteas coach Shukri Conrad. Part of Conrad's under-19 World Cup squad that year, Brevis announced himself to the world with record-setting figures at that tournament. He signed an IPL contract soon after but in the next two years his performances in the middle didn't match the hype. New Blood. Same Badge. 🇿🇦🔥 Our uncapped players are putting in the work as they gear up for a shot at Test glory in Zimbabwe. 💪🏏 #WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) June 26, 2025 Last season, however, saw Brevis finally live up to the fanfare. Not only was he a central figure in MI Cape Town's charge to the SA20 title, but he impacted the Titans in both the provincial One-Day and Four-Day competitions. In the latter he was the second-highest run-scorer with an aggregate of 573 runs, including two centuries and two half-centuries. 'He's got experience under his belt with regards to first class cricket,' said Conrad. Brevis has retained that aggressive and stylish streak in the red-ball format too. While Conrad couldn't confirm a starting team for the first Test, Brevis provides the kind of spark with the bat that Conrad enjoys. A bit like Harry Brook does for England, Brevis is able to change the momentum of an innings. Though not as important as in the limited-overs formats, that Brevis scored his runs in last season's Four Day series at a strike rate of 88.69 is indicative of intent. 'The exciting thing, and this is the message Ashwell (Prince, the batting coach) and I keep ramming home, is that we don't want guys to come here and change things because they feel it's international level. Whatever they've got we want to enhance and showcase,' said Conrad. Zimbabwe off to Bulawayo ahead of the two-match Test series at Queens Sports Club against World Test Champions South Africa. 🏏 The first Test is scheduled for 28 June to 2 July, with the second match set to run from 6 to 10 July. #ZIMvSA #ExperienceZimbabwe — Zimbabwe Cricket (@ZimCricketv) June 20, 2025 His leg-spin is an extra string to his bow that Conrad has always encouraged Brevis to improve and on a slow pitch in Bulawayo, even if SA do start with two front-line spinners, it could prove useful. 'I'm really excited to see what we can get out of Brevie with his not-so-filthy leg-spin,' said Conrad. 'With the bowling I always felt there was something, there was more we could unlock. Depending on the balance we go with for this Test he could play a role with the ball. I want to see what he can bring.' With six players who started the World Test Championship final missing the two Tests in Zimbabwe (Lungi Ngidi is available for the second match), the side that starts on Saturday will be short on experience. Kwena Maphaka, who has played just one Test, will lead the attack, likely alongside Corbin Bosch, who has also played just one Test. 'For a 19-year-old to be given that responsibility doesn't only speak volumes for how highly we rate him, but also the calibre and mentality he possesses,' Conrad said of Maphaka. 'This is a great time for him, where he is not the third quick (bowler) behind KG and Marco, but he's the main dog. That responsibility will grow him massively. But just like we have to be patient with batters, you need to be patient with bowlers. 'We won't see the best of Kwena Maphaka in the next couple of months, but these are the building blocks so that we see the best of Kwena in three to four years' time.' Keshav Maharaj will captain the side, with Temba Bavuma absent because of the hamstring strain suffered at Lord's. Conrad is mulling over whether to start just one spinner or two on a pitch he believes will get slower as the match progresses. The second spinner's slot would see Prenalen Subrayen make his debut, with Conrad keen on assessing the off-spinner with one eye on tours later this year to Pakistan and India. Squads Zimbabwe: Craig Ervine (capt), Brian Bennett, Tanaka Chivanga, Trevor Gwandu, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Wessly Madhevere, Clive Madande, Vincent Masekesa, Wellington Masakadza, Prince Masvaure, Kundai Matigimu, Blessing Muzarabani, Newman Nyamhuri, Tafadzwa Tsiga, Nicholas Welch, Sean Williams
